Hori introduces PS4 controller with asymmetrical sticks

Every younger siblings gaming memory lol.

It's funny how the company with the craziest controller designs is also the one to nail the stick placement.

Too bad they forgot about triggers. It feels weird pulling a second shoulder button where a trigger typically is.

I don't have any problems going between the dual shock 4 or wii u pro controller. The stick placement is fine in both due to the way each controller is contoured. I still prefer the DS4 because it countours better in my hands, but either will work.

Why is asymmetrical sticks the most sought after controller layout configuration? Isn't this more of a personal preference? I have pretty much been a playstation gamer since 1995, and thus I've so attached to symmetrical sticks, never had a single issue with them, just saying!

Are you asking why there isn't a similar high demand for Xbox controllers with symmetrical stick layout?

Who cares about that? I finally get a damn controller worth a damn for FPS. I'm all for it. Let me bind spot to select and it's good for BF4. Mmm... yes.

Both the DS4 and 720's pad are pretty awful after coming from the 360 pad. They both do things wrong.

You're a shitty FPS player if you can't adjust your thumb an inch to play a game.

I've never liked 3rd party controllers. There always seems to be something a little off about them, loose sticks, shitty buttons, spongy triggers, etc. They usually look like shit too, like the one in this thread.

Wow what an ugly controller, normally I associate hori with having good looking stuff.

Agreed. Still don't understand why Sony doesn't offer a model with asymmetrical sticks. Seems like it would spur controller sales and generate additional profits.

Probably because 99% of people don't care enough so it wouldn't be worth it. I've never heard someone irl ever complain or care about it, and personally I can use the, DS, xbox, or WiiU pro placements and I don't even notice the difference placement wise unless I look down at the controller.

Stick tightness on the other hand is much important imo. Affects the feel so much, and I've had plenty of friends say how they dislike how loosey goosey the DS3's sticks were.

don't know why people are complaining about the symmetrical analog sticks on the DS4, i never had a problem adjusting between the PS4/PS4 sticks after playing on my X360 or vice versa. the DS4 IMO is better than the X360 controller in every way imaginable.

Will admit to just skimming seeing if anyone had actually bought one but I didn't see anyone mention that it has 6 L/R top buttons you can remap buttons and another button on the back. Pics on Play-Asia but I can't link from phone... I personally think this is the correct stick placement (360 controller is perfect) but not about to spend $75 to test out the quality when I am used to the DS4 now and actually just ordered a new blue one earlier this week.

Edit: Markman bought one of these and posted in Feb pick-ups. The reviews I saw didn't mention if the back button was a scuff controller style button or a mapping button. Also it seems most Hori pads are rapid fire, that may be the on off switch of reverse. It's marketed as a FPS controller but not sold in the US?

Still waiting on this

Are you joking ?

That thing looks like it'd be extremely awkward to hold. I laughed and said there's no fucking way that's the new controller, when I first saw it before the PS3 launch. What's the point of having 7inch dongs for grips ? Are they for resting your wrists on ? I don't get it.

If anyone likes this controller, there something wrong with you.

Need flash they aren't.

it is important to distinguish growth from symmetry. Symmetry means similarity between two things, like cutting an apple down its center and looking at two sides that are almost the mirror-image of one another. It is harder to tell why paired body parts like arms and legs grow at the same pace and stay “in-sync” with each other.
Look at your arms. If your right arm was shorter than your left, it would be more difficult to do some things. Now imagine having a small left hand and a really big right hand. You wouldn’t be as good at playing video games, now would you?

I thought it was funny that they mentioned video games lol! But anyways my main point to your news flash is where I highlighted. Your arms ARE SYMMETRICAL, may not be a perfect mirror-reflection (true for everything symmetrical body parts) due to other variables like your dominant arm being bigger than the other and etc. but to consider it asymmetrical.... Yeah... No.

Use it every day. Sticks are slightly tall and there is a slight deadzone...but the shape, texture, analog stick placement and amount of rumble make it my controller of choice. Feels plasticy too.. but i still love it. I no longer use the DS4 for my PS3 games. (accept for the Show)

Yeah, it's typically my controller of choice as well.

The best PS3 controller wasn't even a Sony controller.

Indeed, Logitech's controller is by far the best controller for the PS2 and PS3 (they made one specifically for it too, you didn't have to just use the PC one - although the PC version is also my PC controller of choice).
Sony's "D-buttons" have always been horrible.

Yeah I was joking lol.

Clearly Sony was wanting to win worst controller ever award

It's actually very small

Or that's Shaq holding it.

Here's a CVG interview with Teiyu Goto the man who designed it.

Show me a man who doesn't like the Dualshock egonomics and i'll show you a man holding it wrong.

It doesn't seem to be. :)

"Quite frankly, we had set aside the ergonomic aspect in favour of the image it conjured up. We wanted to present an avant-garde model for the show, running a risk of being criticised."

nope. asymmetrical is natural, obviously

Asymmetric analogs is god awful for FPS. Your right thumb is skewed by 45 degrees so you can't make lateral or horizontal aims easily.

Wii U has the best set up for sticks. It's a shame that the buttons are too low on the Wii Pro controller.

I feel like the Pro Controller should've been somewhere between what it is and a screenless version of the Game Pad. If nothing else I want the same stick/face button positions, Game Pad's a bit better fo face button dominant games because you don't stretch your thumb in as far.

Looks like the typical Nyko/"go to your friend's house and give him the crappy 2nd" controller. Hori makes the beautiful Fighting Edge fightstick but then I see this and scratch my head

The PS4 controller is pretty much perfect as it is. And this is coming from someone who never really liked the DS1-DS3.

This has my interest. Hori makes good stuff.

The advantage to the asymmetrical thumb sticks is you get a better hold on the controller since your hands are naturally going to grasp the controller in different locations. Holding it in the same place on both sides isn't as secure, and therefore not as comfortable to play.

I like the DS4 quite a bit, but the Xbox controllers are just better built and better thought out.

How would this work without the touchpad? Even when games aren't using it properly as a touchpad, don't a lot of them use it as an extra button? Seems like a bit of an oversight.

Would definitely be my first choice for PS4-Controllers, but why did they leave out the touchpad, you can't play every game this way :/.

Will wait for a better version with a touch pad. I like the DS4 quite a bit, but imo the 360 controller and its asymmetrical sticks is just more comfortable for me.

Well it doesn't. Have a look at the Killzone Shadow Fall video posted some messages above, the bug this Hori paddle creates is highly annoying. What were they thinking?
