How do UMD discs spin?

They have a tiny hole in the center on the bottom but that's about it. 3.5" Floppies had another hole that you can turn the disk with but I just don't get how this thing works. Magnetic? That would be too unstable methinks.

Yep, it's magnetic. If you look inside the PSP the inner spinning mechanism houses a magnet.

It's like the MiniDisc players... except no gate mechanism.. :(

Did they not have a gate mechanisim just so they could have cool funny-shaped cartridges? It would be so nice if you could just toss the discs in a bag or pocket and not worry about scratches.

I hear round Altoids tins make great holders, though.

In the Northern Hemisphere they spin clockwise and in the Souther Hemisphere they spin counterclockwise!

Yup, and in Australia people wear hats on their feet and hamburgers eat people.

Not with headphones! ...which is the only way PSP should be played since the speakers aren't so hot.

Very true. But I've done more showing off of the PSP than actual playing... :(

Magnetic? So does that mean our discs and drive motors are going to fade over time? I certainly hope not although it wouldn't suprise me if this was another Sony blunder. Hope the laser can hold.
