I’m going to stop wishing Merry Christmas to the non-religious

Let's face it, Christmas has become "present day" for most of the world. I personally know what too many people who celebrate Christmas for materialism's sake and couldn't give a rats ass about Christ.

Why not wish these people what they're really celebrating?

To be fair most holidays are "consumerism" days. Thanksgiving, buy a turkey and other food. Christmas, buy everyone a present. Valentine's day, buy her a present. Easter, buy everyone colorful egg presents. Mothers Day, buy mothers a present. St. Patrick's day, buy beer get drunk. 4th of July, buy a lot of fireworks and beer, get drunk and blow your arm off. Fathers Day, oh who cares, fuck that guy he wasn't even there for you.

I'm not the Grinch. It's these scene-stealing heathens using His birthday.

Remember, he's the reason for the season.
So you are mad that people who aren't very religious or not religious at all are using Christmas to be happy and give each other gifts?

That sounds pretty grinchy to me.

Surely everyone of these where initially meant to praise either your loved ones or to celebrate religious happenings without drowning in materialism. Just because everyone is throwing money around for these "holy days" make it acceptable to forget the meaning behind it.

Dont celebrate Christmas, I celebrate jul time, the holiday those fucking Christian's stole from us, to make there own made up holiday..

so merry jul-time to you my friend😊

You don't have to be non-religious to not give a rat's ass about Christ. So many Christians/Catholics don't even go to church on Sunday. Christmas is just as materialistic for them as it is for atheists. People often only seek comfort in a higher power when they want something, not out of any principled reverence.

Not even trying to be edgy just saying.

In the future we will just be saying Xmas anyway and there will be an 8 foot tall homicidal robot terrorizing everyone on Xmas eve.

I would lump them in as non-religious then.

I don't have a problem with saying happy holidays. I think that's fair. What baffles me are people who complain about thanksgiving. Like listen bitch, you living under a bridge? Missing arms or legs? Got dialysis? No? Then be thankful

"has become"? It's been this way for a long time, like 40 years ago when I was a kid. It's a secular holiday for most people in my experience.

We live in a world where literally, literally doesn't mean literally any more. Hasn't for a long time.

I reckon we can get away with Christmas for us dirty atheists. I'd be happy to opt out of all present buying/receiving altogether though.

I started saying again recently, and it seems to bring a genuine smile to their faces and they thank me.

I think people are so used to not hearing it anymore in this great culture war, that it warms them to actually hear it again, regardless of personal beliefs.

With all the shit we've been bombarded with the last several years, a small reminder with even a bit of nostalgia of simpler times feels good.

I WOULD say "Happy Holidays" as a catch-all since there's multiple ones religious holidays around Christmas but I don't celebrate it anymore (Christmas)... Because of religious beliefs.

That said, if someone says either term to me, I genuinely say "thank you! The same to you" with a smile.

and many people celebrate Thanksgiving without thinking about the founding fathers and the pilgrims (they just eat a turkey feast) , people celebrate Valentines day without thinking about St. Valentine (they just give flowers and candy to loved ones), many people celebrate St. Patrick's Day and don't know who St. Patrick was (they only want to get messed up drunk), most Americans celebrate Cinco De Mayo and don't know it's origins (again they only want to use it to listen to Mexican music and drink margaritas)....etc.........

I'm an atheist. I've always celebrated Christmas.

Christmas is more than just giving presents. Just because I don't believe in Christ doesn't mean I can't share the sentiment of Luke 2:14: "peace on Earth and goodwill towards men" (men here meaning mankind, not just males obviously). It's a time to celebrate and cherish family, to open your heart to the spirit of giving, and to show compassion towards others. I'm no Christian, but it feels like at the core values of Christianity are forgiveness, understanding, and tolerance: all of which you seem to be lacking if you're not willing to say "Merry Christmas" to people who don't hold your same religious beliefs.

OP is the first person I've ever heard of that laments the fact a pagan holiday doesn't actually have much to do with Jesus, who was born in spring.

This revelation will require much contemplation which I will do as an atheist under the light of my Christmas tree

Blame PoH's (People of Hebrew) such as Seth Rogen and Sarah Silverman. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Not been keeping up with the news have ye?

I'm aware of their stupid TV show but I'm not sure I get the "blame the Jews" take.

Anyway, we went around bringing cookies and presents to our neighbors this week, trying to teach our kids to be giving and sharing, didn't post pics or make a show of it, like proper non-Christ heathens. My cousin posted a pic of himself and his kids with guns in Santa hats, like a proper Christ believer in this day and age.

This is true.

I hear some many people in the UK say "this is a Christian country" to justify their........views. However, if this was truly a Christian country then why are church attendances at an all time historical low? Even at Christmas, a vast majority of the UK population don't bother going to church. However, almost everyone in the UK, regardless of their religion, celebrates Christmas.

I haven't looked at the figures for this, but I bet my left nut that the UK has more practising Muslims, Hindus Jews and Sikhs who regularly visit their place of worship.

The UK is not a Christian country, but Christmas is no longer a Christian holiday. The beauty of Christmas isn't its archaic roots to Christianity, but a holiday where everyone can come together and celebrate regardless of their religion.

And if we really want to get picky, Christmas isn't a truly Christmas holiday anyway. Jesus wasn't born on the 25 December. This date (or a date around this time) was to celebrate the Pagan winter celebrations of Roman Saturnalia and Yule, but Christian missionaries gave these celebrations a Christian twist to sway the Pagan masses to Christianity.

Merry Christmas, OP!
