ferrets ferrets ferrets ferrets FERRETS!!!
I did a lot of walking yesterday and now I'm so sore I can barely move... I got a headache, too, which doesn't help things.

Solutions? Remedies? Help me Dr. GAF!

1. Take Advil 2 or 3 times today. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory and really helps when you have muscle pain.

2. Lie down on the floor and do some leg stretches. Bend each knee and hold it for 15 seconds, then both of your legs. By the way - if you strech before and after you walk - you will be much less sore the next morning.

Working your muscles stretches the muscle fibers. If you overuse or overstretch the muscle fibers they will tear, which is normal, but the more you overstretch the longer it takes to heal.

I don't know why you would recommend more stretching, more walking, and knee bends. The muscle fibers are already torn/overstretched WTF would you want to increase the damage? Doesn't it make sense to heal the muscles instead of re-aggravating them.

If you work them a little bit, it gets the blood pumping back into the muscles. I could be wrong in my explanation but the blood in the muscles increase circulation and better aid the enzymes in repairing the torn muscles. I know that doing a light workout when sore does help a shitload.

This is the classic debate - do you simply rest when you have an injury, or do you try to do some physical therapy to "work out" the tendonitis?

Some people like to be inactive when they have an injury, preferring to let their body heal on its own.

However - when you have tendonitis in muscles after exercise, this is often caused by the fact that you overexerted a muscle that you had not properly stretched. By stretching muscles in the injured area, you can stretch both the strained muscles themselves and nearby muscles, thus making it less painful to walk or make sudden movements.

Case in point - I play a lot of softball and started to develop tendonitis in my hip, in which my periformus muscle was putting pressure on my sciatic nerve - which, in turn, was causing pain down my thigh and leg.

I tried resting, but, my tendonitis would be aggravated by mundane things like sitting and driving a car.

So - I tried sets of two or three stretches on my periformus muscle (in my thigh), and the results were amazing. By stretching my injured muscle, it is was able to recover more quickly and handle my softball bp sessions, when I take 75-100 swings.

So - again - it's a matter of debate: rest/inactivity or stretching. I, myself, prefer stretching because I like to stay active.

Tendonitis is completely different from simple muscle soreness. Hell you probably got tendonitis from overuse and then working out the next day.

Hmmmm....here is my understanding of tendonitis (from WebMD) - and it sounds like soreness after walking without stretching fits in this discussion:

"General information about tendonitis

What is a tendon?

A tendon is a tough yet flexible band of fibrous tissue. The tendon is the structure in your body that connects your muscles to the bones. The skeletal muscles in your body are responsible for moving your bones, thus enabling you to walk, jump, lift, and move in many ways. When a muscle contracts it pulls on a bone to cause movements. The structure that transmits the force of the muscle contraction to the bone is called a tendon.

Tendons come in many shapes and sizes. Some are very small, like the ones that cause movements of your fingers, and some are much larger, such as your Achilles tendon in your heel. When functioning normally, these tendons glide easily and smoothly as the muscle contracts. In some cases a tendon will run within a sheath. Inflammation of this sheath can cause an entrapment of the tendon, as is the case in the syndrome trigger finger.

What is tendonitis?

Sometimes the tendons become inflamed for a variety of reasons, and the action of pulling the muscle becomes irritating. If the normal smooth gliding motion of your tendon is impaired, the tendon will become inflamed and movement will become painful. This is called tendonitis, and literally means inflammation of the tendon.

What causes tendonitis?

The most common cause of tendonitis is overuse. Commonly, individuals begin an exercise program, or increase their level of exercise, and begin to experience symptoms of tendonitis. The tendon is unaccustomed to the new level of demand, and this overuse will cause an inflammation and tendonitis."

You're that sore just from walking? Talk about being out of shape :lol :lol :lol

Hate to laugh at your misery OP, but this is kinda true. You just have to get used to walking a lot or get more exercise to avoid this kind of injury in the future.

Right now what you have to do is get some rest.

:lol THAT sore from walking?

...

WALKING? :lol :lol :lol

Fuck, you should walk more, and maybe move on to jogging...and maybe, even running! :O

jk jk

But seriously, that's...sad.

Man STFU miyuru! I don't need to hear that crap from a bunch of hippies! </cartman>

Actually I was experimenting to see if I can take the bus to work rather than drive. I think I can, but I got lost on the way yesterday, so I had to do a lot of walking -- twisted my ankle lightly, too.

Anyway I'm better now -- I took a short walk to the liquor store, so I followed everyone's advice at the same time.

Can you give us a guess as to how much walking you did? 1 block..2 blocks...1 mile? You should be really worried....no one and I mean no one should be that sored even if they do lots of walking.

:lol nice

But yeah I do know what you mean, last summer when I worked fulltime I didn't get much exercise, so whenever I'd go to soccer practice I'd be REALLY sore compared to everyone else, it sucked.

banned (I forget your original name, sorry): it's easy to hate people on the net very fast, so I can't blame you. It's all good though!

Judging by Google maps total for the day was about 4 miles.

I bet if you asked your average Houstonian to walk that far he'd be sore too. :lol I used to walk all the time in San Francisco but have been out of practice in the past half year or so. That's part of the reason why I want to stop using the car for my commute, too; if it'll help me get off my ass more often.

Blood carries nutrients and oxygen. If someone is sitting on their ass all day, only the bare minimum of blood will be sent to the muscles. If they're sore from exercising previously, it would help to get a pump. Relatively light exercise, but enough to cause miscrotrauma to the muscles, can increase bloodflow more than enough. If my legs are sore, they will feel a lot better if I'm walking and stretching several times a day.

Fenegi: Well, your body will be stronger after this. You can walk 6 miles next time and feel less sore.

I find it hard that somebody could get sore from walking and in so much pain. Not trying to belittle you but I'm assuming you're not that active?

Fennec:

What about Icy-Hot or Ben-Gay. They're supposed to be good for sore muscles and achiness and such?

Or what about a hot bath?

Well duh, I live in Houston. We have nothing but fat people, Mexican people, and Mexican fat people. :lol

I probably overstated it a bit because I was tired in addition to sore. I'm feeling perfectly normal now.

You're probably one of those fat people....you're fucking pathetic. Get off your fat ass and maybe you wont get sore next time you walk a block. I'm from Houston and Mexican too and have no problems walking any fucking distance.

Dude, 4 mi. is not a block :lol and if I'm fuckin' pathetic, then so is about 75% of Houston. I am certainly out of shape, but I don't have a gut or anything.

Besides, is this usually how you respond to someone engaging in physical activity?

acidviper said:
No its not the same.

Thanks for enlightening me with your one line dismissals of my posts. You're right - the advice I've gotten from three different physical therapists about how to rehab injuries is total BS. "It's not the same" - you're breaking it down hard for us now....

This is a great point. The microtraumas and increased bloodflow make your legs feel better, which is one of the main reasons why walking and stretching several times per day is so valuable.

yikes.

You may have also been sore from lactic acid produced from anaerobic (lack of oxygen essentially, your blood cells were not able to supply enough oxygen to your muscles, thus producing a nasty biproduct) exercise. A good way to get rid of lactic acid is to rub the affected muscles and drink lots of water before, during and after exercise (which I think somebody already mentioned). Even though this usually only happens after strenuous activity, since you may be a little out of shape, you may be experiencing this since you walked so far. Light exercise and water intake will wash away the lactic acid next time you get sore.

Instead of belittling you for letting 4 miles of walking kick your butt (:p), I will instead suggest that you do not drink the tempestuous and mouth-watering liquor with just the right bite and instead pound down some water right now. Lots of it. Because in your condition, you have a high chance of being waken up in the middle of the night by the worst calf cramps you will ever feel. The water will help somewhat, but to be laying there in bed all helpless and shit will humble you a bit.

So yeah, drink water.

How come miyuru's avatar doesn't annoy or bother me, but everyone else? Then again I've posted my share of creepy avatars but that's beside the point. :lol

fennec, go for a foot and leg message. Or better yet a whole body one.

I once had to walk 15 miles without a break in the middle of the night, because I missed the last bus home and didn't have money to take a cab. My legs were sore for a day.

it's the combination of the avatar + inane ramblings of a child unleashed from his parents nest.

Trust me no guy, girl, or dog would meet face to face with this ugly and disgusting piece of crap

Wow he should look at the mirror and worry more bout himself than someone else getting sore.

But i have to admit..4 miles and getting sore is low. I do watchman nightshift, and walk maybe 15 miles plus nighttime and feel nothing from it.

By a bizarre coincidence I have exactly the same problem.

Except in my case it's because I did a lot of drinking yesterday. :(
