I can't wait to tell people I have a Steam Box

Do you plan on purchasing a Steam Box?

Nope. Ray-tracing is a selling point because they improved the general performance, not literally adding all of the RDNA 4 features in. Cerny himself literally said: "The base technology for PS5 Pro is somewhere between RDNA 2 and RDNA 3,".

LOL it's even written in the official slide by Cerny

Future RDNA = RDNA 4

RDNA 3 ray-tracing is not even in the same ball-park

But hey, I'm sure AMD will magically offer the same performance of PS5 Pro on RDNA 3 cards with no dedicated hardware...

Have fun waiting for it...

1. I love how you're missing the joke.

2. I love how obviously shook you are at Valve beating Microsoft to the punch with this.

Gaming moves forward when players and developers have more ways to play and create, especially across open platforms. Expanding access across PC, console, and handheld devices reflects a future built on choice, core values that have guided Xbox's vision from the start. As one of the largest publishers on Steam, we welcome new options for players to access games everywhere. Congrats on today's announce.

But all jokes aside, I really can't see this being a viable machine for anything other than indies or as a good emulation box. The specs don't warrant it to have any kind of longevity for playing new games without severe settings reduction.

This does wonders on the Steam Deck! I expect heavy mileage on Steam Machine for stuff like this.

It can't perform miracles, but it helps a lot. I can understand why some people don't like stuff like this, though.

That's just the damage control talking. This is just step one for them. There will be many Steam Boxes to choose from in the future.

Xbox's selling point will be "you can play your Steam games on our device in addition to your Xbox games" and Valve just nullified it.

Literally the BVH improvement is the only major thing tying it loosely to RDNA 4, because it also improves in that area.

You said it's equivalent to an RX 9070, when the PS5 Pro GPU ray-tracing compute power is around 12 to 15 TFLOPS, the RX 9070 is around 20. You said it has machine learning accelerators (MLA), which don't exist in the hardware.

Just accept the console grab-bagged some features across the RDNA line to make a mid-gen refresh, instead of trying to gas up its literally equivalent to RDNA 4.

PS5 Pro NPU doesn't have specialized matrix cores and higher AI throughput of RDNA 4 for FSR4, RDNA 3 gpus will just use general compute units with software to do it. Both will run FSR4 worse (less fps gain), but likely get close to visual improvement, which is better than both are now.

And then they will be more interesting to look at.

Valve just made a small form factor PC tho, a weak one at that. And it won't play Xbox games like you said either.

Nah. Why get this in 2026 when I can get something much better in another year. Our Phildom is strong.

Their mandate is 4K 60fps upscaled which is what consoles aim for in most cases. It might be a touch weaker but it should do the needful in most cases.

A small form factor PC is what the next Xbox will be too btw. You think Xbox is beefing up their Play Anywhere volume so they can keep making console games? Nope. You'll be playing primarily Xbox PC games on the nextbox. It might have a power advantage at launch but Steam Boxes will be keeping them on their toes.

I'd like to see this light a fire under Xbox's ass, but given how limp dick the ROG Ally X is on the experience side despite being more powerful I'm not hopeful.

If they didn't spike Game Pass pricing, they'd be in a better position to offer more for staying on Windows.

You mean an X-Steam-Box?

Nah, the Magnus will be an X-Steam-Box since it will have Game Pass, Steam, and GTA 6. A lot more RAM too.

I doubt it. How many Steam Decks are there? It wouldn't go along with the other thread you posted about how Valve wants to keep it simple for gamers and developers to select the best settings for Steambox. MS still has GTA 6 and easy to access Game Pass on Magnus and enough RAM to future proof their device.

He will be giddy posting the DF results of games running on the Steambox vs. Magnus. I'm looking forward to them. BTW, I am excited about Steam getting into the ring. Anything to keep competition fierce since we win.

Depending on price, it could be a very cheap way to get into PC gaming.

I guess the point is for people who want PC gaming at console prices.

I'm certainly interested if the price is right.
If the RAM/VRAM is 16/8, it feels like it's hobbled out of the gate. I'm not expecting Alienware, but it seems to me it'll basically be born lower mid-range, with very limited future prospects. Like, if there was such a thing as an eMachines console. I don't get it. 32/16 would've made a lot more sense.

5-6 million. Keep in mind that Steam Deck is a supplementary device just like the Steam Machine is. The Steam PC app will always be Valve's bread and butter. Microsoft has no strength on the PC side with their Xbox app.

The Valve engineers in the same interview said additional Steam Machines are going to happen, along with users being able to build their own. The simplicity is the experience SteamOS provides, which is vastly superior to the experience found on the ROG Ally X, and more performative.

GTA6 is a boon, but let's be real. It's a console game and people likely to play it already have an Xbox Series S/X. No need to upgrade to $1000+ hardware for that alone. If it's 30fps on consoles (likely) then it will be 30fps on Magnus no matter how much power it has.

Fuck a Game Pass.

Anything to keep competition fierce since we win.
That's the dream. Being honest, I will own a Magnus in addition to the Steam Machine. I'm heavily invested in both ecosystems.
