How do I create a DOS bootable CD without floppy drive emulation?

Gah!! Why does it have to be so hard? I've been trying to follow "Bart's way" for ages with no luck.

What I'm trying to do is have a CD boot into DOS with the least "overhead" possible, no HIMEM or other memory managers, and have it run my .BAT file upon startup. It's easy to do with "floppy emulation", but I don't want that... Is it too much to ask for clear and linear instructions on how to do it it? This is the internet for goodness sake, come on GAF, prove once again that you're boss.

Best regards,

Your humble fellow frustrated GAFer.

I think you mean bootdisk.com, and yes it's where I found "Bart's page" from. Which seems to be the only comprehensive page on the web about the subject, except that it's a nightmare to follow.

Heh, I feel your frustration...it makes you strong...focused. Ahem, sorry, just watched Episode 3 again. Yeah, there's not really an abundance of clear guides to creating boot discs on the Interweb. I had a bitch of a time setting one up for the company I work for and still use a floppy emulated boot image to this day, as it has no problem fitting all the initial data I need. If your boot image will work with floppy emulation, why are you so opposed to it? It's not as though you actually have to deal with a floppy after the initial setup. Nero will support burning a CD with an HD emulated boot image, but I've yet to really tinker with it. Your best bet is to just burn some pre-existing boot disc, such as those provided by Bart, dissect them, and kind of alter them to your needs. It's how I learned. Anyways, best of luck.

I don't want floppy emulation because I want to be able to access all my drives after booting, the HDD, CD, and floppy. And as far as I know, Bart does not provide any pre-existing boot discs for download. Thanks anyway!

Just load MSCDEX and any necessary CD-ROM drivers and you'll have access to your CD-ROM. Your floppy drive will just be mounted to drive B instead of A, and if your hard drives are FAT32, you'll be able to access them as well. I have such a setup at work and it's functioning fine. All this will work from a floppy-emulated image. Now with an NTFS hard drive partition, things get a little trickier. You'll need third-party stuff or DOS alternatives, but that can still work within the confines of a floppy image.

Hmm, interesting. I'll look into that, thanks.

No problem. Feel free to PM me if you need any help. I can just send you some of the files from the boot disc I made.
