I feel like my love for Nintendo games is fading

I'll give you a hint: Graphical fidelity and capability is not the only thing that can cause one's mind to be blown in regards to video games.

But the graphics are the only aspect of the game that doesn't look like the 3DS game we all played a year ago. What is mind blowing about a sequel?

I'm actually getting back into Nintendo after a long hiatus. I had a Wii, but I gave up on it rather quickly. I stopped playing DS and began to concentrate solely on PC, Vita and PS3.

Now I upgraded to 3DS and Wii U and I'm really enjoying them. Pikimin 3, NSLU, W101, WWHD are all in my rotation right now, along with GTA V. I'm also playing EO:Untold and Fire Emblem on 3DS.

Looking forward to all the upcoming games as well.

I am of two minds about Nintendo.

On one hand, I am sick to death of Mario. Sunshine disappointed me so much I still never unsealed SMG and SMG2 from their boxes and I do not have any plans to do so. My love for 2D Mario died long ago. This apathy extends to all yoshi or dk or luigi games. I buy them and don't even play them for more than 30 mins (if that).

I am tired of Zelda. Maybe ALTtp2 will renew it. But I doubt it.

Mario Kart and Mario Party are fun but I don't have gamer friends anymore for local co-op.

Then they make games like Smash, Pikmon, , Fire Emblem Awakening, Xenoblade etc that are so much more superior than other developers' output that I am reminded why Nintendo games are the industry's paragon.

The level design displayed, from what we have seen, is genius. You can tell it's an evolution of Galaxy's design as it just takes the design principles in those games even further (minus the gravity stuff, at least in what has been shown shown). Adding in simultaneous multiplayer and designing levels around it creates a lot of new possible situations, and with the cherry power up they are giving you a way to do those levels as a single player, without compromising the new complexity that is added by designing around 2 - 4 people being present. The core new power-up of the game, the cat suit, also allows walls to be climbed which is giving many of the levels a more vertical flavour than before and giving us level design in a Mario game that hadn't been seen before. There also seem to be some very interesting gimmick levels like the shadow one (especially) and water monster one. Additionally, the few boss fights we have seen, including Bowser, look to be more varied than typical Mario bosses. The levels also seem considerably larger than 3D Land and the world map allows you to be fully mobile on it and even has secrets of its own.

So really the only thing that looks like that 3DS game (that not everyone played nor was bad anyways) is the way they are setting up the camera angle and what they chose to actually title the game.

You hated Sunshine...so you didn't play Galaxy...dude, you've made a huge mistake.

The problem is when Nintendo tries to do something like Halo, they mess it up big time. Geist.

Makes me really wonder what is wrong with Nintendo if they don't understand the reasons that make games like CoD, TLOU, and Halo popular.
Geist was never intended to be Nintendo's Halo.

Everyone is skeptical about the Wii U gamepad until they get their hands on one for a little while.

Personally, I never got why it was such a turn-off for everyone. Didn't we learn from the DS that two screens are better than one? So many innovative gameplay opportunities, off-screen play, great for watching videos/surfing the internet (that browser is so god damn good, it's better than my computer browser), sits in your hands and plays comfortably... So what's the issue? At it's worst it provides a convenient way to manage inventories and maps in game, at it's best it redefines videogames as we know them and opens up creative new avenues for the medium. Most of the Wii U hate I've seen reeks of the classic videogamer cognitive dissonance. It's an expensive hobby, so it's much easier to convince yourself that something sucks than it is to fork out 350 dollars, or lament the fact that you don't have 350 dollars with which to fork outwardly.
Outside of the vocal minority hear, the gamepad is inconvenient and less comfortable than a standard controller. I get what Nintendo were trying to do, but they should have just made a stand alone tablet instead of forcing it into the console. Also, one big screen is better than two little ones. You don't see dual screens in mobile devices outside of Nintendo and what little support there is for something like smartglass is an additional feature, not a primary selling point like Wii U. It's just not something most people want imo. Their controls are a turn off for just about every gamer I know.

As for Nintendo's game output, I feel like they've really been recycling their IP's too much lately. I'm burnt out on Mario and Zelda tbh. They need to give them all a break. I understand why they're going for quick games like NSMBU, SM3DL/W, OoT, WW and now DK but they're wearing out the IP in the process of trying to get sales momentum. In an ideal world, they would have had some new ideas to offer with a new system, but that's not really what we're getting. I think it's time they give these series some breathing room and bring back some old ones like F-Zero and Starfox. It wouldn't hurt if they let Retro develop a true FPS either, but by the time they got around to it, I think it will be too late to save the Wii U. They're better off letting Retro start that for their next system after DK: TF is released. In general, there's a lack of variety on Nintendo's systems as of late too. All of it adds up to disappointment, so it's no wonder their sales are doing so well.

The 3ds is awesome and the new Marion coming out looks amazing. I am hardly a Nintendo fanboy and even I am still digging Nintendo.
