How Does One Get Into E3?

Just walk in through the side door:

I apologise for the lack of humour, I was going to say something about penetrating the back door, but thought better of it.

I guess after attending 11 E3s in a row, it's becoming a bit predictable. Either that or seeing downtown LA once a year is too much. :)
I guess I just know what to expect regarding the crowds. That and I live in Southern California. LA is NOT fun.

Wouldnt the easiest way to get in would be to get a job there? Like the people that setup the exhibits. Then waltz in with your uniform and say youre there to fix some tape.

I went a few yrs ago...walked around all day and saw alot of cool things....but those things wont be allowed at the show this year...at least none with breasts hanging out. But who knows, maybe some of the private parties afterwards will still have the style of E3. heh

I only go once every few yrs. Dont like the long drive so I may take the train this yr as it stops a few blocks from the convention center. Then again, i may just read all about it online and kick it at home if I dont have to work the show.

Bullshit! I've attended every single E3 so far and with the exception of a couple years where I had to work at a booth (and that wasn't even that bad), I've really enjoyed attending every show. This year won't be any different

You clearly go to a different E3 than I do.

It's funny because I figured E3 was always that crowded.

Last year was my first E3, and I just happened to win myself an HDTV/5.1 Speaker System/iPod Shuffle. Needless to say it was the best damn time of my life.

Definitely looking forward to going again this year.

If I do well in college, I hope to go with Gamespy(wishes that they are doing the samething like last year). Prays that I do well in college and Gamespy allows hosted sites to go. :)

How does one win such stuff?

Another hosted site person? What site are you with?

Cool man, nice to meet another hosted Gamespy Site Memberl. :) Original I was with 3dactionplanet, but now I am under the planet's site. As you might have guessed, I do Prince of Persia Series. :)

What is your site deal with and which site are you with? If its Mario Kart, then I might have met you at E3 2005. I was there as well. :)

I handed you that iPod shuffle.

Also, I don't "let things bother me." The whole event is a waste of time. You can watch all those kewl vids on the internet at home a week later. E3 isn't nearly the big deal that non-industry-peeps think it is.

The HDTV/Speaker System was won at the Konami booth. They had a lottery wheel thing that you could put your business card into. At the specified time if you were there and they drew your card, you won. If you're not there they just move on.

The Shuffle was won at the Atlus booth. Same deal, except replace the lottery wheel with a small box.

It has gotten a lot harder to get in this year. Last year I worked for Best Buy Home Theater and they let me in. This year I got denied. You can always pay $500 to get in even if your application is denied. But there's no way I'm paying that to get in this year. I'm going to Japan for 3 weeks anyway. That will have to suffice.

I remember Konami's booth was insane right before it shut down on the last day. They gave out like $500 if you had an unused ticket stub for the Star Wars movie and was the first to give it to them. I swear that event got really out of hand. Nothing worse than desperate gamers on the brink of fights for even a free tshirt.

Your opinion does not equal fact. Others obviously disagree so please stop posting as if we are wrong just because we think E3's a great trade show.

Even though you get a much more digestible experience from watching the vids at home, in your underoos... actually getting to play/see a smaller sample of the games first hand is still pretty awesome, and is a more thrilling experience -- despite the fact that it's a horrible environment to actually do so.

If you become desensitized to the point where you completely lose that curiousity... that is a sad thing :/. I feel kinda bad for industry folk who are no longer "gamers", and couldn't care less to browse around and see what everyone else is making. You can look at a picture of a famous painting in a book, and think "yeah, ok"... but seeing it in a museum you get a different kind of appreciation. :)

I got into E3 so freaking easily last year. I could have used "real" credentials like others do but then I'd owe a favor so I just filled in their bullshit registration form on their site, gave them my cash and got in.

They're not going to push you against a wall and do a cavity search on you before they let you in, as long as your creditcard goes through and they get your money that's all they care about.

Anyway, not going in as media sucks because you have to wait long lines to play for 10 minutes and E3 is way too crowded. I went last year but I can't see myself going there ever again (unless I go in as a dev). It's one of those, been there done that, deals.

freebies rock though

Uh, of course it is really damn easy to get into E3 if you pay. But most people don't have $500 lying around (the price it is now for exhibits only) to pay their way in, so they want to get in on the "industry" free-ride.

I'm one of Deezer's flunkies over at TMK. I was at e3 2003, but I wasn't around during the "hosted sites get yelled at session", or whatever it was. I actually didn't use my Gamespy "credentials", instead covering it for a radio station. I doubt I'll get picked up for that again this year...

Oh man, I rememmber meeting some of your partners from the Mushrrom Kingdom, I think you might know Jeff.

Last year was with its fun power outages and the whole Gamespy's Hosted sites getting media badges.. *Good Times* .... :lol

Maybe I'll see you this year.

I'm still mad I missed GAF Meetup 2005... 2004 went fairly well.

I want to go to the developer's part of the show but never been there before. Is there a different registration required? or do I still have to pay 500 bucks in order to talk to a couple of publishers? :)

it's hard trying to get your first game published you know :)

also; I went to ECTS 04 and London gameshow 04 and 05 and admittance for developers was only $50 for three days.

so they let anyone who pays 500$ in, even if they don't have any kind of entertainment industry affiliation ?!?
No you have to have affiliation of some kind. It is just not that hard to get affiliation.

There's some truth to this and I say this from the perspective of someone who has attended every E3 and TGS since 1995 (even before TGS was called TGS). If you are attending E3 to conduct actual business - forget it. There are far better venues and circumstances for getting real work done. If you are there to showcase a game and get media coverage, it's certainly fine but still not the best way to go about it. All the major third parties conduct a media day well before E3 for this very reason.

If you are simply there to see games, play games and a catch a glimpse of things that may not be released for many months or even years, E3 is certainly THE show.

Like LA's abysmal traffic however, E3 has become progressively more and more crowded each year and that certainy takes some of the fun away. Perhaps it is time to institute a TGS-like approach where the first day is only open to specific industry staff.

It's been like that since E3 2000 at least.. (when the passes were only $275.)

You spend a ton of cash to basically get treated like dirt by developers, publishers, and the press.. Damn those french journalists hogging the Gamecube duffle bags =( Meeting Miyamoto was worth it tho =)

This man speaks the truth. I just called the e3 customer service line and asked about packages 1-4 for the general public. His response: "Yes, we have priced the packages so that only the most dedicated and insane gamers can join us." :lol

Anyways, I think I'm going to bite and go this year.

I went last year, good chance I'll go again this year - since last year, though it doesn't seem to go along with the general consensus, I had a really frickin good time.

And this year it's going to be much, much bigger.

Oh, and you can get in as a student, too.
It isn't advertised, but my younger brother and his friends got in with a special 'student pass.'

What was I thinking*I got the names messed up*... I meant to say Drew. You probably know him.

nobody in the industry has fun at E3. What a cruel lie you've been fed.

Roland speaketh the truth.

Parties=gud. Show itself=hell.

I'm glad that some of the non-industry weasels are trying to be weeded out though. Dilution of purpose and additional expense trying to sate them in the past.

I'd need a picture or more info. Where would I know him from?

I have come to the conclusion that sitting in GAF's DC++ hub spamming the fuck outta the chat window (with everyone else) throughout the entirity of the Nintendo conference, is more fun. Infact it can be fucking hilarious

I didn't take picture with him. I met him and rest of the Mushroom Kingdom Team at the first day of E3, when we trying to get our passes. We all worked together. Also I think he lives in Virginia or North Carolina or where along there. Plus you have someone as sighting editor and others just editors. Oh plus he just graduated from college last year.

That's all I can remember...

Indeed, from what I hear about E3 from industry people, is that they aren't there to "play games" like all non-industry and media types, and most of them wind up spending the whole show stuck in administrative meetings or trying to make publishing deals.

Which means that if I do get into the industry soon, this may very well be my last E3 :(

I'm so horribly confused about this -- then again, I did get processed before a chunk of the others did, so that could explain it.

The only downside is this year's E3 will be a sausage fest.

I haven't been to E3 in years. The last one I attended was the last one in Atlanta before the resting place was decided to be L.A. After attedning several shows (and CES in before E3 was the trade show of shows), I don't kow if I'll ever go again. Since all I care about is info, I just get most stuff onlie. Besides I'm a lot older and grumpier now, and I hate crowds of people, long lines, and waiting in long lines. E3 is too insane for me these days...not very relaxing at all. Ah but the memories do last a lifetime. :D

Tally one more up for the "E3 isn't what it's cracked up to be" side. I truthfully had a hell of a time at the hotel hanging out in real life with good online friends that I had known for ages. The show wasn't as fun by a longshot.

Pity I won't be able to make it this year...hanging out with them was a blast :(
