How to get started in the stock market?

Yes I know the stock market just tumbled today, but hey that's ideal for getting in, is it not?

I've already got a large mutual fund set up (which I realize is also effectively stocks), but also have some play money that I'd like to try my own hand at stocks with.

I've done research on the interwebs, but it is all very confusing to me.

What's a good starting point? I looked at my bank's (USAA) trading options but the fees seem high from reviews I've done.

I found a couple dated threads here on GAF, but they're...dated...

Can any of you pros give me some advice, like who to go with, how to research on what to buy, etc? Anything to help me take the plunge would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Get the robinhood app and get everything setup on there.

Take a small amount of money, $50 tops, and buy some cheap stock that has high volatility and some with low volatility.

Use limit orders for everything. The goal is to buy low and sell high. Play around for a few weeks.

Now you have gotten started and should have a much better idea how it works. It should also give you a whole new set of questions to ask. I can answer one right now. No, don't trust Technical Analysis.

Just adding here that I prefer value investing. As for where to learn it you could try youtube maybe. I never really learned all the formulas myself enough to do it by hand, I just found a stock screener I liked that did some of the calculations for me. Once I got that set up, I came up with my own buy/hold/sell strategy and I stick to it religiously.

FYI
I actually pay for the screener I use.

Be in your early 20s and have access to 100k.

Lol

If you want to day trade just have a lot of time to put in daily if you are looking for quick turn around.
