How intrusive are apps on Android nowadays when the average user can limit permission?

Android has a feature that lets the user limit the amount of access each apps have. For example, I can choose to deny an app access to my camera, storage, location, microphone, etc. Back in the days, I remember there were privacy concerns with certain apps because of the amount of permission they were given access to on a daily basis.

At present, Android has a feature that lets you select what kind of access each apps can have.

Being able to manage push notifications on a system level, and limit location access to only when the app is in use are the major ones for me.

It could be even better. I don't trust some apps with full storage access and would prefer if it was available only on user demand rather than the implied continuous access.

We also need protection for our data in the hands of other users. For example, if I'm added to a whatsapp group with a bunch of low security users and their address book is being accessed by a dodgy app I start getting scam calls.

Permission needs to be one layer deep and never permanent.

The moment you turn it on, China will already know everything about you so why care? What do you have to hide anyway? What will the chinese even do with your porn history?

Those persmission things are bullshit. We've seen companies in the past give users the appearance of an option, yet it changes nothing except on a visual level.

China, America and every advertising and marketing agency from Boston to Beijing has your data. C'est La Vie

Beware that these are working only for Android apps with certain build sdk (this needs to be specified inside the app manifest), if devs choose to opt out for lower version this checking does not work for the app. Which is strange omission by Google...

Know exactly what kind of honey pot trap to run on me?

"Hey, I'm your long lost step-sister and this is my step-mom, wanna bang??"

I just wish apps would still function without lots of seemingly broad permission sets. Does an app that monitors my thermostat really need access to my microphone/camera, storage, and location before it can work?

I'm not sure but I'm willing to bet that even with every permission disabled, the Facebook app will still find some way of tracking you. That shit is harder to eradicate than herpes. The only solution is to not install the app, or uninstall it completely.
