How do you organize you music on your computer?

For the past few months, i've been tackling the daunting task of organizing my music collection. i've already decided on my music format - FLAC. The main reason is that it's lossless, so i can convert the files back to WAV or another format without losing quality. But my decision is less an issue with sound quality as it is with the fact that it futureproofs your music a great deal, so if a new codec comes out that has more advantages, you don't have to go through the process of reripping your music or transcode it, risking audio quality.

i've currently got my music drive divided into the following folders:

\ - root folder contains music using the convention below
\[mp3 dropbox] - files that were downloaded , not necessarily MP3s
\[rips] - rips of discs waiting to be FLACed
\[streams] - ripped audio netradio audio streams

Using brackets ([ ]) places those folders at the top of a folder listing/window, which makes them easier to get to since they're i access them the most.

The problem i've got now is with deciding on a file structure and naming convention for my files. i'm pretty sure i've got it settled on this:

\first letter of artist\artist\album\track number - artist - track title.flac

Example:

\B\Belly\King\05 - Belly - Super-Connected.flac

It works well for those players that don't sort by track title (ahem... Winamp), and it keeps things in a logical format, when i want to browse files manually. i don't need genre information or the other fields in the track info since i can easily pull that up in Winamp.

Is this what you guys are using? Could there be a better way to organize? It might seem like such a simple thing to decide on, but i'd like some feedback before i apply the changes a few thousand files.

Using iTunes is not a solution. The only good that came from using iTunes was that it forced me to tag my older files after it fucked up years of organizing by hand. i'd much rather know where my music is myself.

Edit: i'm using MP3tag for tagging and converting tags to filenames, etc. There's several other programs that do the same thing, but MP3tag's suited my needs best.

I do the same as Atrex.

Wait till you see the date/year fuckers that love to sort out their music by the date and time they ripped/downloaded it. It is a MESS to locate anything in that garbage.

This method has worked really well for me in the past.

Main Music Folder > Specific Genre Folder > File Name.mp3

For Example:

Greg's Music > Christian > Rich Mullins [Songs] 04. Creed

The file name has all the info I need in it, the Artist, album title in the brackets, the track number, and finally the name of the song. Depending on what music program you use, this comes in handy in keeping all your songs in the correct order, grouped by artist, album, and track number. Of course, if you use ID3 tags, then this system isnt as useful, unless you want it for storing them all in an organized manner. iTunes works great with the ID3 tags and all, but i dont know if it can read the file type your using.

F:\Music is the main folder

inside it's sorted:

Artist\Album

ex:

F:\Music\Blind Guardian\Nightfall In Middle Earth\*.mp3

Main Folder = My Music
Subfolders = Shenmue/Star Wars/Beatles
All Titles = Artist - Song
All music is in My Music, excluding the subfolders

I think my method is the best.

D:\Music\ (a big mess)
I agree, except C:\MP3\ works for me.

I just use winamp's media library to sort them, but mainly I just use one big alpha sorted playlist.

artist name---->album name---->track name

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club\Take Them On Your Own\01 - Stop.mp3

I'm really anal about file name and with ID3 tags, since my car deck reads ID3 tags.

I have my music drive set up as:

/music/0-9
/music/A-C
/music/D-F
/music/G-L
/music/M-R
/music/S-Z
/music/Soundtracks
/music/Various Artists
/music/Singles
/music/The Fall

Inside each respective letter category, it's Artist - Album Title.

The Fall only get their own because I have 70 or so albums in there by them.

I have subfolders for my favorite artists. Each album will get a separate folder. But for my main music folder, it's organized: Artist - Album - Song Number Song title

F:\Artist - Album\songs.mp3

It's a very big list right now, so I think I will switch to

F:\Artist\Album\songs.mp3 in the near future.

Also, unrelated, but --- iTunes needs a fucking "monitor folder" option.

I organize by albums - no need for artists directories, that can be taken care of by the album directories' filename.

So,
G:\Music
...with directories in the form of:
ArtistName - AlbumName (Language) (Date released)

I also use iTunes, which makes things even neater (but is imo no excuse to ditch organized directories).

Full ID3v2 tags with lyrics.

Mp3/Flac located on a sperated drive with G:\Artist\Artist - Album format. I use the Artist dir to cut the load time when accessing the dir over SMB.

I also have an htm file locate din every folder to access the files via my intranet.

Thanks for the input guys. i'm impatient at the moment and so i've already begun converting my files using the conventions i noted above. Now i'm working through the MP3tag's various commands and toying with regular expressions a bit. Takes a bit of work, but it's so rewarding once you've got it figured out.

i'm not really concerned about how other people find my file structure, since i'm not sharing with anyone aside from my roommate (we're sharing certain folders across our network). i thought about including genre information, but it's not really important to me and there's so much variation in how genres are classified that it's not worth it to me.

Later i'll work on reviewing some of those old MP3s i've got that i don't listen to and/or have no intention of buying CDs for. i'm down to 5GB free on my 80GB music partition. i'm also trying to cut down on my pirated stuff, for personal reasons.

What are you using to include lyrics and whatnot? i wouldn't mind adding such features to my files.

Full ID3v2 tags, for one thing. It's a must with UPNP devices.

\\mediaserver\Public\Music\%artist\%album\%title

.pls and .m3u files in each directory as well. Multi-disc albums are in one directory and have a .pls and .m3u for each disc.

iTunes for me; more specifically than that, my MP3s are either organized well in one area, or they're horribly unorganized in another. But the bulk of them are organized. There isn't much there, though.

Thanks. Worked like a charm. :)
Thanks for the TagControl program. i'm pretty happy with the freeware solutions, but i'll keep an eye on that. It's got an amazing set of features.

CD's>Artists>Albums>Tracks

I also have a folder that keeps all the odd ball music that I have like individual tracks and what not. That's arranged alphabetically by artist.

DarthWoo

I'm glad Grandpa porked a Chinese Muslim
D:\Audio\MP3 is where I throw all my MP3s.

Within that folder, I have Comedy, Game, National Anthems, Pop, Show Tunes, and Soundtrack.

Game and Soundtrack are pretty self-explanatory, although I further divide the soundtrack one into anime and movie/tv. Show Tunes is stuff like musicals. Comedy is mainly spoof albums, or actual comedy, i.e. George Carlin. Pop is a catch-all for everything else, from oldies to the rare country piece that my father wanted, so I got it, but I never bother to delete from my own. Within each folder I'll also further divide between full and complete albums, and another folder for orphans that I acquired by themselves somehow.

All in all, my system sucks, but at least I know where everything is.

Pretty much a mess.

C:\MP3\Artist - Album Name\Artist - Album Name - Track Number - Track Name.mp3

Stuff I rip goes to a "ripped" directory until I organize it. Stuff I download to a "new" directory.

I have to sort it all soon.

I did all the dirty work with Tag&Rename. I used TagControl to make the html and get the odd lyric. :p

All in one folder, mp3s, wma, oggs, and mpcs

its usually in this convention

Artist - Title

but if I need more information I'll add album or track numbers to keep the mix right

I don't use tags

Music/Artist/Album/trackname.mp3
and
Music/Soundtracks/Movie (or SOundtrack name)/trackname.mp3

If necessary, I'll break it down further by dividing the artists into alphabetical folders (like A-M and N-Z), but I don't think its a problem yet.

I would hate organizing by genre, cause I don't want to start getting anal about what genre every band is. Though, if I start a collection of like classical songs or something, I might make a section for that, like I did for soundtracks.

I use ID3 tags, whatever comes automatically from CDGrabber/Freedb.

Similar to this, but singles go in the respective artist subdirs, and not so much The Fall.

Also, I have an unsorted directory where I rip or download stuff to, then sort it at a later date.
