Humble Games Reportedly Collapsed - Entire Team Laid Off (Linked-in)

Humble Pie anyone?

Thoughts and prayers, I've been there myself. Grab a drink, go for a walk, and then hit the streets with your resume.

Ok, I'm not a PC gamer (don't call the overlords) but I remember them publishing Slay the Spire and World of Goo. Such a pity.

Is this just their game development team? What about the publisher side of the business?

Curious what this means for upcoming games they were publishing like Wizard of Legend 2.

Always seemed like an overreach to me. I guess it makes sense to make your own content to pad out the bundles and make some money, but being tied to IGN can't be good for any business. Nobody gives a shit about these old internet outlets anymore. Their output in 2024 is just boring podcasts, reposting trailers on YouTube, and contributing to metascores.

Geez, they've been doing some great work in the indie scene for the past several years. Just over the last year or so I've bought 4-5 games published by them (Signalis, Prodeus, Forager, Unpacking and probably more).

News flash: Failing conglomerates continue to be run by clueless morons. This is the least surprising outcome from a company that can't even operate their core business competently.

I find the whole concept of an indie publisher to be a bit odd though. I rarely see a lot in terms of genuine marketing for small indie games. I know discoverability is a huge issue, but they kind of seem like a pointless middleman for games this small. Even Devolver is acting like they're barely making it sometimes lately. Annapurna is crushing it though.

I guess you weren't kidding BennyBlanco BennyBlanco

Humble Games is their publishing business, unrelated to Humble Bundle other than featuring the games and their Humble Vault thing.

99% of indie devs have zero clue on how to market their games so these indie publishing labels are very much needed imo.

Yeah, that's probably true. I just have honestly never seen any marketing. But some of these games are so small maybe they just need help getting shit on the stores, having contacts, etc. I guess I could see it.

Besides that, they usually also assist with getting the game localized (this is especially important for Japanese indie devs so they can access Western markets). They might also fund or assist with ports to other platforms, since most indies only launch on PC, either via Steam or itch.io.

That is a shame. They published some cool indie games.
Just noticed I have a few of their games on my Steam account, such as Monaco, Carto and Prodeus.

Humble Bundle was great for such a long time. Then IGN took over and the bundles started to suck. Pay X amount to get vouchers to then still buy a game? Gtfo.

The Ghost of Song dev who had their game published by Humble Games had only positive things to say about them.

As a side note, they were also one of the few indie publishers that were still doing retail physical releases instead of relying on companies like LRG, iam8bit, etc.

ZIff Davis claiming it's "restructuring", while former emplyees are saying everyone was laid off.

Gaming/publishing section gone. I wonder if the store/bundle section will see some cuts? Maybe it is time to claim all those keys...

Why would someone who has been laid off go on X to moan about the higher ups all being greedy, vicious bastards and then tout for a job?

It will always make it seem like they were hard work and sow doubt in employers' minds.

What's the stuff about being seen btw - are some of these devs translucent now?
