I can no longer smoke cigarettes

So I quit smoking about 3 months ago. I've cheated (i.e. 1 or 2 cigarettes) about 4 or 5 times since then. Each time I do, the next day I've got a runny nose, a sore throat, and a cough, and generally feel like I've got a bad cold. It goes away in a few days. I cheated again a couple of days ago, and, again, I feel like shit.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? I've quit smoking MANY times before, only to start up again without any physical (or at least, immediately noticable) side effects. Have my lungs finally said "FUCK YOU" and told my respitory system to go down at a mere whiff of tobacco smoke?

I only smoke cigars or a tobacco pipe, and that's not too often. Never had anything like that happen. Maybe you became allergic. You smoking the same ones?

Consider yourself lucky, not you have extra help from your own body.

Has never happened to me before, and I haven't heard of anything like it. Sounds like a good defense mechanism, though, as Dj Slam suggested.

Sounds like you developed allergies to them.

You've..evolved!

My mother quit years ago but very occassionally she does have a cigarette, and it makes her feel ill. Not really what your describing, she feels ill right after the cigarette and it only lasts a little while (no more than an hour or two), but still...I suggest you see a doctor and make sure there's nothing seriously wrong.

And now I have an idea. If I can create a drug that makes your body react harshly to nicotine (vomiting, stomachache, etc.), then I can sell it on the market as an anti-smoking aid. It would be so easy; the drug would last a long time, and who would want to risk smoking if it means throwing up? I'd be so rich. I must market this. Damn I'm a genius.

Add something to make it addictive on the side and you've got a winner.

You have to realize that you haven't quit smoking at all if you continue to smoke "1 or 2" cigarettes from time to time. It's either/or, not something in-between.

Thats bullshit. Anybody who's smoked and quit knows the difference between screwing up and cheating, and breaking down and just saying fuck it and getting back into it full on.

There is an in between, and this dude should be comended for even making it to that point.

I used to smoke as well but since I quit I can't even finish one when I'm drunk without feeling sick. I suspose this is a good thing.

I have a few friends that first started smoking when I was around, at first I figured maybe they're just experimenting and will get over it eventually...well they didn't. I tried to get them to stop but it was too late for them, they were hooked. I get pissed whenever friends smoke around me, I usually stand far and they know the reason and start saying Im a little bitch, HA we'll see whose the little bitch years from now when they got some lung disease. Then again, I live in L.A. so my lungs are just as bad as a smokers. =(
