I pulled into a Gas Station right across the street from my house. It's an Esso Gas Station I have been using for the last 15 years.
I pull up to a pump and there is a sign that says we're out of regular gas enjoy Supreme+ on us for the price of regular. Its cold as fuck in Canada so over my work suit im wearing a 4XL USC hoodie for warmth.
As I begin pumping I notice that the pump is charging me a 1.33 per litre as opposed to the 1.03 it was supposed to.
I click the intercom button to ask the clerk if the promotion will be applied when I enter the station to pay. He then tells me. "That sign was left there from last night, the promotion is over and we wont honour that price.
Confused I take the sign down from the pump and bring it into the station to show him. Now not only is he rude but he's also telling me to tell someone who cares.
I again repeat. "Yo you need to honour thos. I wouldn't be trying to fill up my lil ass avenger with premium fuel"
He tells me he wont do anything. I again implore him to honour the price from a customer service standpoint.
He looks at me, picks up the phone and says "Im calling the police, I dont feel safe around you"
I ask "Why? Because I'm black?" To which he responds definitively while looking me dead in my eye. "YES!" And proceeds to call the cops. When I tell him Im more than happy to wait for the police to settle this, he then decides to call his manager a dude who Ive personally bought gas from over the years and even went as far as buying him egg nog last year when he said he's never tried it.
Now he comes in yelling at me saying Im an idiot and that they dont have to honour shit.
Heated, I sit my ass in the corner and call my girlfriend so I dont lose my cool. She suggests before the cops get there to take off my hoodie.
In between waiting for the cops I told every single black person that walked in what happened. Some just looked at the man disappointed, another turned away.
Cops get there they ask me whats the issue, I give them the run down and they say "Seriously? This shit isnt worth our time, why did he call" to which I say "Because Im Black, was the reason he gave me" baffled the Cops shake their head. The manager finally says that he will pay for my gas out of pocket. But to me the damage was done.
I paid for my Gas at the Supreme price, told the manager that he and Esso has forever lost my business, wrote an angry email to their Corporate and now im here. Venting.
I guess because Im in Canada I fall into the trap of believing that we're above discrimination, especially considering I live in a very ethnic neighbourhood.
