How are you deciding when to get each next gen console?

I am tearing my hair out, but I finally decided to get the consoles when a great rpg(or in Rev's case an SSB game) is released for them.

When theres that game I must play as soon as possible. For the PS3 its MGS4, for the Xbox 360 its Halo 3. Simple as that.

Well, since I won my Xbox 360 with Pepsi I'll be getting that at launch. Since I'm saving so much money there, I'll be picking up the PS3 on or very near to the release date as well. I always was going to get the Revolution at launch no matter what, and that won't change.

In short, I'll be getting all 3 at launch, but I was going to be waiting on the 360 for at least 6 months to a full year.

When they are available to buy...

I mean:

when my system of choice (before I even buy any of them, mind you :lol ) gets a super awesome game that no other system has. Of course I will buy other system too (when it is on sale LOL AM I RIGHT?), doing that would give me a free pass to troll the other system. I can even make my avatar about a franchise on the 'other system' just to make me seem even more unbiased. [/gaf]

price usually dictates what I get and when.

If PS3 is really expensive, there's no chance I'll be getting it for awhile.

I, uh, hope you didn't hurt yourself trying to figure out when to make the leap to next-gen :P

For me, my considerations are simple:

1. Price
2. Game
3. Support

Previous to this upcoming gen, I've purchased every system at launch. This upcoming one, with the added price on the new systems and the extra price hike on individual games along with my current financial situation, I've had to take a far more cautious approach.

At the end, I'll get all three. But the criteria is met as follows...

1. Price - systems will be purchased at or below 299.99. Retard packs need not apply.
2. Game - PS3 is MGS4, XBX360 is Halo 3, Revolution is Zelda. I want to have the next-gen systems in my hand before those games are out, price allowing.
3. Support - Third parties are life. That means both solid Japanese and Western support. I don't want one or the other, I want both. Judging on how the chips fall, I will adopt based on current market leader conditions.

@ launch...good thing about this next cycle is that no 2 consoles are launching within the same month (Xbox/GC) so I can actually have more time and money to plan mu purchse

Three games I really want to play, or a price drop and at least a few games I want to play

The 360 has yet to hit the first criterion :P

Normally I always buy at launch. This gen it seems like I'll wait for price drops and in the case of the PS3 price drops AND track record for reliability. Only one that is a for sure at launch right now is Revolution and that's just because I can't wait to try that out.

I'll wait and see what Sony and Nintendo have to offer before I'll get a 360. I don't have the time to support all three consoles and I don't want to spend the money needed for that. At least one of 'm won't be getting enough playtime and ultimately feel like a waste of money.

Besides, I don't feel the need for a next-gen console just yet.

I don't have the money. I just don't have the fucking money for a 360 right now, which sucks because PDZero might actually still rock the block.

But usually I wait until they're $200 or below. The only one I bought more expensive than that was the PS2, and I still regret it (it dropped by $100 3 months later).

I'm getting the X360 at launch because I don't want to miss the popularity window on the Live games.

I'll get the PS3 when the price is lower - ~$200.

Revolution when Metroid Prime 3 is released.........if its as good as MP.

Having a formula has never worked for me. When the price is right and the games are tempting enough, I'll do it...but I don't wait for a *certain* price or a *certain* game. It's more art than science. :D

Since I play most games online Xbox 360 is numero uno for me. I have a gut feeling it'll be my most used next gen system.

I'm really thinking about cutting back my purchases next gen. Stick with one main system and then get the two secondary systems when they are cheaper.

As far as PS3 and Revolution goes, I'll pick them up at various price points. PS3 when it gets under 299 and Revolution when it is under 149.

- only after I finish my back log. I want to start next-gen fresh.

- not at launch unless there's a killer app I want (like Mario).

- PS3 not after MGS4, probably fall 2006 unless there aren't many games I'm interested in.

- Rev also fall 2006 and maybe early 2007 if there aren't many games on it that I want.

I try to get them at launch if I have the funds, which is honestly quite rare. However if there is a launch title or two that I absolutely must have on day one (Mario 64) I will go to... extreme lengths to get it. :D

I'm going to play the systems I have until I can't play them no more. If I could survive until 1997 with a Sega CD, I can survive a few more years with a PS2, Gamecube and PSP.

Its always been about money for me... Games aren't THAT important. At least, console games anyways. For instance, I'll get a PS3 when MGS4 comes out. Or a 360 when... Er. Or a Revolution when I can use the remote control to turn on my TV and my Revolution.

Revolution at launch.
PS3 depends on the price and games, maybe after the first price drop.
360 depends on the temperature of hell.

The Tree Sitty has a couple of games that I want to play on it. Plus it's the first out, so there you go right there.

I dunno bout the PS3. I'm sure I'll get one, but Sony doesn't exactly have the best record with early iterations of their hardware. Unless there's something that knocks my socks off or I'm filthy rich when it launches, I'll likely wait until the first pricedrop.

I don't rate the Revolution at all.

Revolution at Launch

Xbox 360 when Too Human comes out or when it gets hacked

PS3.. when Sony tells us price details and launch dates, I'll start thinking about it. As for now, it isn't even on my radar. Yes, MGS 4 looks awesome.. but I wouldn't buy a Ps3 for it.

I generally only own one console at a time for each generation. ie: I bought an N64 at launch, sold it after completing Zelda and bought a PS1 with FF7 (and for this generation bought a DC at launch, sold it after it died and bought an Xbox).

Anyway, this generation price is my main concern. I'm going to wait until all three are out (by that time competition should have led to a few price cuts), then buy whichever one has the most interesting games that appeal to me. I will then get another console later on down the line. Right now I'm probably leaning toward getting a Revolution first because it will probably be a. the cheapest, b. hopefully the most innovative due to the controller (if it ends up being just a gimmick no sale) and c. so I can play the gamecube games I missed out on. And then I'll get either a 360 or PS3 (no idea which yet, but my choice will be made a lot easier if PS3 gets a port of Elder Scrolls 4).

I'll probably take a wait and see approach to all three next gen systems before buying. In all likelihood, the three systems will be mine within the next 2 years.

I'm a lil worried about the Revolution, but my curiosity is piqued (Plus, Ninty's still my favorite gaming company).

360 seems so...I dunno. If PD is, in fact, the "next Halo", it'll make avoiding a purchase a bit difficult.

As for PS3, I'm set on owning it but I honestly don't know what's coming out for it other than the boilerplate franchises that I generally don't get into (GT, MGS, GTA, etc.). Square-Enix ensures of this.

Money is the biggest deciding factor of when for me right now, followed by launch games. Last gen I bought all the systems at Japanese launch (American for Xbox), so I blew quite a large amount of money. This time around, I'm living in Japan, so I won't have to pay the huge mark-up prices for importing the systems, unless I want to import a 360 from the States, and I'm still not sure if I want to do that or not.

I'm glad that the 360 is the only system coming out this year; that means buying it and some games in December isn't going to kill me if I want to buy a PS3 next year. But it all depends on the launch line-up.

The only 360 game I really would like to have at launch is DOA4. Not sure about PDZ, and even Ridge Racer is not really impressing me, although I know I'd buy it without hesitation. So I'm trying to decide if it's worth dropping $450-$500 at launch for the system, DOA4, and Ridge Racer.

If I was back home, I'd just pack up my Saturn collection and sell it off, maybe the Dreamcast too, to get the money. Can't do that now; have to buy everything straight out.

Last gen was no better for this killer launch apps either (again- JAPAN, people), and it seems the same way right now. 360 doesn't have its Halo, and there's no way MGS4 is going to be a PS3 launch title. Not even going to bother with Nintendo since they have yet to show any games yet...there's plenty of time to decide on that months down the road from now.

The PS3 and Revolution (as long as Mario is there) are definte launch systems. I'm not sure about the 360. I never really thought the Xbox was worth the purchase and I haven't really seen anything on the system at this point that I really have to have.

Man, you've got an iron will. I have grown to hate my Xbox and I STILL can't bring myself to sell it for that handful of games I still want/play.

I don't know. The gap in between both consoles might be a determining factor.
I mean, if 360 comes out in November but the PS3 doesn't come to North America until very late 2006/early 2007, it might be hard holding out for a PS3 for that long.

Then again, if in say, June or July '06, if 360 still has nothing interesting out or on the way... it might be worth waiting.

It's too early to tell, but if there's anything that's making me pull my hair out, it's that we all might have to wait until like March 2007 to get a PS3. And that's if you preorder at the right time.

As soon as I'm bored with the games I own right now and will buy in the future, I'll pick up a new system to dick around with. That and I refuse to pay more then 500 canadian for a system so if the PS3 launches for more then that AND manages to be a boredom remover I still wouldn't buy it.

Realistically it's looking like this - Xbox 360 to be purchased as early has december but as late as next fall. PS3- Will be purchased late 2007 at the earliest and only if there are atleast 3 10/10 games available on it at that time. Nrevolution- waiting and seeing, might not bother with it.

Ill probably buy all 3 again but 360 has great launch games and im ready for a next gen console. I really look foward to the revolution so ill get at the launch. And the PS3... havent seen games that really apeal to me, i will get it, for final fantasy, but probably not at the launch.

Its tough for me. I know I'll wan't an Xbox 360 eventually for games like Gears and Too Human. But as for the PS3, I don't know enough about its games to be certain, but I'm sure I'll be interested. And then there's Revolution, which I could go either way on, depending on how the controller is utilized, since thats going to be the main pull of that system for me.

I'll get the 360 and Revolution at launch (360 because of Ridge, Rev because of Nintendo).
I'm not sure when I'll get a PS3 yet - it basically depends on price and software lineup. A killer launch lineup (like the PSP) will have me putting the money down immediately, but a lackluster lineup will leave me hanging on the price, and if it's expensive, I'll just wait until a killer game comes out.

You should all use the One True Way to determine when to buy a console, the iapetus Console Purchase Determination Algorithm (iCPDA).

Simply buy a console when the total cost of the games that you want for it is equal to or greater than the cost of the console hardware.

That's it.

I, of course, will be buying them all at launch, but that's because I'm stupid.

When a game I practically could not live without shows up on the console. Either that or I break after playing someone else's console extensively. Then again, money isn't as much of a factor as it was when I was younger, so I might just snap them all up at launch.
