I believe that we live in a time in which there are more good games releasing than ever before , even with all the "bad apples" the industry has , problem is that after gaming for so many years i need a masterpiece to get me really excited , i finished rise of the ronin recently and ghost of tsushima because i wanted to see which one is better and they were good games dont get me wrong , rise of the ronin had better combat GoT had better storytelling ( although the story wasnt groundbreaking ) but both games had mediocre open worlds with tedious side quests , i finished them but i forced myself to do

i need another masterpiece that makes me want to play it non stop and lose track of time , the safest bet would be GTA 6

which game do you think will be the next masterpiece ?

Many cool games on the horizon like Crimson Desert or Strager of Heaven but man, I don't see anything that could be qualified as "masterpiece" releasing in the near future.

Your best bet might be going for the backlog and playing something you've missed on.

Next masterpiece? There are a ton of great games out there, I dont see how its possible to have experienced them all. Just dig around and try something different. Dont Just box yourself into just one genre or just AAA. Small scope games can be masterpieces. i.e. Tetris

(Whenever I look at my backlog)

For me personally, I have high expectations that Saros will deliver next year. I recently went back to Returnal just because it's that good, and I still feel it has the best gameplay of this gen so far.

How did I miss that Housemarque is releasing a new game. Returnal has been one of the best PS exclusive all gen. Just looked it up, Saros is due out next year. Can't fucking wait.

Masterpiece.... a true genre defining masterpiece or just the next overhyped big budget AAA that gives more of the same safe formula?
most games that are considered masterpieces are not AAA , just look at expedition 33 , its already considered one of the best rpgs ever made and a huge middle finger to AAA games

i didnt play it yet because i have alot of games on the waiting list

Yup, expedition 33 is more in my tastes of defining a masterpiece.

Next GTA does little to hype me up for a real masterpiece. It'll set the world on fire sales wise but unlikely to be "masterpiece"

yeah they recently said that their main goal is making premium single player games , i kinda hate roguelikes but im glad alot of fans of the genre will get another AAA game

There will be no more masterpieces. Only 10gig day one patches, and games that could've been masterpieces had they not forgotten about critical gameplay parts already established decades ago.

No GTA has ever been a masterpiece in my opinion. Only a very few games have been great in the past 6 years. maybe some people are too young or just have a great "ignorance is bliss" quality about them to know what really great games we have had in the past. I envy those people.

I think GTA 5 is myself. And some people seem to forget we have plenty of poor games in the past, in the so-called glory days of video gaming

There have been many great games made over the past 6 years IMO

I don't doubt GTA 6 will be good, but a masterpiece? 😂
It will be like a typical American action movie made for dumb audiences, shooting, car chases, explosions, shallow story.

Resident Evil 9. Highest budget and biggest team the series has ever had during it's renaissance of GOATed games? I genuinely think it'll be one of the best the series has ever had.

We'll see if it outdoes RE4make, which was also a masterpiece.

OP what do you currently consider masterpieces?

That'll tell you if you'll see one soon or not.

Yeah, the roguelike mechanics were kinda weak, but the gameplay itself is phenomenal. Here's hoping that Housemarque took some lessons from Returnal and improve upon the formula with Saros.

GTA 6, followed by Intergalactic: Heretic Prophet.

Those are the only 2 I can guarantee will be masterpieces - If one releases before those, its a bonus.

The last masterpiece released for me was TLOU 2

Resident Evil 9 might be next true masterpiece; It's not just another sequel. RE9 is the final chapter of the Ethan Winters arc, in development since 2018, making it the longest-developed RE title ever. Capcom's RE Engine is still evolving, and with RE9 skipping old-gen, expect a huge leap in visuals, scale, and enemy design.
Rumors point to a semi-open world structure, deeper lore, and more freedom than Village. After RE4 Remake's surgical action, RE9 could be Capcom's boldest, most atmospheric horror game yet; it's GOTY material for me. And I can't wait.

Kingdom Come 2 and Silent Hill 2 remake is the only games released in the last 5 or so years I would remotely consider true masterpieces. Masterpiece for me is a game where art style, story, gameplay and world immersion are all 10/10 with little to no flaws I would change. Games of that quality come along very rarely now.

There were a few titles that came very close, but fell short in a few areas (Elden Ring is a good example, almost perfect, but had too many niggles and flaws for me to comit to the masterpiece title personally)

In fact as I type this, I don't think KCD 2 is going to be topped for at least another generation. I literally felt as though I was living and breathing in that world at times. I spent entire weekends just wandering around, hunting and whoring.

PS3 gen had multiple disruptive masterpieces. PS4 and PS5 games are just prettier.
I'm optimistic AI will enable new experiences next gen.
