Nintendo made real mistake with the N64, going cartridge and ditching third parties were extremely bad moves. Also, the hardware power was nice but the design wasn't well thought of. A chip for sound AND graphics was a bad idea. The console also lacked ram and texture cache. With a better chipset design and CD format, Nintendo would have kept their lead. Sony doesn't look like someone making bad moves regarding hardware right now.

Apple didn't launch another diskman against Sony, they launch the Ipod. It is very different technology wise. The 360 and PS3 are not that different.

unless sony really is looking at launching a year after the x360, $299 won't happen. those are MS/xbox style loses for god sake.

I predict a similar hedge as the PSP. A "Value Pack" with low-cost stuff bundled in designed to cushion the blow. I'd say $350, with a drop to a "core" set for $299 for the holidays. The early adopters won't mind the higher price, ala PSP.

Sony has always taken large losses on hardware, initially. The difference between that an an xbox situation is that they control the manufacturing almost completely, and can reap the rewards over time as volumes grow (and with a playstation platform it's a pretty safe bet that large volumes will be there). They won't be taking such losses forever, in fact it would be for a relatively short period relatively speaking. Look at PS2 - very expensive to manufacture initially, but now, and for some time, Sony has been creaming some pretty profits off every unit sold.
