Watch it without reading about it.

I would second Spring, but I'm not sure I would call it Body Horror in the sense of what you are probably looking for. Excellent film though. The recently released Bite is pretty decent and does carry the a bit of spirit of the Brundlefly with it. Also might check out Starry Eyes as well. I really liked that movie but it seemed pretty divisive.

Just saw Bay of Blood. Have to admit that I am a little bit disappointed, but it was a good flick. That ending...

Cant wait for when Black Sunday will release in two weeks.

Now You See It has a new video on "What Makes A Movie Scary" and uses Lights Out as its example (mainly using the light flipping reveal in the trailer and short film). Conclusion being that the short film is more effective for a number of a reasons

https://youtu.be/EPRppNlfaX8

Besides the reasons there, the other aspect that made the short film more effective IMO was how the reveal was done. In the movie, the monster is still shrouded in shadow and you can't really make out any details, and the woman doesn't really have a reaction. While I the short film, the monster is visible just enough to invoke that unsettling "what am I looking at" feeling, and the woman has such a raw visceral reaction at the sight

I got a 4K tv over the weekend and there is a serious lack of 4K horror movies. The best I can find is Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974 on 4K Blu-ray and The Conjuring and Annabelle on VUDU 😐

Started a free trial of Shudder. Anyone have any experience with it? Also, recommendations?

I'd never heard of that before but I looked it up and it seems...pretty cool? I wonder how often they update the library.

Report back with how your trial goes, I might be tempted to drop the $50/year

I did 2 free trials. 1 standalone and 1 as an add-on to Amazon Prime. I'm currently a paid subscriber through Amazon Prime because the streaming seems to be better quality and almost all of the movies have subtitles (I have a minor hearing problem so subtitles come in handy)

As for recommendations, it depends on what kind of horror you're into.

Here are some good ones i see taking a quick glance-

Snowtown
I saw the devil
Splinter
Deadgirl
Night of the Demons
Demons/ Demons 2
Hellraiser
Henry
Antichrist
Pieces
Story of Ricky
Day of the Dead
Red, White and Blue
Basket Case
Zombi
Pulse
Angst (highly recommended)
Eaten Alive
Sheitan
Deep Red
Dream Home

I can keep going but those should get you started :)

Watched "The Hallow" and I didn't think it was bad at all. A lot seem to hate it though for some reason. Cool creature designs and effects. It's on NFI.

Yep, i clearly remembered this being said back then.

I had friends who honestly believed this was real. No joke!

I didn't believe it was real, but there was a great mocumentary about how the footage was found in this untouched well and i went "Holy shit, maybe... could it be..."

Being from Ireland, I thought id love it, but hated it for some reason. Started well but got so bored halfway through I just wanted it to end and started to zone out, which rarely happens me with horrors. Creatures were good though, yeah.

Thank you for the list, glow. :) There's a lot there that I haven't seen before, and I've gone through several so far. I'm putting things on hold for Stranger Things, but I'll post impressions soon.

I was too young to remember the Blair Witch hype, but I do recall Cartoon Network's Scooby-Doo parody.

I liked the Blair Witch documentary/pre-game stuff far more than the actual movie. The build up was great and I had friends that believed it was real. The documentary was pretty effective in getting in people's heads. I believe there were even some sort of written materials too but that was too long ago to remember.

Anybody have any info about The Wailing? Missed its (apparently rather limited) theatrical run and can't seem to find info on video/rental release

As Above, So Below is legit awesome. The perfect mix of mystery, suspense, and thrills for me. Bonus points for the element of decoding cryptic clues to find a mythical secret. I love that stuff when it's done well, and this movie has a great journey and payoff. Very satisfying ending too.

Can anyone recommend other movies in this vein? The closest thing I've seen is The Descent, which was great but lacked the intrigue of a treasure hunting subplot.

I find The Tunnel a really good movie.

It has that creapy suspense.

Shudder is pretty nice so far, for what it is. I've mostly just used the mobile app for it, since the mobile site refuses to let me sign in (for some reason). I tried it out first with two old favorites, House and An American Werewolf in London. Both still hold up for me, thankfully, especially since I haven't gotten to see either of them in years.

Then, I decided to have some fun and checked out something of historical significance; Blood Feast. I remember seeing a trailer for it when I was a kid, not knowing what the hell I just saw. I figured now would the perfect time to get some closure on it. While it has its place as one of the first "gory" movie (and the gore scenes are somewhat creepy, even now), the movie itself has not aged well. At all. Still, it has a "so bad it's good" feel going for it. Speaking of which...

Pieces. Of all the movies I could've chosen from the list to watch first, and I picked...that. Seriously, I have zero clue of what I watched back there, but I was completely mystified by its weirdness. Like Blood Feast, it has some quite a bit of gore that can still be unnerving, but it has some truly baffling stuff (and casual racism) on top of that. Also,
that ending. o.0

Now, as much as I love digging into all sorts of horror films, I realized that I never got to watch any Italian horror. This lead me to checking out Deep Red, Demons and Demons 2. Deep Red is actually the first time I ever watched a Dario Argento film, and I have to say, it impressed me a lot. It's very, very 70s (and all the awkwardness that entails), but I did enjoy the plot and the death scenes.
It actually did mess with me early on in the film, and I didn't even realize it until it was revealed near the end
. If you've seen it, you'll know what I mean.

Demons is glorious 80s cheese, and I didn't even expect much. Fun fact; I actually met Geretta Giancarlo at a horror convention last year before I eventually saw it with Shudder, even got a picture with her (she was super nice ^_^). While it wasn't too original, I had a lot of fun with it.
That jump scare ending can go fuck itself, though.

Demons 2, I was rather disappointed with. It's a retread of the first film, almost beat for beat. While I appreciate the somewhat meta way it connects the two films, there wasn't much here that I hadn't already seen.

And that's me with Shudder, so far. I guess you can look forward to my continued rambling and discovering new horror movies. XD

Watch The Borderlands.

Also I just found out Baskin is on Netflix and I just finished watching it. Pretty fucked up!

Just watched Baskin on Netflix. Was pretty disappointed in it.

It starts out slow, which is fine and all, but the payoff isn't really worth it in my opinion. It had some good atmosphere though.

The Baby Man will be something I remember for a long time, lol.

Great atmosphere, useless ending.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is great.

Anyway, it depends on what you're in the mood for. A Girl Walks Home is more moody and laid back, I Saw the Devil is fucking batshit.

I haven't watched BoS since it came out on DVD. Maybe I shall bite the bullet and watched it again. :D

Debating between watching I Saw the Devil or A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.

i like both, nunu

a girl walks home alone at night is slower paced. it's a beautiful movie, though.

i saw the devil is one of my favourites. lol. it's just so fun and absurd :>

cant go wrong with either~

Damn, good calls! Thanks for the recommendations. I really enjoyed both movies. Are these considered found footage films?

I absolutely love this kind of documentary-style movie that starts in some ordinary setting and then shows creepy environments, where the tension builds and you watch the characters make disturbing discoveries or see uncanny things start to happen. (The Blair Witch Project, which is the definition of a found footage film, is like this. And there are elements of it in The Witch too, although that one is more cinematic, and concerned with the drama of a devout family coming up against agents of evil.)

The Borderlands had such a satisfying ending. What a payoff. And all of the exploration stuff in The Tunnel was A+. Those movies hit the spot.
