How Stannis Baratheon (and Davos Seaworth) Made Me a Better Man

The men mostly joining Renly’s cause and not Stannis’ shows that the common people could give two shits about rules established. Renly aiming to take the throne is literally another form of right of conquest. Might makes right is how Robert took the throne, and Renly was aiming to repeat.

You assuming I think Stannis would have been a worse king is something you imagined. Renly is a pussy, he wouldn’t have been able to handle the task. His idea of ruling revolves around the fun bits, but he’d flop at difficult decisions. His rule would fail just as Robert’s did.
While this is correct and completely legitimate it still doesn't feel justified to use right of conquest just because you think the next in line is joyless and boring. In the case of a ruthless, crazy murderer ie. Aerys it seems more appropriate to take such extreme measures. Renly was given the opportunity by Stannis to work together and bend the knee to Stannis. It was made clear that turning the offer down was a treasonous act of war. Renly had every right to take the throne by conquest but his decisions had consequences that cost ultimately cost him his life.

Robert rebelling and taking the throne considering what happened with Lyanna being abducted and subsequent executions of Brandon and Rickard Stark have way more weight and merit. Renly doing it to leapfrog his older brother does not feel justified.
