Hurricane Milton - Stay safe Floridians

This hurricane looks insane, apparently biggest for 100 years.

Stay safe Florida GAF!

The 8th most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic

Also the first major hurricane which will likely hit Tampa Bay since 1921

In a general sense, it is unprecedented that a hurricane would form in the Gulf of Mexico and travel west to east across Florida, this is why Tampa Bay hasn't been hit by a big hurricane in over a century. Because of the trade winds, hurricanes generally travel east to west from the Atlantic to Florida, or south to north past Florida to hit the other Southern states like Helene just 2 weeks ago

Is it still Cat 5? If so, if you haven't evacuated, good luck and hopefully it doesn't hit you.

PS. What was Michael Jackson's favorite holiday? Going to Tampa with the kids.

I'm in the UK but have friends who live directly in the path of this beast, they're currently evacuating with the expectation that they'll have nothing to return to. They have a young child and pets so logistically, a total nightmare for them.

Fascinating and terrifying all at once.

According to the UK media, it's been downgraded to a Cat 4.

But still, stay safe those who live in Florida.

Good thing I moved out. My nieces evacuated to Georgia, and I've been keeping up with my old coworkers on this. The traffic out of Tampa is nuts

Im on the southeast coast outside of Lauderdale so we're just gonna get some hellish rain and winds, but everyone around here is still in panic mode. Working remote for the rest of the week.

Where would people go? Family and Friends out of state?

Does the state of Florida or the Federal Gov provide alternative accomdation in safe areas?

We appreciate the concern and best wishes! Been down in SWFL for 20+ years & been through a few strong ones but after Ian hit us direct (Fort Myers) we're still on the mend from that...add Helene's little Hawk Tuah + now Milton coming ~ well things are going to be interesting. Prepped and ready as we can be!

Family or friends, yeah. I believe the only accommodation will be after the storm within Florida. Then they'll know the damage to figure it out. I think I heard they have evacuation zones for people to stay, but don't quote me on it

The Main problem is the rain...so Even cat 3-2 Will flood a Lot of places , hope all people on low land evacuated.

I lived in Southeast TX most of my life, went through Katrina, we didn't even get the worse of it and it was still a horrible experience, I can't imagine being directly impacted by a hurricane of this caliber.

Hell nooooo, dealing with this stuff is just the price you pay for living in Florida!

To get federal funds for living/travel expenses you'd have to be a certain class of non-citizen we can't really address here :p

The storm surge along the coast as well. The wind pushing a 12+ foot high wall of water ashore is going to do tons of damage.

I wonder how much building codes are gonna have to change if this becomes a semi-regular thing. CAN you feasibly build cat 5 resistant structures?

Maybe we will see mass migrations of southerners to detroit, fleeing hurricanes. Seems like a good business opportunity for some yankee states to pave the way with good legislation and low taxes.

My dad is in central Florida, but he did not want to come up north some for safety.

Can't they build a basement instead?

Godspeed, Floridians. Stay safe. I can't even imagine the dread and terror knowing this monster is slowly approaching your home.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

office space i would set the place on fire too if i didnt get my cake GIF by Maudit

I’m about an hour south of Tampa, but I’m a few miles inland and not near any rivers/floodplains so I should be good.
The coastal areas are completely fucked, Longboat Key and Anna Maria were still bulldozing sand out from the Helene flooding.
Gonna go to my uncle’s place with my mom and the kids. He’s got a brand new house with impact glass and all that fancy shit.

This meteorologist going viral for getting emotional about how bad this thing is and why, shows what a nightmare scale this hurricane is at. If you’re in the path, evacuate.

Sanity prevailed at work and they decided to officially close on Thursday.
The nukes could be flying and the restaurant biz would be like “you’re still coming in right?”

I’m on the outskirts of Tampa, no mandatory evacuation for my zone. This one’s got us a little concerned, good luck everyone, please.

Really hope it's ends being nothing or a small tropical storm by the time it lands.

Did not know Florida has little high áreas

My mom has seen 78 years of storms locally and this is the first time I’ve seen her visibly anxious. That’s the main reason I’m staying with her at her brother’s place, I want to put her at ease as much as I can.

Was busy so day making sure everything outside was taken care of and setting up the generator and bought around 50 gallons of gas since we can run the entire house of it. Yesterday bought whatever supplies we needed, thankfully it was just for since we always keep a big stack of bottle water packages and other supplies. Tomorrow have to put the boards on the windows and we'll be done.

Thankfully we'll be safe and not have to worry about anything besides probably no internet lol. Live like 20 minutes from Orlando and the forecast showing we are going to get pretty hard and a ridiculous amount of rain which isn't a problem for us.

The dogs won't be happy lol
