How should reviewers handle Splatoon's online being gradually rolled out?

No they aren't. If Splatoon was a complete game at launch with a season pass for future DLC then you could compare the two, as it stands the two concepts are nothing alike. I feel like I'm shouting at a wall at this point. Splatoon is a multiplayer-centric game launching with 5 maps, one mode, no voice chat, and no private matches. You have to wait for the rest of the content to be released. Buying an unfinished game at launch is not the same thing as purchasing a season pass to get future DLC for a finished game at launch You have not made a single reasonable argument that the two are even remotely comparable.

You're really missing it hard.

They are carving stuff out of Arkham Knight and selling it to you for $40 extra, and doing this a year ahead of release. Then unlocking the full game over time.

At least Splatoon isn't selling you part of a game for $60 and selling you the rest of it for $40. They're selling you an entire game that arrives in installments lol.

Here, I'll just quote this because you seem to be missing the forest for the trees.

How do you know that? Show me a source that says the season pass content is already finished and on the disk.

Ok so I'm sure you can show me a source for that as well.

It isn't, he's saying its carved out of the production and saved to release later.

You know... like the content that isn't on the disc for Splatoon.

Yeah, the whole ordeal has been kind of a hot mess.

That having been said, I don't think reviewers will be unkind. It will probably be a spartan base game, but the code will be rocksolid. Right?

funny how driveclub gets roasted for this and this game gets a pass since its nintendo

Seems like the opposite to me.

Team Fortress 2 did it years ago and people were fine with it.

Killer Instinct did it recently, and is still doing it, and people are fine with it.

Nintendo does it, and people FREAK THE FUCK OUT, and suddenly Nintendo is an awful company who is scamming everyone and releasing an unfinished product and anybody who disagrees is dismissively labelled an idiotic Nintendo loyalist who defends everything the company does.

If you have a problem with how Nintendo is rolling this game out, then wait until August for everything to be out and then buy it.

If you don't have a problem with it and would like to experience it a few months earlier, then you can pick it up this month.

Why is this so hard for some people to wrap their heads around?

I'm sure the feeling is mutual.

If you can't see how Arkham Knight's situation is not only similar, but exponentially worse, then this discussion should just end. It's not going to go anywhere if both sides refuse to acknowledge valid points from the other, and that's a waste of everyone's time.

Of course, this is the internet, so we could all just butt heads like goats until the others leave. That's more likely to happen at least.

There's really nothing implying that the game will get slammed in reviews considering the glowing previews it's gotten so far so I agree generally. The only thing I feel is going to be a key point is whether reviews will consider the lastability of existing content to be enjoyable enough to lead into more good content. In the case of something like Destiny, that wasn't so favorable. In the case of TF2, it was universally lauded.

Honestly I think the game will do low to mid 80's which will be decent for a new IP. Honestly I'm not super into Multiplayer games much, but I'm starving for more info into that single player, the small peek at it they showed last year looked cool. I'm sure there are gonna both low and high reviews like any game, it's a new IP so some may like the idea and execution, and others won't. As I stated earlier though, updates are fine, but the score should be static, and based on the core game that releases.

But again, not liking what the game offers or finding that the game lacks content, doesn't mean it is an unfinished game.

Everything in the Direct today (most of it which has been known from before) shows a finished game to many of us. (Not even removed content than later was patched)

During the Direct, all that was in my mind was about hpw many things are in there. The attention to detail, the gear along the perks, the well designed maps, the different stores and storeowners, the weapons (subwespons, etc), abilities, the "main lobby" from which you either play single ayer or online, local multi, etc.

I think we had a thread in here asking about if Nintendo would have post launch content as a sign of they caring for this franchise, this Direct basically answered "yes" to that question.

Now, that 5 maps and lack of modes/variety is not to your liking or heck the "standards" of other games, doesn't mean is not finished. Is just not the game you expected or wanted.

I'm honestly not even convinced that the maps are being held back because they couldn't be finished in time. I think that Nintendo is trying to sustain excitement about the game over a longer period.

I'd love to see a source for that as well.

So you want a source on this claim that would show Batman to be an unfinished, chopped up game that is being sold to you piecemeal (pre-launch, at that, mind)... but to you (no source required, it would seem, for you to draw this conclusion) Splatoon is an obviously unfinished game being shipped unfinished with chopped up piecemeal delivery at a later date.

I hope you notice the obviously two-faced nature and mental gymnastics of what you're trying to say. There's obviously no source to either aside from cynicism.
Its rather obvious that Splatoon was made to release at this date with whatever they could get out the door, which is why they were so vague on release details through the months.

Let's say that Warner doesn't have a good track record with DLC... or Batman, for that matter. These are the same people who prioritized selling DLC for a game to fixing said bug-ridden game.

I agree, I'm pretty sure at least some of the maps are already done and are being strategically held back to keep the game alive throughout at least the whole summer, which is a great idea. Presumably the maps are free (I think the Direct confirmed this), so it's not like consumers are exactly being screwed out of content here. It might be a bit slow at launch with only 5 maps, but that should allow for people to get accustomed to the game and get unlocks with a smaller number of maps in the early weeks. Plus, (semi) weekly updates have always been a good motivator for me to keep playing a game over an extended period of time. It's cool to have new content to look forward to each week rather than waiting several months at a time for a massive release that you could potentially get burned out on faster than the slow simmer a gradual, timed series of releases would have.

Well whatever then. This argument doesn't seem to be going anywhere. We're obviously not going to agree here. Hope you enjoy Splatoon.

How likely would Nintendo release a Spatoon Ultimate edition? I would rather prefer buying the disc with most of these modes on the disc. This news really bummed me out since it was quite anticipated by me :(

...not at all? I don't see how this is that hard to comprehend but you are getting everything already. Ultimate editions are for when you make a collection of DLC and want to bundle it with the game. This isn't that, no matter how hard the narrative people are pushing want it to be.

I swear, it's Bayonetta 2 all over again. Let me guess, there will be videos of idiots laughing wickedly if this game sells poorly.

I would have preferred that too.

They haven't done it with Mario Kart 8 DLC packs nor HW.

So far I believe the only time they released a complete edition (i.e. DLC included) was with the New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Mario Luigi U disc, but it was exclusively available through a console bundle.

I'm in that thread too. Lots of fighting about the game and if it's a ripoff. controls, etc. Just all around a mess.

But it would have been even worse if this stuff was kept under wraps until launch. God, can you imagine the horror?

Yeah, this stuff needed to come to light either way. I was already cautious after hearing the voice chat stuff so seeing the other pieces fall with the way parties/friends works and this drip feed of content is not all that surprising.

Actually, did Smash even get the future content yet from the older direct, anyway? I recall it talking about tourneys and the miiverse stage, and that direct was 6 or 7 months ago.

Not that I know of, just the (paid) DLC that came out pretty quickly.

Yeah, someone in the amiibo line thread said the same thing. Very likely since the game was so rushed to even fill their extremely sparse line up.

Thanks for the response, and you're right. I guess I can buy Splatoon with my mind being at ease without worrying about an Ultimate/Game of The Year edition coming in 6+ months like other third party games. I still would gladly rebuy Mario Kart 8 if it included all of the FANTASTIC dlc :)

Pretty much. Except this content is free with purchase. They're not really gating anything behind DLC (except for maybe the amiibo costumes but we don't know yet for sure.)

I hope they give us an amiib9 free way to play the minigame, hate the idea of locking actual stuff like that behind those rare ass amiibo

In matchmaking games 5 maps might not seem like a lot since you're expected to rotate through all the maps and those type of games stress variety.

For games with server lists, 5 maps is fine if they are really damn good maps. (Jury's still out on this one of course.)

I never needed to more than 3 or 4 maps in Socom, Counter Strike, UT, Q3, Team Fortress 2, etc.

Does this game do server lists or matchmaking? Anyone know?

But any way you look at it, "5 maps, 1 mode" does make it seem light on content.

The game rotates 2 (possibly 3 later) maps per set of hours, and you queue up for them to play with either friends or randoms in random battles/ranked battles.

There are two modes.

I don't understand why they don't just treat amiibos as premium-priced dlc keys. free dlc with your amiibo but otherwise pay like half of that or less and unlock it from the eshop

probably some metrics that makes that crap or something

Actually the Splatoon amiibos weren't hard to get at all. They were available quite a few times for a few days.

Weren't hard to get, or won't be hard to get? Simply by speaking in past tense you're telling me what I assumed. These may have been comparatively easy to get compared to other amiibo, but will they be available on retail shelves for average consumers?

Just because you didn't have to log on in a 5 minute window when a best buy employee posts in /r/amiibo doesn't mean they're going to be available. Maybe they will be, but I don't see any available now. I want them, just not enough to put more effort than pulling the pack off the shelf when I buy the game.

As far as reviewing the game, it needs to be done on the day 1 content. No one should get a pass on releasing an incomplete game with promises of future content. Personally I'm okay with 5 maps as long as they're all GOOD and work in multiple game modes, but I know a lot of people won't be satisfied.

-edit- I missed that there's only one mode available at launch. This seems very rushed. I'll give the open beta event a shot, but I really don't see myself picking this up at launch anymore. It's a shame nintendo aren't going to let this game launch in the state it needs to be in. I hope the community is still strong by the time I pick it up.

They should review the content as it exists on release.

They probably will.

Splatoon will likely not review well.

I gave up on Amiibos the day that Ness was only available for like a few hours in the middle of a weekday. I hate Amiibos now, me and all 17 of my amiibos

Well considering it was only for preorders there's no way of telling how stocked the stores will be when they release along with the game (both on the 27th.)

My "hope" is that they'll have plenty this time to push a new IP. Then again Nintendo gonna Nintendo.

Seems likely that ranked battle and the second mode will be unlocked by day 2 or 3. I'll be missing the launch day and getting in late on Saturday night before I can play, wouldn't be surprised if enough people have reached level 10 at that point.

I personally expect the new modes to be available to reviewers. While the rest of us have to wait for them for a few weeks/months as the new maps also roll out.

Recently the press played both modes by review copies providing them with level 10 characters. Maybe the other modes are also ready for them but Nintendo isn't releasing them until everyone is level 20 like in Destiny

Anyhow reviewers should review what ever they get at launch.

Personally, it all comes down to fun factor - to me Splatoon still seems like a game I will get and enjoy. Gradual content release for the user base over the summer might be good.

Nintendo should hire someone to handle tournament organization as the release the new modes, maps and features over the summer.
I think there is a lot of options for a lot additional modes that could be created with the mechanics in the game, that's another thing Nintendo should continue to look into and find out what works.
Making a good online shooter is hard, especially when they are doing it for the first time - they need the right approach. So far I think I like what they are doing with Splatoon but it's only a few weeks until I see if I'm proven right.

in canada it's almost 80 bucks after taxes.

I literally laughed out loud at the thought of paying that much money for what they're offering at launch.

Do you read some if the previews? Splatoon will be a 90%+ game easily.

Is Splatoon the only game you've ever read previews for in your life? The vast majority are positive, optimistic, or glorified PR pieces; I can count on one hand the number of negative previews I've seen since I started following video games in the 90s. Assuming that Splatoon is going to easily score a 90+ on metacritic because some journos said nice things about it before release is foolish.
