I find Pop-GAF utterly baffling (RANT)

It's true. There are millions upon millions of 13 year old girls and adult gay men that do sincerely love pop music.

So what did we learn from this thread? Pop music is popular. Mind fucking blown. I thank you OP for helping us get to the bottom of this.

I pretty much agree with the OP, with the notable exception that I'm just not really annoyed by it, because I don't go into those threads very often. But they are utterly baffling. Like a Gibbering Mouther come to life in thread form.

Anyways, I see that is still the case, so shine on, you crazy fugazis.

I want to feel empathy for the people of Pop-GAF. Sometimes their threads pop up outside of the easily ignorable Community into OT, so I'll skim these threads. But it's a bit weird reading grown-ass people being into this, so here are my 2 cents.

I just can't tell if the people are being hipster ironic to appreciating pop music or are genuine in their love of it. They have their own lingo, nicknames, reaction gifs. They act very catty towards each other. Oh and they have reaction gifs for their favorite pop musician for every single occasion. And nearly all of them are diva like responses. My fascination is with people investing so much into pop artists with short-term career spans compared to other genre musicians. Most of it is based on image rather than long-living talent like playing instruments. There are exceptions like...ok I don't know any pop singer whose voice still sounds great, maybe Mariah Carey?

These aren't people who just hear the singles and find them catchy. These are people who listen to the whole album, and buy them.

I have a feeling these are people who actually still listen to the radio.

Someone said in a recent thread that Taylor Swift actually wrote half of her own songs, like it was something to be commended...

The weirder thing is the model factory pop stuff like K-pop, J-pop, or Simon Cowell bands. SNSD or whatever STD-sounding abbreviation. When I think of those model factories where they pump out these manufactured character archetypes that are zoned into certain people's personalities, I just think Perfect Blue.

I have a feeling they're self-aware of all the manufactured bullshit in pop and have regressed to liking it again like they're back in high school. Maybe it's a guilty pleasure in their age where they just want catchy songs or "easy listening", but it's not obvious in their comments that seem serious. Someone compared The XX and Tallest Man on Earth to Taylor Swift...(maybe that person just had an expectation problem or something)

If you're Pop-GAF, please destroy my misconceptions and tell me why you love pop music more than anything else.

LOLx2 @ Someone thinking that the Justin Bieber thread is an example of POP GAF ruining "discussion" even while admitting that any OT discussion in that thread had already been ruined by photoshop.

When it really comes down to it, the bulk of the hate POP GAF gets really comes down to people being pressed that they're not in on the joke. Well, whose problem is that? Certainly not ours.

I find that a lot of the problem also stems from then not realizing there is a lot more to pop music than what you hear on the radio. I keep hearing teen girls being brought up, but the fact is many of the artists we enjoy in POPGAF are not generally listened to by "13 year old white girls".

Pop is a huge genre and you aren't doing yourselves any favors by narrowing it down to Britney and Gaga.
 
Britney certainly is shunned by the community if she had one of the biggest hits of her career last year.

Can't say the same about those wrestling RATINGS tho

This is true. The big names only really come up when we're slinging mud at each other or when they have a project coming up. But I think most of the regular posters in POP GAF more regularly stan for acts that wouldn't be considered in the same league as the big girls, sales or impact.
