How's Z.O.E 2?

I've been hearing loads of good things about the game, and I've been thinking of getting it. I love anything KCEJ, and I thoroughly enjoyed the first. So why should I get this one?

Because it's Stylish Crazy Action ! ehr..no. I think it's a great game with strong points:

-Awesome Soundtrack.
-Best graphics this gen.
-Cool Gameplay (stylish hack & slash).
-Good Story.
-Dingo !

It's an amazing game. It's done the best job yet of capturing the scale and pathos of something like Macross or Gundam in game form. The game is beautiful, the action is fast, the levels are enormous, and story is compelling. On top of all of that, it has the best boss fight ever in a videogame.

In interests of full disclosure though, the "mid-range combat" feels a bit lacking when compared to something like Virtual On, but the "Zero Shift" teleporter you get halfway through the game remedies that nicely.

9/10

The Dynasty Warriors-type battle was awesome. By that, I mean combating 300-500 enemies in one huge area.

That was very epic and immersive...At least to me... I really felt the heat of the battle !

I love how that battle began. You were just sitting there and then
all of a sudden your radar basically turns completely red with enemies. I was like Holy sh!t!!!

Again, the
Compressed Space battle against Anubis
is the single best boss fight ever.

The entire time i was thinking
Jesus Christ, Jehuty is all f-ed up. This has to be a plot battle. I just need to get him down a little more, then i'll get away.

I sense of accomplishment when i beat him was incredible.

If another ZOE is ever developed, a two-player mode that's either split screen or online is a MUST. The single screen two-player battles in both ZOE and ZOE 2 just didn't work. Everything else but the multiplayer was near perfect though.

Action game of the generation.
What he said.

I've probably beating it five times or so. It's an excellent mech action game. It has that Hideo touch too.

If you can buy the PAL-version, it's Special Edition.

Fantastic game. But the PAL version is stupidly hard, and i can't get past one of the boss battles (the one where you have to
delete the AI Viola from Ardjet - according to the walkthroughs at gamefaqs, you have to grab her four times to completely delete the AI
. In the PAL version, it's more like double that, and i think there are other changes, too).

yeah, the PAL version comes with an "extreme" difficulty mode, but all of the boss battle and extra missions are also in the US release.

From the back cover:

Special Edition Features
This Special Edition ZOE The 2nd Runner includes new gameplay
sequences and polygon models, a new opening demo, more secret extras,
new 3D models and further improved graphics.

+Great Graphics AMONG the best ON PS2
+Cool Gameplay (stylish hack & slash).
+Good Story.
- the framerate is unsteady and pretty terrible throughout the game it makes parts of the game a nuisance to play rather than a pleasure
- the control scheme is cumbersome, anyone who complained about Fable's controls should have even more whining with ZOE2
- a proud member of the Games Overrated by GAF list
very good, but not nearly polished enough to be beyond that.

Fixed.

The stage where you take on the all the battle ships has to be one of my favorite moments this gen in any game. The music just made it even better.

Can you buy this game in canada? cause I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Yeah. I've seen sporadic stock at EBgames and Walmart, mostly because I don't think anybody actually tries to reorder the game. Amazon.ca even lists it as out of stock. :(

Unless you have an independent shop to hit up, ebay may be your best option.

WTF is Scoot smoking, by the way?

Quite honestly? Overrated. It has nice graphics, but brought down by the simple design of the settings. The controls are awkward and the framerate can annoy. It's mindless fun, though. Hopefully you won't pay too much for it. :P

Is the framerate some sort of PAL version comment? Kinda surprised anybody would bring up framerate on it. I would sooner volunteer Halo 2, GTA:SA or Metroid Prime 2 in that regard.

Are you kidding? Halo 2 has texture-pop in, but not gameplay slow down because of giant explosions and huge puffy (and admittedly awesome looking in ZOE2) clouds. Metroid Prime: Echoes runs great, too. I think you are putting ZOE2 in the wrong category there, but definitely in the right one with its PS2 bretheren GTA:SA.

The framerate slows down A LOT in the uberbattle you people like so much, enough to be annoying.

Weird. I just ran a side by side (Halo 2 and ZOE2) comparison, and ZOE2 won hands down. Just seemed a lot smoother.

MP2:E runs great...most of the time. But it's got some really weird places where the camera angle changes and the framerate just chokes to death for 3-5 seconds.

I really hated the first one, but never played the second (obviously.) Is it really that much better?

I still have that game, but haven't played it yet. I'll play it soon though. It's probably my #5 game on my backlog list. :(

Basically what they did is took ZOE and turned it into a pure action game. They removed the segments where you had to fly Jehuty to the next location to fight and instead there's a small cutscene break that leads into that next section and then you're dropped right into the next battle. You're also given a much greater arsenal of moves to fight with since you're going to be fighting waves and waves of enemies instead of just a few enemies at a time.

The multi-shot "swarm" attack makes me feel warm in my Macrossal areas. Also, 2nd Runner has the best homing missiles evar .

Don't forget that the boss fights rock too. There's a nice variety of them and some of those boss fights are memorable. Fighting Vic Viper from Gradius was a nice bonus too

yeah, but you have to
Listen to Leo whine about "GIVE ME BACK JEHUTY" the whole time during that fight

The fights against Inhert, Zakat, and the compressed-space battle against Anubis are all much better.

ZOE2 has the Ridge Racer vibe going in that you can sit back, pump up the volume, and mow through levels and enemies like butter, and it all feels like a smooth, smooth cruise. That's what I liked most about it.
