1. LOBBY SYSTEM
2. friend codes are broke ass. at least have it notify you when someone adds you
3. mario kart online is 100cc class. Thats shit.
4. Droppers (not really a nintendo problem, but....). Have that resetti dude show up next time you start x game and say 'oh no, you get 3 losses for being a pussy!' make a big song and dance of disconnecting and emphasize the penalty.
5. let us add people we meet online. jeesus we can't speak to them.

I think they should add a counter for disconnects. WLAN leads to disconnects sometimes so I think it's fair not to count every disconnect as a loss. But if it occurs too often, the player gets his punishment.

In case anyone hasnt notice in matches between two or three players, the game still acts as if theres 4 players, thats what it was meant for. It'd be nice if Nintendo accepted the fact that you dont always get 4 players in a match, especially with pussys disconnecting in the middle of a match.

I would nearly say that they thought about it quite well, in that way to save kids from abusive chat and being chased after, Nintendo then getting sued for providing such a possibility. But then... you can use decals... but then again, they only show up full sized at the beginning of a match. mah...

I REALLY hope, they did not have enough time to implement all this stuff, future titles will tell. Let's hope, they listen to us customers and do not hesitate to use functions that have been proved useful on other platforms.

I am worried about the revolutions online capabilities. Hopefully Nintendo doesnt follow all of the DS online structures.

FFS, there is a mic BUILT IN THE console. Why no VoIP? Or at least some kind of text chat between the games in Mario Kart. It's just retarded the way it is now.

Friend codes is the worst system ever :(

Apparently, Nintendo is worried that NAMBLA is watching the evolution of Nintendo online very closely.

-Add some fucking form of chat before I beat you
-Let me fucking see who's online
-Let me join a race in progress with my friends and just watch, then join in on the next race

Jesus Christ Nintendo, could you have made this suck any harder

Why? I mean I think it is a really good system. That both "Friends" have to add each other gives you perfect control over who you want to play with and who not (unless another friend of yours added him...). Only adding Friends online via selecting them should be added whenever Nintendo opens their restrictions. A central Control-Center would be cool, where you can see which friend is playing what and leave messages and so on (yeah I know, that is done on other systems before)

Thats because lill Timmy may end up talking to Big Poppi. About things lill Timmy shouldn't know about or should find out through someone his own age

:lol

I think this what they're trying to avoid.

Anyway, before Nintendo adds this shit and makes the system more "full-featured", they need to fix the actual match-up system first. Maybe a lobby would correct this, I'm not sure. All I can say is that when N-Sider ran a Mario Kart tournament, we suffered through many pains when just trying to get people connected using the friends list.

Sometimes, all 4 would connected no problem. Other times, only 2 would connect (so 2 and 2) ... and it didn't even have to be dedicated to that single pair combination. Occasionally, you would get 3 connecting with 1 not. It's just a big crapshoot and I'm beginning to think that the trouble of finding people to play online might have something to do with this.

Well, for starters they might have required, for safety, that your friend's (hey, you know him/her... wait better him... or else you might have sexual thoughts about her unless you are a homosexual male and then it is better that is a girl... naturally this would all be handled in the taxi conversation which would politely obtain all the informations about you) friend-code is fingerprint based (touch-screen galore or $10 add-on maybe bundled with the USB WiFi adaptor) so that each of the friends you play with has to actually physically know you and be near you when you set-up the game... of course this would have to be done for every game.

I would want to say more, but I am afraid the SCE engineer normally assigned to Clipping and Mip-Map+LOD calculations implementations might be assigned to PLAYSTATION LIVE and finds this post a fountain of inspirational ideas.

Explain how LIVE's gamer-tag based friend system does not provide you exactly this functionality (while also giving you much more than that... which it does :)) ;).

Give it a couple of years and I expect all games rated teen or under will use a similar system no matter what console.

It's only a matter of time before the media and various parents groups will start screaming about "10 year old boys voice chatting with 40 year old men who they don't know" and then see the lawsuits start flying.

Nintendo are just taking the steps now before it becomes an issue...and it will.

some people seem to like the nintendo method more, since you get 32 friends per game instead of 100 friends total...

so each game you have friends that you know will play that game...

I am glad you can juggle that many friends, but I do not really envy it :).

I do not envy having to input 100 gamer-codes for every game either ;).

well i agree that is has problems, but atleast it's $0.

only thing i am missing is a chat. the other stuff has worked good for me.

I don't mind friend codes so long as it's not the only option... in other words, Mario Kart's okay (I can always find a game online) but Animal Crossing's not (I've yet to actually take it online). Even if Nintendo's afraid of their machine becoming a pedo-magnet, they really should've added something different with Animal Crossing that's not reliant on friend codes... maybe have persistant national cities that you could go visit or something. As is, the game's practically useless online. :/

Yes, you hit the spot.

It is free, but I do not think that Nintendo meant it like "it will be free... and you will notice why quickly" though.

Yes they could have added that too... places where common friends can meet for example, in addition to the current method.

I think they should use Jabber for the buddy list ...

but Nintendo's not exactly a computer company, so I wouldn't expect so much.

Yep, it seems like a no-brainer. Buy unique expensive luxury items, "go out" to dance clubs and meet people, walk around town and see famous sights/monuments, etc, etc. Cities would've been the perfect addition to ACWW.

I don't mind the friends code system so far. But, that's because I barely play anything online, and the people I do play with I know very well online.

Of course, I also come from a pretty tight knit online community.

Well, I don't think it's intended to. The whole idea behind it is to protect the children and this system makes it a lot harder to add people to your list. Hence, kids will be considerably less likely to add someone they don't know (and have that person add them). I'm certain Nintendo could implement a better system for us, but we're not who they're worried about.

I can't believe people are defending Nintendo for NOT giving them voice chat... this is a problem with N-fans in general. They're always making excuses for what Nintendo doesn't give them.

Who cares about pedophiles? Does MS get sued because of XBL? Does AOL get sued because of IM? NO. They can't be held responsible for people's actions.

The mic is there... NOT being able to use it is the crime.

Like Pana said... the service is free, unfortunately is way too obvious as to why.

my hope is that Nintendo stops being so damn worried about some fucking kids playing online. 99.9% ain't gonna get molested or some shit. It's just a bad system. I'm not a kid, so it helps ruin the online experience because of this. Fuck them, Nintendo. Fuck them and forget about them. Make a system that is secure, but doesn't totally gimp the system.

nintendo games are geared towards kids though, with the exception of the hardcore gamers that play stuff like Animal Crossing, and, apparently, pedos.

Friend codes suck, plain and simple. I want a friggen username that I can use on every game. I want it centrally located. I want my friends from past games I've had to easily be put into new games, because they're stored somewhere else, NOT ON MY GAME. I don't want new friend codes for each game! I want to be able to play MY game in a different DS without screwing up MY friend code! The entire friend code thing is assinine.

I'd also like to know when a friend is playing the game, not just when they log into WFC! If I'm playing the computer I want to know that someone else just turned their game on, so I can log into WFC THEN. I don't want to sit in WFC and wait for people to hopefully show up, or quit a worldwide game and get marked with 3 losses just so I can race a friend before they log out. I'm sure I missed the opportunity to play with friends a bunch of times becuase of this.

If you're not going to give me voice chat, or a lobby to chat in, at least let me say "good game" or "wanna play again?" after a match. And let me friend players who I enjoyed playing with, and tell them I friended them (and allow them to friend back)!

Iunno. I'm thinking they're probably waiting to release a dedicated mic for voice chat. That's what that mystery...port... is next to the headphone port is for, right?

They're probably trying to work out a few things before releasing voice chat.

I'd also like to know when a friend is playing the game, not just when they log into WFC! If I'm playing the computer I want to know that someone else just turned their game on, so I can log into WFC THEN.

Unlike an Xbox360, which is always connected to electricity, it would be a serious drain on the battery to have the wi-fi connected all the time. Unless you wanna hook it up to the charger all the time.

I don't think the DS is capable of running much of anything else as far as chat lobbies and stuff are concerned..I don't think thee is enough memory there...I could be wrong. I expect it to get better and the revolutions setup will all be built in, much like live is. If WFC was built into the ds, things may have been different.

lack of voice doesn't really bug me in a handheld online game. the only one where it seemed essential (socom) it's there. something like mario kart...I just want lobbies and a better tag system. obviously the animal crossing thing wasn't so well thought out, but basically they've given the bare bones service that seemed likely back when everyone was bullshitting how great it would be. I bet it's mediocre on Rev as well.

But the GAF spinning about Nintendo's foresight is pretty funny (if expected).

At the very least, if you connect to the WFC it should present you with a list of any users who have added your Friend Code, and you then select those you wish to likewise be on your friends list.

As it stands, the system is borked.

All of these complaints are related to Mario Kart DS and have nothing to do with Nintendo WiFi as a whole. Keep in mind that they just started and it will get better with time.

For fucks sake, we're not defending Nintendo for not including voice chat, we're discussing why it's not there. Do I want voice chat? Yes! Do I think Nintendo's implementation of online has been shit thus far? Yes! Do I think it'll improve? Hopefully.

Stop making extremist generalizations merely because people are discussing a problem.

They HAD the option to include chat / lobby of some form most definately. The Gamespy middleware they're using for the entire network supports it. Hideki Konno's Mario Kart team just didn't think it needed it....

Like someone else said:
ITS A PROBLEM WITH THE GAME. Not the online system.

Given the pedophile related moral panic surrounding chat rooms and kids, I'm not sure Nintendo will relent to any huge extent on their cute n cuddly games, sad as that might be. I hope they do. Metroid might have it... Metroid definately needs to have a lobby of some form so I can say: "gg", and draw a penis.

Stop making excuses for Nintendo and I'll stop making generalizations... did Iwata say they were afraid of getting sued? Did he say Nintendo wanted to avoid voice chat so they didn't offend any virgin ears? Was he worried about pedophiles? Isn't the median age for DS consumers over 20?

There really shouldn't be any excuses for their less-than-stellar online network. The same fans said it would kick ass because Nintendo was doing online gaming 20 years ago. They have the experience to do it right.

Now that it's out, the same fans are asking for more time. "Give it time, things will improve". "They just started, what do you expect."

I'm not a Nintendo basher. I enjoy their presence in the market. I've owned every Nintendo console and handheld available sans VB and DS. I just get irritated by the loyalists who defend them at every wrong turn.

Really, there is no excuse for NOT having a good on-line network. I'm not asking for XBL here, just a way to make things easier for the gamer.

jedimike,

How are you sure that Microsoft hasn't settled out of court?

What the Nintendo DS system needs is a way patch games and update online software, such as an IM program. The best solution would be download updates onto an SD card that can be loaded into the GBA slot. This will allow games such as Mario Kart DS to be patch with better Wifi options. Nintendo, DO IT. Release a Wifi Compatible Play-Yan, that can patch games by WFC.

Because every forum, online game, and messenger program would be liable. There would be law suits everywhere. GAF could be sued because it's a gaming forum... gaming is for kids right. Next thing you know Drinky sends you a PM asking for hot sex. You sue GAF for sexual harassment.

Where did I make any excuses? I hate this shit as much as you do, but I have this little thing in my head called rational thought.

did Iwata say they were afraid of getting sued?
Actually, I've never even thought about that. It's an interesting point, because they have been sued for stupid shit before.

Did he say Nintendo wanted to avoid voice chat so they didn't offend any virgin ears? Was he worried about pedophiles?
Not sure. But NOA did ban the sharing of friend codes on their forums.

Isn't the median age for DS consumers over 20?
Couldn't tell ya.

Yeah, they were dumb for thinking that.

Now that it's out, the same fans are asking for more time. "Give it time, things will improve". "They just started, what do you expect."
I believe this to be reasonable.

Obviously. Anyway, I gotta run for lunch. I'm sure by the time I come back, things will have progressed further beyond this (I'm hoping, anyway).

A lot of disconnections are also due to the fact that Mario Kart is an handheld game. You only play it in short segments. Sometimes you start playing and then you then you have to go right away to do something
