How does the resolution of the PSP for UMD movies compare to TV's?

I thought in a thread yesterday someone said that UMD's because of the PSP screen are actually at a lower resolution? There has been some commenting in various threads about creating a home grown UMD player... but if the resolution is lower on the PSP screen doesn't that mean it'll look a bit crappy on home TV's?

No I have no idea what I'm talking about, just following a kernel of a thought that popped in my head when someone made a resolution comment in one of the PSP threads recently....

I don't think anyone knows for sure what the native resolution of UMD video is right know. Could be as low as the PSP's screen resolution or it could be higher in order to accomodate future UMD-enabled devices with higher screen resolutions. I believe Sony had indicated that the PSP could handle the decoding of 720x480 res. MPEG4 video which would be equivalent of full-spec DVD video, but I don't think there's been any specs announced on UMD video to confirm that.

Wouldn't it be stupid of Sony and UMD publishers if they bothered to make UMD videos bigger than 480x272? It's not like there's tons of room on UMD for video....

If Sony wants to estabilish the UMD as a viable video format, they better support at least NTSC resolutions. Since UMD uses MPEG4 AVC, they can probably fit a DVD quality movie on it (without the extras).

You don't fool me... I know you hope that's the case. ;)
