Housemarque always was a niche studio, they never made games that sold 20 mil copies like fromsoft, making niche games for hardcores was always their purpose.
I mean, I don't think anyone else wouldn't want From Software to keep making their 20M-seller Souls games, but if they can have a separate team making other stuff and it goes just fine, why not? Guerrilla just released a Lego game with a budget of like $10M, it's okay.

Pros: From's games would no longer be complete trash technically. I mean the only one that's great technically is the Demon's Souls remake by BluePoint.

At least Sony isn't closing down studios with no logical reason after the studio made the most sucessful and innovative games the platform has seen in a while.

No, Sony is closing down studios that they encouraged to do the most egregious DEI initiative GAAS push.

All of their games are DEI hell in the last 5 years. Even Astro Bot pushes Aloy as the most important sony mascot today.

Plus, I do not know what you are talking about? lol

There’s no benefit or need for it to happen. Sony moneyhats games all of the time, so what need is there for them to own From? Just because you’re a cheerleader for their plastic box?

The more companies being bought up, the worse.

PRO: Sony has done a not-terrible job of adapting its IP to film and television, and From games are screaming for adaptations.

I don’t mind acquisitions mostly, it’s the nature of business. Yet some devs like FEOM SOFTWARE, should always remain independent. They are geniuses, they know how to make the best games. I hope if Sony does acquire them even by proxy, all Sony should ever do is fund FROM.and more importantly STAY THE FUGG OUT OF THEOR WAY.

Last thing we need is Neil Druckman and his radical liberal Marxist views ruining on e if the best devs on the planet.

For Sony only Pro’s, depending on price.

1.) It would create a group of Japanese developers for Sony to use. Which I think they now realize they need.

2.) It would create at minimum 3-4 more 1st party titles a generation. Likely more. Acquire could likely make 2 Octopath type games a gen, and maybe a smaller title as well. So it would allow Sony to try and recapture some of that JRPG magic.

3.) Elden Ring or whatever From Software creates next could become Sony’s BIG IP going forward. Likely bigger than Naughty Dog IP. Maybe Druckman would try something different if this comes to pass. Maybe they try their own Mass Effect or Skyrim as rumored before.

4.) If it goes well, and it seems it likely would. It would may bolster Sony’s ambition to acquire more studios and reshape its first party development teams.

5.) Gives Sony more IP’s to develop into other media properties as well as games.

CON’S:

1.) How much is Sony paying?

2.) Everyone else it further dilutes game development and creates a “EITHER / OR “ Scenario. For many families going forward likely picking only ONE CONSOLE to own. Due to economy/price/tariffs/ increased cost of goods/housing/food/healthcare, etc. One console ownership is likely for many if not MOST consumers on a global scale.

3.) Puts pressure on Nintendo / MS to acquire more. Especially Nintendo, even though it may only be smaller acquisitions for ports/remakes or additional resources for existing teams to continue to make a couple of games a gen.

4.) How will MS respond, if at all. Are their hands tied due to Xbox failures, or will they go “all in” on another whale? Especially if the “friendship” with Nintendo is growing, and if the rumor of many games coming to Switch 2 is true.

One thing seems for certain though. Square has elected to remain independent, and is not interested in a Sony acquisition.

It would be interesting to see if Sony would consider selling Bungie at a loss. Say, less than $1B.

Even though it appears Bungie is a mess, it still seems like a good idea for MS, Apple or even Nintendo to acquire them. If the price is cheap enough.

No, Herman has run great studios into the ground. I dont want this moron anywhere near From. He will probably have them make a Horizon souls game.

Also, consolidation is bad for the industry. Arrogant sony is back. Elden Ring is one of the few good third party games left. We cant let Sony have them on principle.

Would be a smart move by Sony. Probably be the end of their PC strategy also which hasn’t delivered as they hoped.

This is how you get Dark Souls online GAAS and never get another from game again.

That said, no acquisition short of Nintendo would have a bigger impact.

Pros: Better tech support from Sony support studios ; Sony is known for giving creative freedom to they own studios so FromSoft is not gonna change the way they make games.

Cons: Possibility of some important figures leaving FromSoft if they dont like the new bosses; FromSoft games available to less ppl day 1.

Pros - We'll have the hardest Souls game yet. It requires a Sony console which is pretty damn hard for some. Diabolical even.

Cons - Only for $60k income households.

The Sony rot will infest From Software if this happens. I don't even like From Software, but I have good friends who adore those games. Hopefully this doesn't happen for their sakes.

I *really* don't want it to happen

Plausible pros:
1. Increased technical performance support for future FROM games

2. Increased (and consistent) funding for development, marketing, etc

3. Operational stability means any potential experimental games would more likely be approved

4. Creative interference+ (cinematic presentation support, accessibility/ui support, etc)

5. Spinoff media ventures (more adaptations (even though elden ring adaptations are already in talks), toys)

6. Job security (assuming no concord-level failures, most FROM developers would be more secure in their jobs)
Really nothing is a Pro here, From Software doesn't need Sony for making better games because Sony is inferior (yes, it is) and even in job security they can't even stand on their own, yet From can easily... If From Software doesn't make better games technically is because they don't need it, I rather keep them focusing on art and leave technical improvements as a side thing... Not to mention that their release pipeline is just WAY better than PS and it's because they focus on what matters.

Srsly there's no benefit for them to be acquired by Sony, ZERO benefits compared.

I don't think so.

The rot is Western. I think Japan does a good job of avoiding most of the nonsense.

Sony aren't going to interfere. I also expect it to carry on and release multiplatform. The bonus would be that it might improve the technical aspects of Souls games.

Western rot has been invading Japanese developers for a while now, especially within localizations. I expect the worst.

All I'm gonna say is: Acquisitions are never in the consumers interest, but the salt they generate can definitely be.

It's been a truly remarkable day.

I don't see a problem with it. If they do anything to piss Miyazaki off he will just leave and start a new studio. From Software is nothing without him.

Pros - potentially better optimization and access to better engines/renderers via xDev. Imagine Elden Ring with Demon's Souls or even Death Stranding level of graphics.

Cons - More industry consolidation.
Imagine the development cycle taking 8+ more years...

From what I can tell, every major acquisition has absolutely horrible consequences. I'm firmly in camp anti acquisition, be it this one or the major ones that have happened in the past.

I only play on PC but don't care enough to be pcmr.

If they decide to close this studio, God forbid, then no, it's an unethical move from Sony to decide the fate of their studios.

I don't know about anyone else, but I sure as hell do not want Sony to turn From Soft into a blue haired activist dev group like Bungie. No thank you.

I thought this was a silly thought experiment at first not actually close to happening. Fuck no, i don't want sony to own either from soft or kadokawa.

Possible pro - they make fromsoft make bloodborne 2

Possible con - Miyazaki doesn’t want to, so quits in protest

Honestly I don’t think anything would really change how from releases games. PC and Xbox crowd would be too loud after the wild success of Elden ring.

I’d think if this went through prior to Elden ring they could have made it 1st party Sony exclusive.

Con: Miyazaki becoming the second coming of Christ and raining hell fire upon all non followers .... Wait that might be a Pro. Depends which side you're on.
