Horizon MMO among several games reportedly canceled at NCSoft (separate project from the Horizon online game that’s in dev at Guerilla Games)

South Korean developer NCSoft, known for MMOs like Throne & Liberty, is said to have canceled several projects in development. According to Korean outlet MTN, the studio halted work on three projects, codenamed Pantera, H, and J.

Pantera seems to be connected to NCSoft’s iconic Lineage franchise, while Project H has been identified as Project Skyline by Korean media – a MMO using Sony’s Horizon IP.
Thanks to resumes of ex-NCSoft employees as well as old job listings, it’s known that the game was being developed in Unreal Engine 5 for PC and mobile. Early work on the title seemed to have begun in 2021 with over a hundred people working on the title in 2023.

Late in 2023, Sony signed a partnership agreement with NCSoft, similar to the one it signed with Stellar Blade developer Shift Up. Given the similar timing, Sony might have expected the MMO to be ready in 2024.
Back then, Sony’s departing president Jim Ryan commented that the partnership with NCSoft “advances our strategy to expand beyond console and broaden PlayStation’s reach to a wider audience.” A MMO for PC and mobile would have fit the bill.

NCSoft is not doing very well financially at the moment with leadership having informed staff that 2025 is a make-or-break year for the company.

It’s worth noting that this is a completely separate project from the Horizon online game that’s in development at Guerilla Games.

But can we please back to the era meaty single player campaigns? You can't convince me that the big focus on GAAS hasn't hinder the output of Sony single player games.

With all of Sony's first party GAAS games being cancelled, and with the time it takes to develop a AAA single-player game, we're probably only going to get Intergalactic, Ghost, and Wolverine for the remainder of the PS5 generation. Spider-Man 3 will launch on PS6 and you won't see the Bend game or Sony Santa Monica's game until then.

Scary how realistic this sound...

Unless they reuse all the assets and shit from the cancelled gaas and we get frankestein games with no soul.

Btw you forgot cringe fedex simulator 2.

This wasn’t the Horizon online game that AFAIK is still in development at Guerilla games (for now). This was a MMO from NCSoft.

NCSoft makes MMOs and isn’t known for ‘meaty single player campaigns’. Their game would not have had an impact on Sony studios either.

Concord really devastated sony plans uh...

Fairgames is next hopefully (and if cthulhu exist, jade raimond OF page is next after that :lollipop_squinting: )

Concord was the pillar of the house foundation at Sony it seems. Whole thing is crumbling. How many more gaas titles to cancel or flop?

Just you watch

This whole GAAS crashing down will have cost ~$2B to Sony

What does NCSoft have to do with it?
It was never part of "single player campaigns" part

Smart move, honestly. Should've done it sooner. Horizon isn't a world that could have sustained an MMO.
Yeah, and MonHun doesn't have heavy online/gaas elements

It's funny (well, not really) how people are focusing on Sony here, without realizing that this is NCSoft cancelling a lot of stuff because they're about to fucking die.
According to NCsoft executives, if the group does not recover by 2025, the studio will no longer have a future. The Korean giant continues its restructuring, sabotaging new game projects to strengthen other development teams.

Sure, people shouldn't focus on the owner of the IP, who decides which projects greenlight and who deems it a great idea to have not one but TWO Horizon multiplayer. A seamless plan.

Would be quite good if not every 2 game that is and was in development at Sony had something to do with Hoirzon. Such a boring series. Part 1 was still interesting, but after that the story was completely over.

On the bright side it looks like there really is a massive reform happening at Sony PS right now. Well ps5 is a long way to go and lets just take this ps5 pro era as a relaunch of ps5 and hopefully more focus on single player exclusives..

They really are milking this franchise dry, aren't they? Robot dinosaurs are cool, but so are shooting space Nazis, and I liked the latter way more. Why can't they make Ghost of Tsushima/GoW Ragnarok type of games, a single player game with a pretty good side mode like MP or a rogue-lite mode?

Sure, probably the people who were forced to make those games instead firing the people who are forcing them
No, there were people over at SIE who lost their jobs. Remember when Connie booth and a bunch of her team was fired?

Not surprising. Playstation was never known as a paragon of multiplayer games, so it's not surprising their live-service initiative went south after Concord's monumental failure.

Playstation, stick to your guns with a few online games here and there. Simple as that.

Imagine the billions burnt in projects that will never see the light of the day? No way this money couldn't have been invested in more important projects.
