How do you get the masks? I haven't finished the game yet, but I'm missing one of the older masks. Do you need to get a high enough score?
You earn masks by either getting the required high score for each map or pick them up from some of the levels. Full list of masks and their acquisition- methods can be viewed here.

I just tried playing with the 360 controller.

This game is clearly not made for the 360 controller.

The reason why the game works well with a controller is that bullets travel in a straight line, there's no actual reason to have the reticle move farther than a few feet from your dude unless you want to free look/autoaim, which I admit is a little clunky with the controller. I'd be interested in what your scores look like though.

Played it entirely with a controller and enjoyed it once I came to terms with the fact it's not a shooter.

Same here. Played it with a controller, no problems whatsoever.
However, I only found out near the end that there was a 'targeting' button :O :p

Shit, lol.

I'm bad with M&K.. but I'm deplorable with 360 controller. Maybe I should just give it time if you guys seem to think its fine.

Loved the first time through.

But now I want to collect the masks and I'm having a hard time sticking with it. Hopefully my drive to complete the game wasn't just pride.

Thanks, will check this when I'm home. And after I finish the game, I don't want to spoil anything xD

It's basically Bath Salts: The Game. On acid. But in a good way, you know. And it gets messier and messier as you progress. Brilliant.
I think there's something wrong with me. I mean, I notice the weird looking backgrounds and that psychedelic stuff, but it doesn't bother me in the slightest. In fact, I wish it was more noticeable, and the screen shook more violently.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!

I don't think it's meant to be annoyingly over the top in that way. Not like some of those crazy shmups and rhythm games. Thankfully, because I can't stand those. If they wanted it more disturbing it wouldn't have been hard to add more blur, trails etc.

Oh, OK. It's just that I've read several comments saying they can't stand more than 15 minutes, or a couple of levels, before their heads start aching and they get dizzy o nauseated.

I doubt that there's anything wrong with you. To me it feels like a vocal minority being miffed about forgetting to watch a video of gameplay before purchase.

I however appreciate the aesthetic, so I am biased in the matter.

Yep, there's only really been a few complaints about these things and i've never felt a headache or stomach gurgle from the game either. It sucks for those who are affected by it though, since it makes the game harder to appreciate for them.

So far I'm liking the game up to the end of Chapter 3. I think there definitely needs some Vsync options as mine runs as an high but unsynced framerate and there is considerable screen tearing. I also like the art design, but I wouldn't mind being able to increase the resolution or run it in windowed mode as the text can be a little blocky and pixelated at times. Rebindable keys would be nice, also. Other than these things, it is an intense game and well made.

Really the only issue I have with the way the controller is setup is that they did not map ESC to the B Button. If you are trying to replay levels and are checking grades you have to grab your keyboard. Having high resolution text would look ridiculous to me.

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Beat the main game,
the epilogue with the biker
, unlocked all the weapons, and now am going back to collect the puzzle pieces/masks I missed. Up to about level 7 or 8, I definitely don't look forward to playing
the police station or the hospital stealth levels
again.

This is pissing me off.

The game constantly crashes on my computer so I installed it on my older computer with a integrated card and windows XP. The game runs fine and doesn't crash, but I get a weird scrolling flickering bar that obscures the screen. I can otherwise play the game correctly, without any crashes.

Nothing like a good run ruined. This game needs to have some cheats.

I was wondering if there was a problem with my video card drivers. Glad to see it's not me though.

I still haven't been able to play this. It either crashes when it launches, or it crashes on the menu screen. If you have Windows 8, give this a miss, or wait and see if they patch it. It was money down the drain for me.

Question:
Playing as motorcycle helmet guy: Can you pick up items? I played through all his chapters with his knife because I thought you couldn't, but now that i'm heading back through them to pick up secrets (specifically the octopus mask) I can't seem to grab the mask off the counter either. Am I just missing out on how to pick up things as this guy?

You can't pick up weapons as Biker. Once you speak to the guy in the office, you'll put your weapon away. That's when you can pick up the mask in the kitchen. Just had this same problem twenty minutes ago.

The music is awesome but the game itself is really overrated, in my opinion.

I understand the COD hate because it's the same shit over and over again. Fine. Yet all I see with this game is the same level over and over again with a slightly different layout each time. I just don't understand the praise.

Well, every game is like that, same core mechanics under different contexts, and even then, this game manages to vary it up (not always with the best results) with more gun-heavy levels, stealth sections, bosses, etc. What game isn't like this?

I think that what makes this game amazing is that it has a ton of identity pouring out of every aspect: the gameplay is solid and satisfying, and the visuals and the audio compliment the fever dream feeling of the story. And it's really, really good on all of those areas.

Just finished this game. Amazing experience.

Can someone point me to an explanation of the story? I sort of get it but then I sort of don't?

I have to say, watching the previews for this game, I was strangely intrigued, yet kind of nauseated. I felt like it overtly and simply glorified violence, something I'm very strongly against. Yet something about the intoxicating mixture of the lo-fi VHS style 80s presentation and awesomely synthy dark music made me end up buying it when it was on sale. I have to say, the game is masterfully simple, which makes its game mechanics quite addictive.

The level of violence is extreme, but it seems to be an aesthetic choice with deeper implications. It's not necessarily a glorification of violence, but some kind of portal into the ID's desires. There's something fascinatingly potent about the combination of malleable identity through animal masks (which brings up also an interesting tie to shamanism/animalism) and the fixation on brutality. I can say this game is not glorifying violence, but using violence to make a surprisingly powerful connection to some baser human quality. You could say, our "animalistic" desires, our inherent canine bloodlust. It's no mere shoot 'em up. I still don't know quite what to make of it.

Scoring, different ways to play, "slightly different layout" changing everything, especially when you go for a no gun run, blah blah blah.

Of course you can just rush through the game once while shooting everything but that's missing the point. Just like making it to the end of Sonic 2 was.

This game is awesome, but playing it for too long gives me a headache. Pretty sure that's intentional. The action is so satisfying and quick, unlike so many games today, particularly ones which involve melee combat. One of the things that always turns me off brawlers, having to beat guys up forever to kill them is annoying.

Anyway, I'm having some trouble with the
police station
, too many damn windows. Guess I need to use guns more, I usually stick to melee.

Yeah I had sort of a similar feeling when reading about it. I was morbidly fascinated with it, but there was something about the game that made me feel kinda sick. Something about how they did blood in the trailers or the grotesque character portraits, I dunno. I was semi-worried about allowing myself to play it, but I finally caved in and impulse-bought it and I'm amazed just thinking about how good it is.

I do think it glorifies violence, but it does it being very self-aware and basically condemning you for going along. It's like the devs knew their game was sick as hell, but it speaks a lot about people and gaming in general the fact that we find it pleasurable.

You can boil pretty much any game down to the repetition of its core mechanics. People generally praise games that give them memorable, unique experiences. "Experience" usually equates to the total package and how all of the game's elements blend together. Hotline Miami's trippy, pulse-pounding sountrack, moody late-80's setting, readable but intentionally dirty graphical style, and most importantly fast-paced arcade-style gameplay all gel together to create a uniquely satisfying game unlike most other releases this year.

It's just a ton of fun, cool as hell, and has a great style about it. Best of all, it can be had for a mere fraction of the price of a new COD game.
