Hells yeah. I'm so down for this. Like others have said, Hulu Plus + Nellfix + ESPN3 = me trimming my Comcast "Triple Play" down to just broadband access.

I can't wait for Hulu Plus to be widely available and ready to watch on my PS3!

How? 10 bucks a month is more than double 50 bucks a year... Surely you don't mean make it + exclusive.

No way should it be exclusive. I just think that if they're going to offer all of these subscription-based services that they should find some way to snowball some of it together. Again I'm certainly no businessman, but how much shit can they try to get you to pay for per month when it becomes too much?

As a Netflix subscriber there is almost nothing appealing about Hulu Plus:

Current season TV: Watch on free Hulu
Old TV: Stream on Netflix when able (X-Files), rent from Netflix when unable.
Movies: Stream on Netflix when able (my last five movie streams: Surrogates, In the Line of Fire, Darkness Falls, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Jerk), or rent if it's not on streaming.

That's basically everything.

Netflix + ESPN3 on Xbox = me canceling my cable TV. Hulu Plus just doesn't find a home in this value chain.
They only have the last 4 or 5 episodes of current shows, and I can't watch on my TV or portable devices. I don't watch tv that way. By the time I decide to catch up on a show, the first few episodes of the season are gone. Hulu plus(at least the way its being described) works with my viewing habits.

Again, I'm a rabid Netflix user, I just don't understand why you would make this an either or debate. It's a "use both for world domination" conversation, IMO.

why is it priced the same as netflix?!?

Does it have more TV shows than Netflix? Honestly streaming Netflix movies are just garbage, it's only useful for me for catching up on TV shows. If this has more TV content then I'm there day 1.

Also I hope this is an app and not a disc. I will never use a disc

After rummaging through both current Hulu and Netflix, it seems like Netflix still has more (good) TV shows. Even available for instant watch.

'Bout to blow through Rocko's Modern Life today.

Good thing I got

I love the idea of being able to abandon my cable TV subscription, but I love BBC America and PBS far too much. Also, sports.
BBC America shows are on Netflix usually. PBS is Free to Air. Sports is free with ESPN3 is your ISP supports it.

it's one 30 second commercial.

I'm pretty sure hulu has far more television options than Netflix, and Hulu allows for unlimited streaming

???

Netflix allows for unlimited streaming too. Always has. For $9 a month in fact! $1 less than Hulu. (plus remember you can rent any physical DVD you want making a 1:1 price comparison silly. Neither service streams Sopranos for instance, but you can rent the entire run from Netflix and not have to buy the box sets).

As for TV, on Netflix I watched or am watching:

- All seasons of LOST
- All seasons of Weeds
- All seasons of X-Files
- All the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes runs
- All 30 Rock
- All Red Dwarf
- Probabyl streamed ~100 movies (District 9, Back to the Future 1-3, Moon, etc etc etc).

People, you have been doing that for YEARS. Cable/satellite.
Haven't had cable for years.

Let this shit crash and burn, and when someone gets it right in a few years (ad free) I'll jump in.

I dunno, I really wanted to like this and sitll may even get it, but it's certainly not as appealing (feature wise) as I thought it would be.. oh and smh at inverted PS3 pic. :lol

Hulu Plus is a US only service. Unfortunately, we do not have international streaming rights at this time. If you are outside the US and can not view videos from the free Hulu.com site, please do not sign-up for Hulu Plus.

FUCK YOU, HULU! FUCK YOU UP IN THE ASS!

Who cares. MUBI is all I need. And that's free if you allow ads as far as I know.

Hulu's selection is the worst. I often wonder why some of GAF is so hard for this service. Netflix has more, and we've all read about how people shit on Netflix's streaming selection.

This is not something they can snowball together because Hulu is not in other countries. So they likely wont include as part of + anything they can't have accessible almost everywhere.

As long as it does not require PSN+ then Hulu+ or Netflix or whatever else paid system is fine.

I would not want to increase the price of PSN+ by adding Hulu+ because I already have cable and can Tivo all those shows. Hulu+ is not interesting to me so I would not want to be forced to pay for it in a PSN+ subscription.

They can offer many separate paid services and I think they should. That way we can pick and choose whichever we want to have or not have. I may want to pay for Netflix and Pandora and Rhapsody but not for Hulu or Last.fm. Bundling everything into one giant package would be counter productive.

5 episodes is 5 weeks, though.

What I typically do with shows is forget about them for weeks at a time, and then catch up all at once. So I'll sit down some evening and watch the last month's worth of American dad or The Office or Castle via Hulu. Free hulu keeping the 5 latest episodes is plenty.

Re: portable devices - that's at least some real value Hulu Plus is bringing to the table. I can see that being nice. I personally only watch TV... on my TV. So that's a non-starter for me.

Both services serve different purposes. For older shows and content, Netflix is your best bet. For current seasons and shows, Hulu fits the bill.

I'll never pay for this. I'd be willing to use a free one that's heavily add supported, or I'll use a free one that verifies I pay for cable. But I have a dvr and I pay for cable, this isn't giving me anything new.

My Dish Network contract expires in August. If this is good enough, I will absolutely cancel television and just go with this + netflix. I might still pick up an HD antenna so that I can watch NFL games though.

I might build an htpc for my fiancee's office since we currently don't have any game consoles in there, but in just a year of not having Dish anymore I'd easily make my money back.

Edit: Also, for all you people thinking ESPN3 is going to replace your cable subscription, in my experience, EPSN3 only provides coverage if it's not on a major network. So the first two days of the US open were on ESPN3, but once it moved to one of the broadcast networks (I don't remember who carried it), ESPN3 no longer had it.

And of course, NFL games will never be on ESPN3.

So how much money did Sony pay and how ghetto is the MS version going to be?

Probably as ghetto as PS3 Netflix which is to say, not at all?

I'm mostly psyched to have this on my iPad. 360 is just a bonus.

The problem is that free Hulu is almost too good. You're basically paying $10 to access a full season instead of the previous 5 eps, plus the ability to stream on many portable devices, which is probably not useful for a bug chunk of consumers.

So if you watch a TV show more frequently than once every 5 weeks... use free Hulu.

I have a Mac-mini just for streaming shows and movies to our big TV. Its worth it if you have a large library of content.

Yeah, unfortunately those good (free) times with the PS3 are long past.

Yep. And at Hulu's hands. They specifically eliminated the PS3's browser as allowed. Maybe with + coming they will offer a free version that only gives you most recent 1-2 episodes of stuff.

True. I was just posting in argument about Hulu vs. Netflix.

I wonder if the iPad app will support video out?

Sure. True enough. I didn't really read that it wouldn't be in other countries until after my post so yeah, that sort of puts a nail in it.

Its gold for xbox live per major nelson... not surprising though. What is surprising is they are hinting at the reason its coming later than the july launch is they want to create a "customized experience". You would think they would have been working on it before now but I have a feeling this is all about kinect and wanting to launch with full kinect compatibility.

Hulu Plus coming to Xbox 360

We are happy to announce that Hulu will be coming to Xbox LIVE as part of their Hulu Plus experience. In the announcement today, Hulu announced a preview of their Plus service, along with a series of partners of which Xbox LIVE is one of them. We’re working hard on creating customized experience for Xbox LIVE members, which means that Hulu Plus will be coming to Xbox 360 in early 2011. We are taking the time to ensure that the Hulu Plus experience for Xbox 360 is the best on TV, and like our other entertainment experiences, it will not be a port, but rather a custom experience that leverages the Xbox LIVE community features.

Hulu Plus will be available for US Xbox LIVE Gold Members only.

Okay it's functional but it's still a little hood.

EDIT: also excited for iPad.

Well I am definitely thinking about it.. But like I said before, add TNT and AMC to this and I'm in. They need to get more networks on this and it'll become a no-brainer.

You're really underestimating the draw of being able to use non-PC devices. Netflix wouldn't be anywhere near as popular without Roku/console/BluRay player support.

It's a start, but right now Netflix > this deal. I don't really care for network TV. I think most people want ESPN, HBO options.

PS3 Netflix is pretty ugly compared to the 360 one. And it apparently loads slower than the Wii one according to a benchmark I saw, although that might have been fixed.

Well besides looks, it's a completely separate experience much like most of the apps developed for the XMB. That's what I mean by ghetto. Get the menus and UI to use the look and design of XMB. Also tell me what people are watching.

The PS3 version is the Blu ray version installed in Blu-Ray players, Roku, and TV's. Its slow, cumbersome, and outdated compared to the 360 or Wii.

What devices is Hulu Plus going to be on that Netflix isn't on?

These two services stack up feature-wise, so it boils down to

- Streaming Library
- Value Adds

In terms of library they are (IMO) separate but equal. Netflix has movie movies, Hulu more TV. The TV Netflix does have is higher quality though, thanks to the Showtime stuff.

In terms of added value, I can't believe people gloss over the fact that with netflix, for the same price as Hulu ($1 less actually), you can rent a physical copy of pretty much anything ever released.
