I got braces, need advice. This sucks.

I think i'll probably ask for permanent retainers (in the far far future), it's not like they're as invasive as braces, and it looks like it's just a wire glued in place.

Im 29 and have had mine for 18 months now. Its a piece of piss. No complaints. Am looking forward to them coming off of course.

First week? is rough. Get some mouth moisturising solution and get it all hydrated in there. Also get picksters and use those to floss. You can get special floss but picksters cut down the time it takes.

My teeth use to be really jacked up and I've always felt ashamed of how they looked. My parents were poor immigrants with a lot of kids so they couldn't afford braces for me and my 1 year older sister(we have it the worse among our siblings). For the longest time I just assumed that my teeth were too messed up to fix and that I could never afford them. Then 3 years ago my older sister(only older by 1 year) got braces at age 30. This completely changed my perspective. I didn't see her until she had them for 5 months and her teeth looked so much better than it did before. So I made it my goal to get them as well.

It's been 10 months now since I got them. I was 32 then so I'm 33 now. I didn't think it was possible, but my teeth actually looks decent now. I'm very glad I went through with this. Not just to make my teeth straighter, but to preserve them for as long as possible. It was hard to keep my teeth clean the way they use to be. And I've done some damage that can't be repaired. But at least I can hold onto what I have now.

In other words, it's never too late. Do it now if you really want to. Don't wait, I wish I would have done this 10 years ago.

I had braces as a kid.

No advice. They fucking suck. lol. And I did not adhere to any of my orthodontist's recommendations. I ate hard food all the time (carefully), and occasionally broke them sometimes.

And I didn't wear my retainer after I got them off. To HELL with that. Plus, it made me gag so I kinda had a legitimate excuse.

When they tighten your braces, your mouth is going to be in so much pain. I just remember wanting to cry because it was so awful and persistent.

Super late edit: On the upside, people will always compliment you on your smile/teeth in general.

Hope you're doing okay, OP! Lots of good tips in this thread. I remember my first set of braces went on a few days before Christmas as a kid, which was a bit cruel. Soft foods that year. Then my wisdom teeth showed up a few years later and ruined a lot of the work the braces did, had to go through it all again. Seconding the Invisalign rec for those interested, friends have had them, and they are pretty impressive.

I'm 28 and I'm DYING to get braces.

One of my top front teeth has moved itself back over the years. It looks and feels horrible. I was so damn close to getting braces before losing my job and dental insurance a couple of months ago. :(

To be able to smile again with confidence would be really nice and would change my life. I don't care if I have to wait until I'm in my thirties to do it. I'm doing it, goddamnit.

nah, forget braces man. Mom went thorugh her life worrying about her teeth and getting them fixed just to end up dying on a blood thinner dentist/doctor stroke issue. I'll take my teeth as they are

Seems like a lot of work just to fix a few teeth for me but I wouldn't stop anyone from doing it , just not for me

The elastics made it suck even more for me. It's hard to eat with those things in your mouth as well.

I REALLY need braces :(

Question tho, If you have an overbite and it causes your lips to protrude, will braces fix that?

I don't really know, you should ask a dentist/ortho about that. I had an overbite and had to get jaw surgery to fix that. Only ate fluid / mashed stuff for 6 weeks or so but it wasn't that bad.

Ridiculous post. Braces have nothing to do with that. But do what you want to do.

My upper teeth are perfect but my lower bite has started to go in all directions in the last couple of years (32 now). My wife wants me to get them done so I guess I have to take the plunge.

Looked up Invisalign and it looks cool.

Goddamn it's expensive (3-6k), I wish my parents sorted that out when I was a kid and it would've been covered by public medical care -.-

23 about to start the process of prep to get braces soon. I need to get 2 teeth removed and then braces and then implants.

Dental care in low income areas growing up was total crap. But now I can get good dental care I'm going all in.

I'm hoping for invisalign but I just want to have a good smile.

My Ortho said I'd only have to wear mine for a year. Sound too good to be true?

It depends entirely on how bad your teeth are. Most of the time the treatment takes 2 years, but if your case is not bad, I guess 1 year is reasonable.

Is your ortho a reputed one? consider that as with everything, there are subpar orthos. Be careful with that.

I don't know how reputable he is, but my teeth aren't that bad so I'll hope for the best.

Cool maybe I'll go get then myself soon. Sucks not wanting to smile due to misaligned teeth :/

I'm in the same boat.
My doc told me that i have to get my wisdom teeth out first and then get the braces.
I think ill do it next year, I'll be 33 then.

I would go with ceramic braces, Invisalign, while sounding good in theory, is a true test of commitment. I know i would take them out here and there, thing is, you need them in 23h, be extra careful if you drink anything thats non water (it will seep under the plastic) - meh
Would rather have things that are in my mouth until things are done and i can't do anything about it except to wait it out.

I wanted invisalign or ceramics but they do have their cons. I heard ceramics can get stained. Imagine having yellow stained ceramics for a year or two. Gross. Invisalign would be cool, but you have to be very dedicated to keeping them in and they do cost more. I don't know how much more though

In my opinion, Invisalign is cool if you are a TV presenter or something like that, but if you're an average joe, I don't see the point. Compared to traditional braces, Invisalign is more expensive and isn't suitable for the most extreme cases of malocclusion.

Traditional ceramic braces are barely noticeable and on top of that, as someone else said, when you're an adult, nobody give a rat ass about braces, so forget about being bullied. Hell, most probably you'll receive compliments for taking care of your dental health.

Remember that having a perfect smile is not just about aesthetics but also about oral health. Crooked teeth are much harder to clean and the chances of getting cavities are higher. If you read about it, having crooked teeth is the reason some people get headaches or muscular pain in the face/neck.

Yeah, as others said the soreness will go away after a few days and only come back (and usually not as bad) for a few days when they tighten them.

As others also said, a Water Pik is a god send. Buy one ASAP. Cheap and make cleaning a ton easier.

I'm not sure the brackets themselves stain, but the clear ligatures do. So basically at every adjustment my teeth are white again. I try to be careful now about tea and coffee.

I think the bonding glue can also stain but I haven't noticed that myself.

And they always knew when you didn't wear them.

yup. dreaded the ortho visits because mine would shame me lol

but for anyone getting them now...do what your ortho tells you and fight through the pain. i think i probably added several months to my treatment by not wearing my rubberbands for the amount of time instructed.

Depends on how bad your case is.

For example, I just have gappy teeth that i was to tighten, and I only need 40 weeks. Im 30weeks in now, and everything is looking good.

So why would one go for invisalign over the traditional braces?
I wanted invisilign but I have bigger moves to be made; whereas, someone who chooses invisilign only has small moves to be made. Granted you can get regular braces even if you just need those tiny moves to be made but I guess some people don't like the "brace face" look.

Ceramic braces make a huge difference imo. They dont show in photos. I worked with a girl and she only realised I had them after 3 months!

Sorry for the bump, but I was wondering how you've adapted OP? I just got my bottom ones installed after a month of adjusting to the top ones so I'm going through the soreness again (not as bad).

It's crazy how much my top teeth have shifted already.

Whenever you tighten them, they'll be sore as a motherfucker.

Give it like a day or two and it'll wear off and the end result is wonderful. I never regret having braces.

edit: didn't realise this was old lol

Didn't want to make a new thread. Are orthodontists usually cool with filing your teeth. Noticed some chipping and would hope they're able to when I get these taken off
