Inspired by something John TV said in another thread a while back...

I'm more interested in connections at home...

1. What country are you in?
2. How do you connect to the net? (ADSL? Cable? Dial-up?)
3. What speed connection do you have?
4. How much do you pay for the service?
5. Are there any caps on how much you can download?

I'm just wondering how prices and speeds vary from country to country :) My specs:

1. UK
2. ADSL
3. 512/256 about to go up to 1Mb (I assume the upload goes up to 512 as well)
4. £30 a month ($55 according to http://www.xe.com Technically, I don't pay, my folks do :D)
5. Not at the moment, come next year the 1 meg service has 30GB download limit per month, half meg has 15 GB limit.

The price hasn't changed in 4 years, but it was initially 512/128 with 3 Gig cap per month. Now it's unlimited.

1. Northern Ireland (UK :p )
2. ADSL
3. 512/256 (Definately thinking about 1mb now its only £30 but i think i mite be out of range)
4. £25.28 (BT decided to give us a 10% discount on what we were paying then they went and lowered the price further so thats what we pay)
5. 15gb cap has just been introduced (30gb for 1mbit) but its not being inforced until 2005

And SFA the upload stays at 256

(I'm on BT Openworld Business account, immune to next years caps - wheeee! :D)

I'm probably going to migrate to Nildram though, an uncapped 1MB service for the same as I am paying now, but I want to see how they cope and whether they are likely to cap first. (If if so by how much.)

Okay, sorry, couldn't resist. I'm in the US and am, at the moment, am leeching off my work's internet access, a fat ol' T1. I figure I can do without the internet the rest of the day.

3. er, I dunno. I think 512/256 is the common one, right? I have the 'normal' package.
4. about $39/month CDN I think which works out to $29 US... it's a bundle with tier3 cable TV so I don't know exactly but it's around $74 a month in total
5. no caps, but I did get an email about file sharing from my ISP one when I uploaded a few gigs more than normal in a month. They do throttle some ports now though, but just the old default napster ones.

I hate this shit. For the same price I can get cable internet with 3 mb download speed. I would've switched already if it weren't for this fucking contract you're in for a year. Less than a month to go, but then I gotta start paying for newsgroups.

yup, we are getting screwd, cable prices have been going down quite nicely but adsl has remained exceedingly high. 1mbit was £40 up until a few days ago. Now its £30

No special deal at all. This is more or less what they offer now in most places. I used to have 512/512 until a couple of weeks ago for the same price!

Haha, Neptunes, 15GB a day, no wonder! ;)

1. Canada
2. Cable
3. 5megabit down / 1 megabit up
4. something like 50 cdn/month (aka 30-35 USD)
5. Not really. The official limit is 50GB/month but even if I hit 100GB there is still only a 1/3 chance of getting in trouble over it. At 50-75GB, no worries.

The cap still sucks, though I've never exceeded it. The speeds could also do with improving (though I hear there'll be 1Mbit/sec cable connections available soon for under 50 euro, with no cap, so I'll definitely be getting that). The situation here but a year ago was terrible, but it's getting better all the time now, mostly because the government has been shamed into pusing the market forward.

None that I'm aware of....

I'm hoping for the day that we can move up to 1mbit downstream and maybe a faster upstream for hosting my Neverwinter server. But at this current price I'm afraid they'll be charging through the ass for it.
