It's all fun and games now, but wait til that dog's head splits and he has weird ass tentacles coming out all everywhere.

I know some dogs come to "like" their kennel, but I never understood my friends who get a dog, then put it in a kennel whenever they leave. It's like...it's an animal, not a robot that you only get out when you want to play with it.

That video was cute though.

Yea I don't like trapping animals of any kind. I understand that some dogs are too reckless while owners are away and may mess up the house though.

don't like kennels, maybe for a short time 1-2 hours shopping trips but man if your gone all day working that seems rough.

From what I remember reading about them, aren't Husky's super smart, have a shit ton of energy, and very very headstrong?? I'll have to look it up again.

In any case, this video is hilarious, LOL

Edit: Oh god. That "the fuck is this bullshit" stare at 3 seconds is AMAZING!

You have to be careful not to project how you'd feel about something onto a dog. Treating a dog like it's a little human can inadvertently create an environment where it feels more stress, rather than less.

We don't personally keep our (2) dogs in kennels while we're at work, but one of them we do keep in her kennel while we're asleep (and she probably spends most of her day in it by choice, with the door open). There's a time and place for it. Depending on the dog's temperament and the environment, they may feel less stressed inside their kennel than left alone outside of it.

Crate/kennel training is important for most dogs in general, if only for when you travel with them. It creates a familiar, comfortable environment for them regardless of the situation.

I only used a kennel with my dog when we first got him, so he wouldn't wander around the house and pee at night. But that only lasted a couple of weeks and we've been spooning ever since.

I have a crate for my dog, but I don't put him in there anymore. He's 4 years old now. But he loves it so much he goes in there by himself to ly dow/sleep. Crate training is important for puppies. It goes hand in hand with housebreaking.

Kennels are awful! I agree with him!

You all are projecting your human thoughts and emotions onto dogs. Unlike humans, a dog has no issue with sleeping in a kennel while the master is out. They are den animals. They would be sleeping in a single position for the majority of time you are out with or without a kennel. A kennel helps a dog feel safe and secure and comfy. A kennel helps contain small puppies and teach good house manners. Kennels are great.

That actually looks like a super nice kennel.

Dogs are funny. They know when you're not really insisting and they can be a bit petulant.

And - the others are right about 'projecting'.. dogs are den animals, they like to have that sort of small space with something over their heads. We kind of fucked up our crate training with our dog – he never liked it – but when he's uncomfortable now he always tries to get under something, like the kitchen table, or my legs.

It's for it's safety and so it doesn't potentially fuck up your room/house. Dogs like having dens so if they like it, they think of it as that. It's hard to understand if you haven't had to raise your own puppy.

I have raised and lived with puppies and adult dogs. I suppose I may be thinking incorrectly. I always keep my pet's food bowl full too. When they know that food is there whenever they want it, they don't scarf down everything in sight. I have friends who feed their giant dog twice a day and he opens cabinets and eats anything he can find when they're not looking; he would be too conditioned to the scarcity of food to be able to deal with an always full bowl at this point.

But obviously every dog is different. I try not to judge too harshly, it just doesn't seem ideal to me. At the same time, I have seen dogs who really like their kennels, and will go to it when it's open just to chill.

Exactly. Very good post. Working at our vet and then in a a couple canine study programs has been eye opening in this particular area.

Agreed here too. One thing though is that some breeds have disorders that cause them to eat everything all the time. We have sadly got that gene in one of our dogs. He fucking eats, lent, rocks, plants, bolts, anything small and he happens to be smart as well so it can get very scary. A friend recently left out plastic RC car connectors on my table and somehow he got to them and fucking ate them all. So you have to decide if eating himself to death is better than figuring something else out. Very stressful problem too have but I love the little(height) dog.

I left my dog out of his kennel once, Lil bastard tore apart my Scott pilgrim volumes :(
But since then he's improved dramatically and can be left alone without wrecking/eating everything.

If we leave our dog out and leave the house, first she will watch us leave from the window and then she'll go in her crate and lay down. She likes it

For their own safety. Quite a few dogs will actually get anxious if left to roam the house, and kenneling up will make them feel safe and calm until you get back.

Proper kenneling is giving the dog a safe place to be and a safe place to retreat to, a space of their own. Kenneling should NEVER be used as punishment.

I didn't find them super smart, but loyal and headstrong for sure. Shit ton of energy? Oh hell ya! They're a working dog and need a lot of exercise. That has to be the biggest consideration for ownership. You need to provide them plenty of exercise.

I have a kennel for my dog, but we rarely use it. If I have delivery people coming in or something like that, he gets put in it. He actually will go in lay in it from time to time without my command. During the day, my dog roams the house unattended and since he got out of his puppy stages, he has been fine. It's just when someone comes in the door, he gets so excited that it is better he stay in the kennel until he calms down.

I am thinking of getting a 2nd dog, but I don't know if I want to go through the house training again.

This is why my parents do it. They have this awesome dog that goes completely insane whenever the leave the house, with destructive consequences

My dog broke his leg while he was a puppy so he spent a good 6 months in a kennel. Afterward we put it away and he seemed fine while we were home. Unfortunately whenever I got back from work I'd find wrecked DVDs, letters or shoes. Once we put those where he couldn't reach them he started pissing on the bed and tearing up the sheets.
I finally brought the kennel back out and he immediately ran into it. Since then we've had no troubles, I feel bad for taking away his safe place now.

My pups are awesome. Say "bed" and they run right in there. When they're not being rambunctious knuckleheads, they often sleep in the kennel of their own volition with the door open. At night, they put themselves to bed when they're done fucking around for the day.

I had to fly them overseas and they stayed in their kennel. Didn't make a bit of fuss at either airport (they wagged a lot) because the kennel was their safe place, not a place to go when they've done something "wrong"
