How old is too old for Pokemon?

Error2k4 said:
ironic thing is that, behind it's 'kiddy' coat Pokemon has a lot more depth and gameplay than many of these so called 'mature' games :p

Of course, it also has more depth and intelligence put into it than the majority of entertainment targeted towards mainstream adults. Reality tv anyone?

Why the hell are you debating whether Pokemon is mature or not?

Is it not blindly obvious that anything Ash says is a metaphore for the suffering in Afghanistan?

Honestly? In the real world? By the time you're 10 or 11 you should be growing out of Pokemon. Your girlfriend's reaction is one 80% of people would have.

If you're a gamer and you play it because you appreciate the design & mechanics etc. I guess that's fine, but don't expect people to understand.
qft. if she's hot you should have just let it slide you cheap bastard. :lol

im sure she has plenty of awful hobbies (if any) though and if you don't take it so personally it isn't so bad. welcome her into your world. show her when you catch a new pokemon and if she seems uninterested then shove the game boy in her face. ive had this problem before with my working designs games and you'd be surprised how much a little humorous berating can help your situation.

Pokemon > your girlfriend.

Not even the animes and a shitton of merchandise can make pokemon itself a bad game. While Pokemon sure as hell is a franchise mainly targeted at children, that doesn't mean you have to pass up on a good RPG because of this perception.

You apparently haven't watched the show well enough then.
I'm generalizing, of course, but I've watched at least two hundred episodes of the thing, across all seasons. :p I mean, yes, absolutely there are wonderful episodes like Team Rocket letting go of their Pokemon (my favorite episode BTW, kudos for referencing it), but those are the exception. Mostly it's filler, albeit good filler.

btw, since Pokemon D/P are coming soon, I need to get back into the beat. Does Pokemon FireRed or LeafGreen would be a great choice?
Yes. Best Pokemon available, still better music than R/S/E, cheapest price (can probably find it $20 new even now, but you definitely would be able to by October 2nd when they go Player's Choice).

I have always felt that people who think they are "too old" for something are the ones who need to grow up. Especially when it comes to things like Disney and Mario.

Enjoy what you want to enjoy, and don't let others tell you what you should or shouldn't like.

Alright people, lets get some ****ing perspective.

Fair play if you like Pokemon...you should enjoy whatever you want to enjoy!

But do not defend it to the hilt by giving bullshit examples that it contains mature themes.

Just take it for what it is...An average RPG with a collection hook.

Pretending it has hardcore mature themes, and that the Cartoons are anything but aimed at 7 year olds makes your arguments seem even more futile.

Just own up, and admit that Pokemon is a videogame/anime franchise primarily aimed at kids.

We now have no problems!

Winner, seriously I couldn't have said it better myself. The concept was novel to me when it came out, but I outgrew it and moved on...personal preference.

Anyone who watched Pokemon when it first aired and claims that they don't know the theme song is a goddamn liar. Most likely you remember some of the PokeRap too.

Still, you ignored my main point, being that the battles more often than not have more going on than the battles in the game do. That's one thing that many people knocking the anime seem to miss.

Not to mention that ironically enough said filler provides character development. Though I do agree there's too much in there at times.

No one is missing that, we just realize the show is not a game that you play (you know the point of an interactive medium) it is simply eye rupturing pablum.

Lol at the irony in the latter half in your post. I wonder if you actually read into mine.

I did read yours. What happens in the show happens because the medium it was created in is a static one so the creators can completely control the action as opposed to a game where the creators have to account for a whole lot moreso the action is seemingly (if you don't know what is going on) is more limited. And I do realiuze that "eye rupturing pablum" seems like an oxymoron it is amazingly apt for something as visually stimulating and trite as Pokemon.

Except that it isn't, if you actually paid attention to the battles in the show, which involve a lot more than the battles in the games. And frankly, with more progressive battle systems in game series such as "Tales of...", Star Ocean, and Valkyrie Profile, there isn't much excuse for that to be the case.

I see the difference between a scripted, static television show and a interactive game is lost on you.

No it's not. I'm only seeing that the difference between a purely turn-based battle and a more action based one full of reversals, counterattacks, surprise moves, and clever use of environment among other things is lost on you instead. Not to mention that the former is a lot more static than the other despite the interactive nature.

We aren't talking about card games, are we?

KH is not only incredibly juvenile, it's a shitty game. At least Pokemon is fun.

PS: you lose, hypocrisy for the win.

Wow, KH is not a shitty game. At least it has a coherent story unlike pokemon. And, Pokemon is targeted to a more younger demographic than KH making. Hell one can argue that Mario and KH are both just as juvenile.

PS: You haven't answered my question yet and why would it make a difference if it was a card game or not? You are still battling and their are some major elements that are retained in the game it just makes dueling more visable.

kaizoku

I'm not as deluded as I make myself out to be
pokemon has incredible depth, building a strong team to battle others is a challenge fit for any gamer imo.

and if you find your level 100s team losing to a 10 yr olds level 100s team, you know you've been out manouvered, its not just down to luck or button mashing. Thats not easy to achieve in a game, it levels the playing field.

imo its more embaressing to be doing "geeky" stuff than it is to be doing "childish" stuff. like card games or dungeons and dragons....

but at some stage you gotta stop caring what other people think.

GOTTA CATCH 'EM ALL*

My senior caption (final goodbye that you write that goes next to your senior picture in the yearbook) was "Gotta Catch 'Em All!"

Many people told me I'd regret it when I was 30 or 40 looking at it. But I honestly do not feel I will, and I will probably just want to play Pokemon.

The real pokemon games are great at any age, the show is shit and has always been so. If you are still watching that at 25 then there is something wrong.

No, there's something wrong if you don't realize what the show has going for it that the games don't.

You pretty much hit it there. Hey if you are older and like this sort of thing I think that's fine. Expect the same kind of looks though as you would if buying Fisher Price toys, or anything else geared toward kids.

I'm not into Pokemon but I live near the Osaka Pokemon Center, so I figured I stop in there one day to see what it's all about. Let's just say I felt a little bit like Michael Jackson with the amount of kids in there :lol

There should be no limit to enjoyment. However, I got out of Pokemon at the age of 13.

However, I may be getting back into it temporarily with Diamond and Pearl :D

When I was in grad school I went to one of those touring Pokemon tournament that went to all the different malls. They were giving away free Mews, and I wasn't going to miss out on that shit just because I was in my mid-20s.

So I show up and I'm easily one of the older people there aside from parents. I'm sure some of them were kinda wierded out by me, because I probably looked like a druggie that wandered off the street. My roomates and I drank and smoked quite a bit then. We also rarely went to sleep before three or four. I had to make a concerted effort to drag my hung-over ass out of bed to make it to the Santa Monica Promenade on time.

Anyway, I played in that tournament and got my ass handed to my by an 11-year-old in the second round. I scored my Boulder Badge though, so it was all good.

Also:

In the olden days Drinky Crow would have been the second poster. And he'd have dished out the label "manchild" about a dozen times by now.

You're not too old. It's your business, nobody can judge your fun (or well, unless it's torturing or killing someone/animal).

What you should ask yourself about is why you are so insecure with yourself --- to the point of even feeling better making a thread here. I mean, it clearly proves you are not at ease at what you think and do. Assume yourself and stop giving too much of a damn about other people.

powerless or are they? o_O
To be honest, at the time I actually thought nothing of picking it up. It was just another videogame to me that I wanted to try. I've never been embarassed about liking video games and even anime, heck my girlfriend watches the adult swim block with me on saturdays. It's just the first time I ever really got embarassed like that in public and reflected on something like this. I started this thread in hopes of also finding if a similar story had occured with any of the other posters here.

My wife got embarrassed before when I was discussing import shooters at a party before. But it shouldn't matter in the long run because if I expected to think everything I did was awsome and didn't bother her she would be a doormat.

Aww. :) Aren't you a cutie? OK, I'll bite.

[22:48:34] Tacky: Would you ever be embarrassed to be with me if I bought a certain game? :)

[22:49:28] Tacky's Girl: Madden.
[22:49:35] Tacky: (nods) Third choice?
[22:50:29] Tacky's Girl: Tie for anything with "Barbie" in the title or anything based on a pop star. (Tacky's edit: Michael Jackson's Moonwalker was the first or second game I bought for my Genny. :( )
[22:50:41] Tacky: What about DOAX?
[22:50:57] Tacky's Girl: No, why would that be embarassing?
[22:51:20] Tacky: I wouldn't know. :)
