How flexible is WoW's class/race system?

How flexible is WoW's class/race system? Is it like AD&D where race defines your class or is like like D&D3e where any race can be any class. I don't expect one of those skeleton dudes or orcs to be a paladin, but is it flexible enough to allow, say an elf to be a paladin?

I was planning on going back to EQ2, but I heard after that combat system revamp they did last Tuesday, the game sucks even more now (from the flame wars going on in the official forums, it seems to me you need to rely on grouping to kill stuff even more). Now I'm putting some serious thought into playing WoW or waiting for DDO.

Night Elves (yuck) can be a paladin (double yuck).

Some classes are available to all classes, some classes are available to certain ones.

Paladin = Human and Dwarf

and there are too many elves. The Alliance instituted a night elf breeding program after Warcraft 3 that went out of control.

No, it's like EQ1 where you are limited to the classes they want the races to be so you cannot be a Night Elf Paladin.

Actually I've been soloing more than grouping after the revamp since things don't "grey out" as quickly as before I can hunt a LOT more different things and get exp much faster than before.

There's a reason why they call all MMORPG official forums the "WhinePlay" boards; it's where all the bitchers go to bitch. That goes for any MMORPG.

No they can't.

Warrior is the only class available to all races.

Roofle, shows how long it's been since I've given the game up. Both Night elves and Paladins are still yuck, though.

"Warrior is the only class available to all races."

That would qualify as some, wouldn't it?

I really like the D&D 3.0 system (which EQII copied). If I want to play a Dark Elf Paladin, I like the choice. The same thing goes for playing a Dwarf Necromancer, etc.

Too bad Vanguard is going with the EQ/WoW system of restricting classes depending on what race you are.
