Take for example, Madden:

I walk into the store, and they don't understand; I need exclusive games. I'm a caveman and I'm frightened by your strange multiconsole titles, so only put out one version at a time. If not, I'll sue your WHOLE STINKING COMPANY.

it's strange, but i don't buy multi-console games either. they're a mongrel breed and I'm not interested in them.

I dont think all multiconsole games are created the same. Developers know that gamers will recognize a straight port.

The only initially multiconsole game I own is Sands of Time, I believe.

No Madden 05 for PSP, Game Boy Color, N-Gage, Gizmondo, Nintendo 64, Saturn, TV Plug 'n' Play or Lynx? ABSOLUTE DISASTER. EA's circling the drain I tell you.

EA should have their own console, and release all their crap on it..

= less crap in other consoles libraries

Isn't that what the PS2 was when it came out?

Anyway, I generally go the same route. Don't want to buy it on PS2 because it's the ugly duckling version. Don't want to buy it on Xbox because PS2 was the primary SKU and the Xbox version just isn't that much better. Don't want to buy it on PC because it's the red-headed stepchild version and probably has dozens of bugs and crappy consolified menus and levels and doesn't take advantage of my godly hardware.

This impasse lasts until the game is $20 or less on one or more platforms.

I notice that too.. I buy less multiplatform stuff.. wierd

I suggest you give u gaming now then. Multiplatform is the way of the future.

I very rarely buy multiplatform games as well. My game library is mad up 90+ percent of console exclusives or games that were originally exclusive. I also like to keep a series to one system if I can.

I dont think I own a multiplatform game at all..

Resident evil 4 doesn´t really count since it will be out for GC long before ps2..

multiplatform feel unfinished on all consoles I think.. even on ps2 (the home of multiplatform titles)

Come to think about it I tend to shy away from multiplatform games as well. For some most likely unconcious reason I just don't consider them. The only real multiplatform games I play on a regualar basis are Ubi's.

There are some exceptions with fighters and those of extreme amazingness though (Psychonauts comes to mind.)

don't worry, you'll be fine next gen. PS3 will the primary SKU *and* the best looking.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves..

Even if they are the same, power-wise, because PS3 *will* be the primary SKU (simple business logic), then it won't look any worse, unlike this gen.

OK, so I should rephrase. 'won't look any worse' isn't the same as 'better looking'

So if a game is 'exclusive' and then turns out not to be (a la Resident Evil 4) do you suddenly lose interest and destroy the game?

I think it's not as obvious that PS3 will be primary SKU for all multiplatform games. If you think about it, EA is putting most of their major franchises on xbox 360, and developed exclusively for it. Do you think they will do a new engine from scratch for ps3?

Yep. Or I trade it in and get the superior version (a la Grand Theft Auto)

I don't mind ports that come several months/years afterwards, but I dislike games that release simultaneously for 2+ consoles. They rarely take advantage of the systems.

For example, Silent Hill 4 should never have been multiplatform. I'm aware that a PS2-only release would'nt have fixed stuff like the story or the broken combat mechanics, but at least it might've LOOKED better. :D It didn't make any sense from a financial standpoint either. The total sales of both versions didn't excel the sales of SH3, and surely it must've been more expensive to fund the extra Xbox development on top of the initial cost?

Maybe because 360 comes this year and there's lots of money to be made on its "exclusivity" (hey look I'm exclusive cause there's no competition!). EA would be stupid to wait for PS3 and miss those 360 sales.

Now once PS3 rolls out, say bye-bye to EA's 360 love. Don't fool yourself thinking otherwise.

PS1, PS2, PS3.

The Legacy.

i did a ritual burning of my copy of RE4. i roasted marshmallows over the flames.

edit: but seriously the difference with a game like RE4 is that it was built from the ground up for the GC and so it's the best version of the game. it's no loss seeing it on the PS2. same with Viewtiful Joe. and killer 7 i suppose, but then i don't give a shit about that game anyway.

Indeed. Threads like these just make me shake my head
while enjoying a kickin' rad round of Soul Calibur II or Psychonauts

It's not like a conscious decision where I go to the store and think,
"hmmm i might get this game, it looks like fun. I wonder if it's multi-console... oh, it is. NO SALE!"
It's just coincidence I suppose. I was thinking of getting the splinter cell games for GC, but i figure the PC games are probably better.

You can bring up examples of Soul Calibur 2 and Psychonauts, but then I donÂ’t like fighting games and Psychonauts isnÂ’t on GC (is it on PC?). I havenÂ’t got any multi-console games (ignoring VJ and RE4) either because itÂ’s a matter of circumstance or taste. *shrugs*

Because 360 is out first. They are also still developing most, if not all of those on current gen too.

Do you think they will do a new engine from scratch for ps3?

Yes, I do. Although they may base around renderware, so not exactly custom code. I fully expect that after the launch titles, EA's 2006 main titles to lead development on PS3. Pure speculation on my part, obviously, but thats my belief.

While I agree, I also think it's MS that took a big sigh when they knew EA would develop for the next year on their console. As much as people hate them,

no EA support = certain death.

I only have a problem with multiconsole games when they're quick cash-ins, like games based on movie licenses, or a mindless FPS based on the Unreal engine. Quality titles appeal to me. A lot of multiplatform games aren't quality titles... so I shun a lot of multiplatform games.

I hardly ever by a Multi title.

Nearly all my games are exclusives for either XBox or PS2.
That seems to be where the best games are.
Unfortunately it's also where some of the worst games are.

IMO: KOTOR sucks, The Getaway 2 sucks. God of War is fantastic, DOAU is fantastic.
Multiconsole games are usually average to suck in my opinion.
There are exceptions though but not many.

Yeah, cuz good games should not be enjoyed by as many people as possible, and companies shouldn't be allowed to make as much money as possible.

And refering to extreme (and therefore piss-poor) examples does not make this argument any stronger.

Its amazing how short-sighted and selfish video game fans can be, especially the "hardcore" who always profess that they want to see the best for video games.

On the internet, hardcore is synonymous with elitist.

I'm having trouble swallowing that this is a real thread...

I second this.

But also bear in mind that this is the same place that certain people WON'T buy a game because they don't like the box art.... seriously... WTF?!?
