How Many Systems Can You Afford to Support?

And I'm not just talking monetarily. I work most of the day and when I get home I usually have things that need to get done around the house. If not that, then I get together with friends for a game of basketball or swimming to compensate for sitting on my ass all day. They usually play my games because I'm so tired I couldn't give a damn by that time. And I'm not guaranteed to get play time during the weekend either. I devoted an entire morning afternoon to my Xbox, but that is a rare occurrence. At this point, I could have enough money to buy a DS, PSP and 360, but I really don't know if I could devote time to them to play their respective software.

It's really this phenomenon that's got me thinking about what platform I purchase next. The platform that's kind of catching my eye is the PSP. It's slick, delivers a near console experience and I can play it anywhere I have time. The only thing is that at its price I'd be sacrificing a main console for the foreseeable future. The price of the unit and software kinda discourage me from buying anything else to support. Plus, I'd only have enough time to play those games.

I really want to buy a 360 at launch. If Most Wanted and Oblivion are in the launch window I'd be more than happy to pick each up and sit on them, as those titles will have longevity. Call of Duty 2 looks nice as well to kind of round out the experience. But, will I be able to give time to this system I just paid x amount of money for?

Anybody else in the same boat? Anyone else really weighing the decision of their next platform purchase?

Yeah, this generation is the first that I owned more than one system (I owned all of them, including the DC), and I realize that I have too much systems and too many games that I want to play. I'll try to settle with at the most 2 home consoles and one portable next-gen.

I bought every this gen console, although this time around, even though I could support all 3 again, I doubt I will. I'm leaning towards PS3 and the Rev as it stands, although only Sega could change that decision...

I usually only get one, but I got an Xbox recently because I wanted to have some online fun. Because of this though I'll be a mid to late adopter to the next gen. Oh well.

Nope I'll buy them all, and have them all plugged in to the game room in my house...

Then... as time passes...

I use them only occasionally yet I'll still buy the games I want as soon as they come out....

I'll lament here and on IRC how I never have time to get all the playing I want in, and complain about how far back I am in my own game queue.

I'll then do it all over again in the generation that comes after.

"About 20 million"

I have a problem where I buy anything that looks new and cool looking, and offers any game I might want to play at some point in mylife. SNES, sega, sega cd, game boy, game boy color, game boy advance, game boy SP, N64, playstation, PS2, X-Box, Nintendo Gamecube, and have a PSP... Hopefully in the next era of gaming I'll limit myself to a PS3 and maybe a rev... but who knows what might happen

For the a long time I just had my trusty DC and a Gamecube. I broke down and bought an xdude about a year ago. But honestly I dont really have time to play them. Im fine with what I own now, Im looking foward to Conker and Zelda. I dont have alot of time to play games and remain fairly broke so Im probably gonna back off from next gen intially.

Probably two, with one getting far more support than the other.

I did get three this generation (PS2, GameCube, Dreamcast), but Dreamcast doesn't count since I didn't buy it until about a month after the price dropped to $100 and almost every game was heavily discounted.

I have a PS2, a Gamecube, and a GBA SP. I had to look around my house for about a half-hour last week to find the GBA, and I still don't know where the charger is. My GC has gotten about five hours of play this year. My PS2 has gotten about an hour a day from me on average. I've only bought three games this year across all systems, haven't paid more than $20 for any of them, and haven't opened any of them, either.

So as it stands I'm really skeptical about next gen--I don't have the time, and I haven't heard of anything that's original enough to grab my interest and merit the $300-$500 outlay. I don't see me buying any of the systems at launch, and I have a suspicion that at least one or even two of the three home consoles will end up dying due to lack of public interest.

I may buy a DS before the end of the year, but that's nowhere near definite, and with my gaming habits these days it may end up gathering dust as well.

There's too many games I haven't gotten to (along with upcoming releases despite the naysayers) to worry about jumping on them all at day 1. It's definitely a time issue. I'll let the games I want to play as they come out guide my decisions. The only real push for me is LIVE which sort of sucks, but I have a large community of gamers I play with regularly. Do I want to sit that out for a while? Urgh.

The thing I hate most is when people that post on message boards assume that just because a person is not a multi-console owner, that said person is somehow poor, jobless, or borderline homeless.

This generation I have owned all three consoles and a PSP. My PS2 broke and I never bothered to fix it. My Gamecube collected dust and I gave it away. I only play my Xbox and PSP. When I had all my consoles up and running I just simply did not have the time to play all 3 of them. I would buy all the big games for each respective system and then they would pile up in a corner because I didn't have time to play them. It was a huge colossal waste of money that I wish I had back.

Next generation, I am not going to purchase all 3 consoles. I will only be purchasing one of them. Not because I'm poor, but because I'm not going to blow the kind of money I did this generation on games that I don't even have time to play.

You know you don't have to buy the console(s) at launch. You can just buy the games and put it away on the shelves. When the time comes when you have enough money then you can buy the console(s).

Unitil then just keep buying games at a affordable price. :D

I've got the DS and PSP already, and I'll be getting a Revo and PS3 when they hit. MS failed to entice me with their Xbox, and so far the 360 does nothing for me, but should it provide where the first console failed (in my eyes), I'll pick that up as well.

For me, the time issue is the biggest thing as well. I'll most likely only get one console next gen, as I play a lot on the PC as well, and have my PSP to feed too. :)

No more launch systems for me. I like to vulture systems from disappointed launch purchasers on eBay like my $86 DS.

For now PS2 RPG's are a-plenty and the DS is getting some good shit this Xmas and GBA is getting some amazing games this summer. There is no real reason to upgrade to next gen unless they come up with something better than the same FPS bullshit. And I have a PC and no use for a "media hub" or customized gamer tags/shells/or whatever the fuck Xbox live is selling.

2007 or 2008 does seem like a long ways off.

What he said. I even broke my handheld embargo and bought both a DS and a PSP (and a shitload of games for them) within the last month.

It makes the most sense to be a multi-console/platform gamer as well as you can afford. You get to play the best of everything. New game prices drop quickly on everything but the million-sellers. Used games have never been more affordable or plentiful between brick & mortar stores and online. Then you have all the rental opportunities from traditional video stores or rent by mail places like Gamefly.

All of them. Will I though? Hell no.

There's only so much time for gaming, and I'd rather focus on a single platform that offers the most bang for my buck. Max is 2 systems, but this gen I found that I support one over the other and one of them always collects dust. A waste of money...as much as I want all the systems, I'll probably stick with one console in the end.

We should form a club or something. :p

all three, with a highly selective choice of games.

Uno, in terms of cost of time.
Same here.
If I really wanted to, I could buy them all.
But I only have time to play one.

Besides, I'm sure friends will buy the other one's...hence, multiplayer gaming :)

I owned all consoles this gen (DC, XBox, PS2, GC). And I could probably do so again next gen but I've decided not to. There are so many deals out this gen I literally have stacks of unplayed/unopened games. Cheapassgamer.com has kept my mail man busy. ;) These will keep me busy well into the next gen. I don't have time to play all the cool stuff I have now.

I'll probably own two of the next gen consoles. XBox360 is a given at launch. I liked what M$ did with the online aspect (XBox LIVE) and that console had the games that I'm personally more geared to play. I'll probably grab the PS3 some time after it's launch. I'm done with Nintendo. One AAA title every six months is just not going to cut it for me. Don't bash me Nintendo fans, it's just that the N64 and GC were great but I felt lacking in terms of software for my tastes (but Sin & Punishement IS the reason to own a N64...but I'm digressing).

I've also decided not to keep up on upgrades for my PC just to play high-end PC games. It's just not worth it, and I'm like playing game in the comfort of my gaming loft. Sure there are positives and negative to this stance, but it makes the most sense to me. Bt last year I spent big money for TWO games (Half-LIfe 2, Doom 3).

So next-gen I'm all about the XBox360, and maybe the PS3 if they give me more of the types of games I like (sorry not all of us are into Japanese RPGs, Gran Turismo, and Grand Theft Auto). With the huge leap in technology and the increase in game prices I want more bang for my buck. this hobby is already expensive, so I'm instututing my own system of controls. I've got to get this hobby under control. ;)

For desire, time and money I only have enough to support one(Nintendo). I mainly just want to stick with the cream of the crop games, the problem is they are spread to all systems.

I've always had only 1 console per generation. I like to limit the money, energy and time I spend on games, to a large degree. Problem is, I have no choice but to go for the Nintendo console, given that I'm a sucker for new renditions of their franchises, which are must-haves for me. If they release the next Zelda/Metroid/Mario, I have no choice.

I can only realy support one mainly. But as always I always buy all next gen. systems and wait for the games to fall in price.

I really don't buy full priced games now(the last year I have bought maybe two fully priced games..Halo2 and Doom3.) For me 've got to look around for deals because theres too much software I want and am not about to pay full value for them,it just can't be done.

For me-GameRush is a gamer's best friend nowdays. Like I just scored on their buy two used, the 3rd is free deal wheich they have going again. Hell I scored God of War,Republic Commando, and Mercenaries, all for 30 dollars after trading in games on the deal. I'm set forquite awhile with these 3.

When the 360 arrives it'll be my main console for quite awhile, becaue the Halo,PGR, and FORZA series are instant buys for me,along with Xbox Live. Not that I will not own a PS3,but that'll be when I see a Greatetst Hits line appear, which will probably be a year after thesystem has been out. Ofcourse things could change though-if I see Sega Rally 3 on the PS3 then no doubt I wil purchase one the day that this game releases, but will probably rent alot rather than buy any other software after that. Theres ways around it,you can enjoy the new consoles without having to buy so many full priced games. Renting and trading up are a life saver for the cheap ass gamers like me out there:)

For the past few generations IÂ’ve had all the available consoles, but IÂ’m starting to rethink my position in regard to next gen.

Not so much because of time or money, but by having them all I tend to just buy the best of the best, relative to my preferences, for each console.

IÂ’ve recently started picking up a lot of the games I had skipped on from the past few years and the results have lead me to believe that I would have had a lot more variety, uniqueness and overall enjoyment had my attention not been so divided.

Â… very difficult to resist new gaming toys though.

The only system I own right now is a PSP. Software is coming out pretty slow so I'm happy with it. Gives me a chance to play and enjoy the games coming out, instead of stuffing them in a backlog, just to rush through it.

For consoles, probably only one with a lot of releases. In the end I'll probably only own a PSP and a PS3.

I've found that as my time at work gets more demanding, portable systems like the PSP and DS get more time from me and are therefore better purchases. Being able to fill in all the little spaces in my day with some gaming is really nice. I can usually find an hour or more to play my PSP everyday, but damned if I can manage an hour in a row. Oh, and I fly. A lot.

Two systems per generation.

This generation was PS2 & Xbox, and next generation will be a Sony whitewash. :D

* PSP (European launch)
* PS3 (European launch)

I can afford all 3, and have bought all 3 (also the DS, PSP, GBA, GBA SP, and soon Micro), but next-gen I'm most likely going to limit myself to 2. Time is a more of a limiting factor than money.

PC - new releases worth a crap are slowing down. I buy 2-3 PC games a year.

console - PS3 is a must, I will probably cave in and get a rev for N exclusives. X360.. not sure, didn't buy an xbox this gen - too many PCish games that I would rather play on my PC.

handhelds - GBA used to be my road trip pal. Now its PSP.
