howlongtobeat.com shut down?

Somebody tried to create an entry for "The Internet". Somebody put in the actual number of hours necessary. Created an Out of Bounds Exception.

They just tweeted that the site could be down for a couple hours, but it doesn't sound permanent.

Carry on.
I nearly had a heart attack lmao. Thank goodness. That site has been instrumental in helping me fight my backloggery.

It'll probably be back up. Seems like a host problem.

Why the owner continually makes the site harder and harder to navigate, I'll never know though. It's really an awful design as it is now.

Yeah it's pretty difficult to find the game I'm looking for sometimes when search doesn't work.

Was it really that useful? I remember people trying to skew the averages, and once usernames were introduced, people started posting ridiculously low times (even under "normal" playthroughs) as a way to brag or something. I didn't find it a very realistic measure, imo. Actually, looking at the medians worked okay, unless it was a game that didn't have many times posted.

I only used it early on though...maybe that issue was eventually resolved somehow?

Hey guys, I own the site. When my site gets hit heavy Netfirms suspends the account. It's a clustered service so when my site is getting hit hard it bogs down all the others I share with. I've recently paid them extra to support 3 times the database connections since the is my biggest issue but apparently it isn't enough.

Anyone know any good hosting services that manage the server for you? I don't want to have to focus on maintaining a server while also programming a site and managing a database. It's the main reason I've stuck with Netfirms.

I previously purchased a dedicated hosting service and found that maintaining the server myself was a lot of work. I decided to pay Netfirms extra with a "secret" plan that they have, only available to people who ask but apparently it wasn't enough.

I use this site often as well. It gives you a good measure of what you're getting into and gives you hope. It's also been pretty accurate for me so far.

Hey, don't have any advice in terms of hosting services, but I just want to say thank you for the site.

I love it. :)

Good, I use this site all the time.

I know nothing about web site hosting, but thanks for the site!

Does it just say how long it takes to beat a game?

I've never heard of it...seems useful.

On average, people can submit how long it takes to complete the main story, main story plus, etc. of a specific game and it averages out by the times that are submitted by the users. Very useful indeed and it is usually very accurate I find.

Unless I'm blind, even searching from the main screen on tablet is not possible. Stile, great site. Use it to plan my backlog, and judging when buying new titles. Sometimes short and sweet is all I want.

I hear Positive is pretty good. They host Rock Paper Shotgun, which is a good enough endorsement for me.

Just gotta say I love what you do Everdred.

It's been pretty bang on every game I've played so far. Must have been resolved.

Very cool!

Keep up the good work. Another user here.

I hope it returns soon. I planned on analyzing which game I wanted to play next. Love that site!

Thanks for everything you've done. Having it down makes me realize that I need to donate before I take it for granted.

Thanks for the site. I use it often.

Good to hear that this is just a minor setback.

The thing I like most about it is that it seems super accurate.

I just used it with God of War Ascension and it was spot on.

Have you looked into hosting your website on something like Azure or Amazon? I only have experience with Azure but it's nice not to have to worry about scaling up or down as needed. I dont know how much you are paying for this netfirms but you can use this Calculator to see how much it might cost you.

I use Dreamhost myself, use a dedicated VPN for about $80-100 a month. But for a heavily traffic'd site I'm not sure if it'll be cost efficient enough.

I've never heard of this site before. Is it like a compilation of completion times for different games?

I don't understand how that would be useful to so many people. Interesting, sure. But useful?

It's very useful, for instance I just recently looked up Ni No Kuni because as a working adult I only have so much time to dedicate to games.

Unfortunately Ni No Kuni had an absurd play time so I don't think I will be purchasing it.

It shows the shortest reported completion time (often speedruns), the longest and the average (median of all reported times). This is split up into Main Story (Required),
Main + Extras (Quests/Medals/Unlockables) and 100% Completion.

Super accurate and useful if you don't have much time. It helps planning the play sessions and seeing how long it is gonna take. Also useful to get through your backlog more efficiently or if you are a trophy hunter. Since the times are much more accurate than most reviews it also can be used to see if you even want to buy a game or not, cause many people prefer shorter/extremely long games. Also since the site has shortest and longest times you almost always find the time that suits your play-style too, another plus over reviews.

Since it is a database it is also much quicker to use than looking up reviews or asking someone.

they should add a feature to steam to allow people to vote on how long a game is. most upvoted times are grouped in a range or something or it just shows the most voted hours
