HP Stream 7 £50 @ Microsoft Store

For games from 10 years ago the tablets are really nice, just think that back then you were using a £150 graphics card to get the same results with maybe a little better resolution.

Just got mine! Half Life 2 at 600p and mostly high settings, havn't seen it dip below 40 with an average of about 60fps. Really impressive little device! Keeping games in 4:3 seems to be ideal for performance.

Edit: Here's Portal too

Are they just straight played? Not streamed? Pretty impressive if so.

I tried streaming from steam yesterday and that worked good too, although the tablet got a little hot.

Missed the delivery of mine this morning so have to wait for tomorrow.
That said, I'm also waiting for my SD card, case and controller mount as well and they probably wont be here until end of the week anyway.

The cpu's in these things will run hot and they are designed to hit close to 100c without a fan, though I would not reccomend changing anything to make it reach that limit.

I think by default these tablets scale down the cpu clock when they hit 65 or 70c, and then force shut down if they hit 80c, with my linx10 I can edit the bios on boot up and change all that stuff, enable and disable functions and all that to help control the heat and power.

In some cases it might be best to disable the speed step tech and disable the boost mode, the cpu will then stick to 1.33GHz without dropping as low as 0.48 and as high as 1.80.

Mine has turned up today as well! No e-mails from Microsoft apart from the order confirmation last week.

I'm at work so I haven't done much with it but I'm impressed how smooth the OS has been and general usage, it seems to be running far nicer than my old school notebook which is what it is due to replace :D

The test shall be once I hit the interwebs on it!

Can someone (who has received their Stream 7) confirm if it comes with a recovery CD or microSD card?
I've heard that the Signature edition doesn't come with one.

Thanks for posting these. I'm looking forward to testing out a few other older games with a DS4. I'm wondering if the more demanding Source games, like L4D, will run at similar speeds with sufficiently low settings.

Mine did not!

I can run Binding of Isaac Rebirth at a constant 60FPS so I am happy :) Testing Hotline Miami 2 after.

It doesn't - I believe there's a recovery partition of sorts, or a part of WIMboot or something (can't remember offhand).

There's a dedicated restore/recovery option in PC settings that handles the restore process. Really easy.

How do you play with touch controls? Or do you use a controller?

I don't have a DS4 only an xbox one pad, can you get USB to mini USB adapters?

Is it self contained like iOS or do you need to create a recovery disk/usb?
I always do a fresh install on my laptop so I'm not particularly familiar with Windows restore.

Edit: Found my answer. Windows 8's reset option was what I was looking for.

I was browsing the other thread and this intrigued me:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=153742493&postcount=404

You have to change IE user agent string to a mobile browser, there is no other way to make it behave like one. For that you have to change some reg entry or easier through group policy editor. Google it there are lots of guides around but after you do that everything will open in mobile mode, applies to desktop IE also, you can't separate them... I guess on 7" that's not bad though.

But looks like my google-fu is lacking since I can't find a guide to do this. Anyone care to point me in the right direction?

It's arrived! Not too sure where to start when it's done, Touch Mouse Pointer and messing about in the settings is first, but any recommendations are welcome.

Mine came today and aside from a couple of crashes when I was trying to do too much, it's a great bit of kit and a bargain. Hearthstone works fine too.

Well I'm posting this from mine... holey crap its as good as my note 4 for messing around on the internet. Screen is pretty nice and I hot half life 2 working earlier. It streams videos, it controls my Xbox and it runs full window! For 50 squid! I am super impressed

Steam is being a little dickhead and the downloads keep flicking from 1MB/s to just stopping for a bit. I think thats a Steam problem though.

I love the device though, really nice. I find the Metro IE to be a bit awkward to use but I think thats just my lack of familiarity with it.

Partner wasn't in yesterday and missed UPS!!! damn it all!

Can I ask what emulators are people using for this device in general? I don't want to make a new thread but was hoping to have Mega Drive and Saturn emulation but don't know what ones are the best and how they would run on the device.

Anyone have opinions on using this as a word processor mainly? Laptop is on the way out, and I won't be getting one for a little while at least. Anyone used word, or google docs? How's the typing?

Cheers, guys.

Well I only managed to play around with mine for an hour or so last night but both Project 64 and the Model 2 emulator ran at 60fps :D

Half Life 2 seemed to run pretty well too at around 40 fps, I haven't really messed with any graphics settings and what not as I'm waiting for my USB hub to be able to plug in a keyboard.

PS4 controller also worked great but I think the bluetooth may have been causing issues with the wireless as file sharing became super slow when the controller was hooked up.

Once I get the USB hub I think I'll have to try Windows 10 on it to see how that performs :D

If you are using the touchscreen I wouldn't suggest it as the screen would be far too small when using the keyboard. Typing on the device is fine though and the screen is very clear and readable so the act of word processing on the device is fine. I would suggest a physical keyboard though due to the very limited screen space when the touch keyboard is in use.

I've been playing around with mine for 24 hours now and I got to admit, I'm pretty impressed.
Though battery life can go rather quickly if you are downloading and installing stuff all the time (no real surprise.)

You will be better off with a laptop.
This will be good if you need to review/read some existing documents on the go, or making some small light edits.

For actual heavy word use, It would be slower (assuming you are using the touch keyboard).
You could connect a physical keyboard to it, however it would still be better if you got a small cheap netbook.

Cheers, I'll have a look around for some cheap Chromebooks instead then.

I used the $25 US credit to buy the pay emulators on the win 8 store since they have proper touch controls and I don't want to drag a controller with me everywhere I go. There are some free ones on there... but they seem to be updated far less often and have issues with saving, etc.

They work really well and even suspend the game when the emulator shuts down, so I can see exactly where I was on the metro screen and one click jump right back in (great since I'm playing Chrono trigger currently).

Fucking hell UPS is a shambles if they can't deliver on the first attempt.

They tried to deliver my HP Stream yesterday, but I wasn't expecting it so I'd gone shopping, meaning I had a card through my letterbox saying that they'd try again the next business day (ie today). Since they hadn't delivered it today so far, despite being well past the time they tried yesterday, I decided to check the online tracking info. That says that the parcel was going to be taken to a collection point nearby since I wasn't in. Ok, fair enough. So I go round to the collection point to pick it up, and they haven't got it.
Get home, call UPS customer service (they really don't want you getting through to a person) to find out what the hell is going on. Turns out it's actually a combination of the two. They will delivery it to a collection point, but not until the next working day. What the fuck? If you're going to take it to a collection point after one failed delivery, why not take it straight there? Or at least take them there at the end of the day? Why wait until the next working day to take it to the collection point? Couldn't even say what time it would be dropped off there, just "By the end of the working day".

I want my tablet damnit!

Steam - that old stinky, dingy sack of cum - kept cutting out whilst downloading Civ last night. It finally finished around midnight and then just... restarted again. From 0MB. So I left it on all day at home. Hopefully when I get home a) my house won't have burnt down and b) it'll have finally finished download.

I received my HP Stream 7 today and I'm quite impressed with it, so far.
I can, however, confirm constant static noise via the headphone jack.

Fuckers claimed I wasn't in, there were 3 people in the house at the time. Fucking idiots.

Despite being told by UPS customer services that the tablet was going to be taken to a local collection point by the end of the day, the delivery guy just turned up.

This really is Yodel levels of "we don't know what's going on"

Did you update your wireless drivers? I recall reading a lot of people had connection issues until they did.

I'm not sure that's it, I had the internet the whole time. I could browse GAF etc find, but when I went back to it, I'd see that it hadn't been downloading anything for the last ten minutes. If I paused and resumed it always started back up, or if I left it it would for a bit. I think it was a Steam problem - thus my unsympathetic labelling of it.

FML trust Virgin Media to go.tits up when I get my new toy. No internet in my area.

not just me then - you in the slough area or did they have a big outage all over?

If you can find a really cheap copy of pokemon teaches typing, that'd give you a bluetooth keyboard and a little stand which will support the tablet. Think I got mine for about £6 from amazon.

Bluetooth mouse would be handy too.

Damn, I lost the stand that came with my copy! It would of been perfect.

.

South Hampshire. Apparently it was all over the country.

So I was thinking about the apps I miss out on my Win Phone. Can anyone recommend a good Android emulator that'll work on this?

Slough's like those cell towers that are hidden in sculptures or lamp posts but for the internet - the whole town is just a western-style matte painting for data centers. I imagine if there was a problem there, it'd have pretty wide-reaching consequences.

none.

Well what I should say is that you can get them to boot but the performance or compatability is poor, for example all the lite games I have tried did not run and the twitch app plays sound but no video for streams.

I came home to find one of those cards too, then shortly after I received an email informing me that it had been dispatched.
Oh well at least I got it today. The last time they took it to a collection point and when I went there the next day it was till nowhere to be found, luckily it wast there the day after that.

Anyway once I'd downloaded the updates the tablet seems pretty good for the price, Papers Please work well with it as it supports touch controls.

I bought this about a month ago. Good thing is you get a year of Office 365 and a $25 Microsoft App Store/XBOX Live gift card (at least in the US).

The tablet itself works relatively well as long as you know what you are getting. The 1GB ram really kills its performance on most things, but as a light-use tablet it works great.

For the $25 gift card. On the stream 7, use the desktop version of IE, there are instructions on the website that you will need to change security settings in order to validate that you have a hp stream 7.

Going from memory, visit http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/HPStream/, click sign in. You will then need to go to (under IE) settings > security, add microsoft.com as a trusted website. After, click custom level and enable "initialize and script activex controls not marked as safe for scripting" under activex controls After that, check the checkbox for enable protected mode. After, click verify, a dialog box should show up on the bottom of your screen asking if you want to run the activex control, just click yes and you should be on your way.

I would guess this works in the UK but someone please check.

I just tried this and can confirm it doesn't work in UK. I could create a US account I suppose, or temporarily change mine to US.

none.

Ah that's a shame...

I've spent almost as much on a case, 64GB mSDXC, on the go USB adaptor and a screen protector than I did on the actual device.

It's an OK tablet. Nice screen, horrendous speaker (and bad crosstalk over headphones), but decent for £50. I'll use it when I need a Windows program instead of my iPhone, and for Steam home streaming from my PC with a 970.

This tablet is amazing. For the price you can't go wrong. An amazing emulating machine playing mega drive games and Saturn games no problem. Need to get a case but it is superb for the price. Will look in to steam next but happy with my purchase

What emulators are you and everybody else using? Does it have touch controls?

I like it but searching for stuff on the windows store is a pain in the arse because it sometime's will not hit enter.
