Hori introduces PS4 controller with asymmetrical sticks

hmm reminds me of this for some strange reason

Reminded me of a DIY version of that.

Assembled by someone who doesn't have much pride in their work.

Don't have a problem with the missing features, it was never meant to replace the DualShock 4 for every game, only for shooters. Did you guys complain about the Fighting Commander 3 not having analog sticks and vibration? The former was a controller for fighters, so they left out the unnecessary features, all we wanted was a good d-pad and responsive buttons.

I'm not getting this though, I don't play shooters.

Got excited at thread title, then saw the pics. Very disappointed. After all the initial "OMG DS4 greatest controller ever" hype died down for me I started to have many issues with it. It's still significantly better than the DS3, but still not as good as 360/X1 controller, and lack of asymmetrical sticks is the biggest one.

While this Hori controller address's that, it seems to be lacking in many other area's just by the looks of it. Mainly the lack of touchpad, and a different d-pad. I love the sony d-pad always have. Also as usual with Hori peripherals it's fucking ugly and cheap looking. Hard to judge the feel of the sticks looking at the picture though. My biggest gripe with the DS4 besides the lack of asymmetrical sticks is the convex/contour thumbpad on top of the stick. It leads to a lot of slippage in certain games. The X1 stick design is perfect, it has contoured edges with a full concave with sharp lip that digs into your thumb.

DS4 already proved it wasn't the placement of the sticks but the shitty quality of the Analog sticks on the DS3 that made it less intuitive to use.
Well, there's still something to be said for preference, but now they mostly boiled it down to JUST placement preference without other crap to get in the way.

Though a lack of a touch pad, namely a button to replicate pressing in a touch pad, is a problem. Frankly they should've made "Share" that button and put a separate share button on, or dumped Share entirely. Too many games actually do use the touch pad click like the Select button.

Well if you buy this controller to play Ghosts you can't bring up the scoreboard. And if you buy it for Battlefield you can't pull up Battlelog. It's a problem.

As much as I like asymmetrical sticks and dislike the trackpad and think it's way too gimmicky, the lack of the track pad will make it useless for a lot of games. Also no headset jack? What?

If anybody is considering buying this because of the rubber deteriorating on DS4, please just go to gamestop and buy those geltabz stick covers for 7 dollars. I just did this yesterday, and not only am I no longer worried about ruining my controller, I like the new grips 100 times better. Those things rule.

I really wish it had a touchpad. I hate the symmetrical stick design that Sony uses and love the asymetrical placement, but if it's missing features that makes certain games unplayable then it's nothing something I can ever see myself using. Shame.

Agreed. Still don't understand why Sony doesn't offer a model with asymmetrical sticks. Seems like it would spur controller sales and generate additional profits.

Why doesn't MS offer symmetrical sticks?

lol

Guess it's up to you - but a lack of the touchpad means it'll be useless for the majority of the PS4 catalogue. Killzone for example would be impossible to play through.

Yeah, did not consider that oversight, sucks when I think about it. But the controller doubles as a ps3 controller so it has its alternative uses.

Dunno why everyone is complaining about the design, it doesn't look bad or anything.

Exactly. This debate is over. The DS4 proves stick placement is irrelevant. It's the ergonomics that matter.

They've proved it's irrelevant, that's why.

then you ask if it's truly PS3 compatible. sixaxis? analog face buttons?

How am I supposed to bring up the map in AC4 without the touchpad? How am I supposed to command my OWL in KZSF? Methinks that Hori is targeting the recent 360 converts that play just COD and BF.

That controller reminds me of this for the PS3:

(That's the PowerA controller for PS3. I actually own one, they aren't too bad surprisingly).

I'd love to be a fly on the wall during the design of this thing.

Executive: "PS4 is selling more than Xbox One which means some people are switching from 360 to DS4 and there will be some people who refuse to adapt, let's make an asymmetrical controller for them"
Engineer: "B-but where are we going to put the touchpad if one of the sticks will be higher? That will be extremely awkward"
Executive: "Fuck it LOL just ship it"
Engineer: "ok...."

Not trying to knock people for preferring asymmetrical but this controller just looks bad and no touchpad means most games won't work properly with it, so I don't see the point.

I don't get why some people get so bent over others wanting to use a design not ok'd by Sony. Seems silly to even have an opinion worth stating on something other people do that has literally zero affect on you.

With that said, it looks like a cheaply designed piece of shit. I'll wait for a fully functional, well dedigned alternate controller to try before making up my mind.

Strangely reminded me of the RE2 controller which I had completely forgotten about until this moment:

They don't even look alike. What gives, brain. I suppose they're both hideous.

Edit: Apologies, didn't realise the sheer size of that image until now.
