How Come Mini PCs Are Smaller and More Powerful Than Modern Consoles?

How did we end up with such a huge consoles when there are mini PCs out there with an RTX 4070 laptop and an i7 CPUs that are way smaller and much more powerful?

Curse yourself with that bullshit if you like your games to freeze up.

I'm just saying, I've been an IT man for 25 years. I'm sure it will work just fine for everyone and never freeze at all.

Find out.

Post back here once you've ran it few years. Tell us what you discover.

Consoles were also designed to be large with lots of cooling and big fans to run quieter and keep temps low to improve reliability. They also need space for a disc drive.

True, the cooling leaves much to be desired...if you have one of these, put it in front of a box fan

Consoles are designed to be cost-effective to mass-produce first and foremost and hardware-wise this gen is surprisingly fine, silent and not prone to overheating problems.

Plus find me truly silent small PC with the price, size and the power of PS5 Pro, and don't cheap out on bt/wifi plus consider the lack of the power brick on a Pro.

I have been thinking about an all AMD minisforum mini PC for like $800 on Amazon, then installing SteamOS or Bazzite onto it as my next console/emulation machine.

So all those mini PCs freezes??
Do mini PCs exist that don't have any issues? Sure, I suppose they must.

I've ran NUCs for YEARS and eventually swapped back to refurbs.

Should you jump in expecting the same reliability that you get out of a Nintendo or Playstation on every box they sell of this specific mini PC that has according to the OP more powerful hardware than PS5 and a 4070 + i7 inside over long game sessions over years?

I was going to buy a mini-PC as basically a home theater PC, but didn't want it to burn out in a while, so I grabbed an old Dell i5 office PC laying around instead. Don't worry, PC is still the master race and all that jazz, your Lord was not forsaken

Cooling is a huge pain for pre-built mini-PCs if you want something with a proper GPU. There's also a whole Iceberg of issues, like audio shielding, wifi/bt signal strength etc. At the end of the road, when you reach console level of robustness, the budget and the amount of work done with the system wouldn't make a lot of sense.

I mean, it's my experience with my wife's SFF case (a good one from Lian Li) and it's still a bit bigger than PS5 Slim despite the finished costs of $2000.

The rtx 5070ti laptop i purchased is was like 3x the cost of the ps5 pro. It's smaller, it's louder, it's hotter. The power supply is also encased in the console increasing it size while laptop and mini pc's ofter have a power brick that is external. Consoles are also designed to be more resilient and are far more reliable than gaming laptops in my experience.

That being said, i think a better balance could have been struck with console sizes.

I think sacrificing size for noise and reliability and internal power supply is a good choice. The PS5 was comically huge but the PS5 Slim and Pro are not.

More than PS3 I would expect.

For sure, its worth it. We don't want a repeat of the ps4. However, the pendulum may have swung too far in the other direction.

If emulation is your primary use case I would install Batocera instead. I have one of the mini PCs from Amazon running it and it's a fantastic retro console that plays everything from NES -> PS2/GC at 3x resolution no problem

Depends on the cooling solution used. Just like gaming laptops. Years of IT experience is not required to know that overheating hardware will freeze up my man.

Yea I've tried to make my PC as silent as possible but I can always hear it purring away during low volume gameplay. :(
PS5 and Series X were both dead silent.

Has anyone here ever thought to yourselves. " you know I think we talk about old hardware, new hardware, and new consoles more than the actual games? "

I have a Steam Deck, which is awesome for emulation and native PC games. The problem is I am outgrowing the Steam Deck as I'm playing it more on the dock. Between lossless scaling and frame-gen it's good, but I am looking to completely replace my consoles with it with higher performance. I'm tired of waiting for the rumored Steam Fremont Machine.

Although true, you're spending a considerable amount extra getting cooling to the levels of current consoles.

I learnt that with my previous ITX setup. Still the same hardware, but paid a lot more for a well designed case, fully modular PSU, and decent fan setup.

98 I was. 🤷‍♂️

And if we're going on purely anecdotal experience, I (luckily) didn't have a PS3 that had significant freezing or flashing yellow/red light/booting problems. So... does that mean it wasn't a notable problem of the console, because it didn't happen to me?

Nah.

Butt hurt much, oh, Sony defense force warrior?

This is exactly the type of response I would expect from you. A bad faith comment in which you have no clue what you are talking like much like every single time you ever open your fucking mouth.

And to answer your question, no I'm not butt hurt I just think you are a fucking idiot and I love calling you out on your constant bullshit.

I've played on PC since I was a little kid and I started playing on PC before I got my first console. I play pretty equally on multiple platforms and unlike you I don't "pledge allegiance" to any one platform and constantly feel the need to tell everybody about it and fight for it constantly.

Me trusting Sony less because of YLOD is bullshit?? 🤦

You should be concerned about overall performance. Not individual components.

You want my awesome PC case, loads of space for big, quiet fans and living room friendly.
Similar seem harder to find sadly these days.

These mini PCs are the best thing you can use for emulation cabinets. WAY more powerful than any Pi or Chinese android device and small enough to fit in any bartop.

Because the console was built by the lowest bidder.
Corner are cut everywhere to keep the price down.
Yeah, consoles are a mass market product made to sell (hopefully at least lol) tens of millions of units and meant to be sold at a mass market price (or used to be depending on your definition) which is 100% not the case with any of these mini pcs. A lot of these mini PCs are built by small Chinese companies and cost much much more.

For example lets take Minisforum which is a pretty well known mini pc manufacturer. They have a mini pc that has the Rysen AI 9 HX 370 inside. It costs $930 currently on Amazon and performs roughly the same as the Z1E as far as I can tell (could be wrong as I only looked up a quick benchmark because I was curious and skimmed through it) which is much less powerful then something like a PS5 which is half the price. They also sold a gaming focused model that was $1499 I believe with a 4070 and i7 but didn't include memory or ssd.

You definitely can get more power in smaller packages but it's very different markets as you say with different end goals.

Not him, but after building an ITX pc (Fractal Terra) I don't think I could ever go back to a case that is much bigger. It's so nice.

Quietness of operation is really important for me, no point having a RIG if your other half can't be in the same room without thinking Concorde has moved in.

Mine is a mATX and that's just about all these big bear hands of mine could handle. Building an ITX seems incredibly daunting.
It's not bad at all. I actually think building in this Terra was easier then any Mid/Full size build I've ever done. The entire shell gets removed so it's essentially a frame in the middle and you build on either side of it.

Hardest part of ITX is simply compatibility but that's why I bought the Terra because the inside "spine" can move so if I have lets say a 2 slot GPU I can move it to make more room for a bigger CPU cooler or if I have a big GPU I slide it over and sacrifice CPU cooler height.

Quietness of operation is really important for me, no point having a RIG if your other half can't be in the same room without thinking Concorde has moved in.
I have rarely ever heard my PC at all outside of initializing Fan Control when it goes through 0-100% testing. I've had absolutely no issues with heat or sound in a case with no extra fans at all (I use a Noctua LP CPU cooler).
