But why someone would buy a Shuffle is beyond me. If it had a screen, I could understand it, but without the screen it's mostly useless for me. I don't want to listen to one long playlist or a random list, I want to hear albums or specially made playlists.

Sure. It might not be what you're looking for. I, on the other hand, find the Shuffle better suited to my needs than a regular iPod or any other player.

It has the most space for flash players for its price, and it has the ability to grab random songs off your computer so you don't know what you'll listen to until you listen to it. That is exactly the type of device I was looking for.

The Sandisk player I was describing earlier has the same storage (512 MB and 1 GB) and is the same price. Amazon has them here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...45661-8637708?v=glance&s=electronics&n=507846

and here respectively: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t..._2/102-1145661-8637708?v=glance&s=electronics

The 512MB version is $99 while the 1 GB version is $139. Much more versitile then the Shuffle imho.

Of course, if you've been buying music on iTMS, that won't play your purchased music unless you convert it first...

I would agree with you if it was going to be my ONLY purchase of a music player. However, as an adjunct to my 20 GB iPod, it makes perfect sense. I want something small, (relatively) cheap, and (relatively) indestructable for use at the gym which doesn't require me to jump through hoops to use the library I've ripped or bought in iTunes and doesn't require much of anything except for a play button. For that purpose, the shuffle is perfect.

Actually, that's what I want to do... I went with the mini cause I like the colors and of course between no screen and screen I prefer to have one, and it wasn't too much more, but the shuffle would have satisfied my needs greatly for having random music/language lessons to carry around to the library or wherever I'm doing my homework...

I just jumped for a 40GB photo. They were discounted due to the new range coming out, so was only £20 more than a 30. Plus being the old range, you get all the goodies, so you get the AV dock with phonos and a firewire cable. So now I can have the dock upstairs connected to my hifi which has saved me another £30.

BTW, anyone have any problems setting their ipod up? Mine just comes up with 'do not connect' for ever, and the ipod software thinks its formatting it but there is no HDD activity?

I thought this was pretty cool, from the front page of MacNN:
Newer, OWC debut high-capacity battery for 4G iPod
Newer Technology and OWC today introduced a new high-capacity 750mAH replacement battery for all fourth-generation ("4G") Click Wheel iPod models. The NuPower 4G battery model offers the "maximum capacity possible" with 20 percent more capacity than the factory-installed battery shipped with 4G iPod models. The company also sells 2100mAh and 1800mAh iPod batteries, which offer up to 70 percent more capacity for first- and second-generation models, and the 850mAh iPod battery, which offers 30 percent more capacity for third-generation models. NewerTech 4G 750mAh iPod battery, available for $26, includes non-scratch installation tools and instructions for installation. [print | email]*

Ah, the clam. Do you ever feel like it'll just suddenly snap close on your hands while using it?
Yeah, I know what you mean. It's just so bulky, it doesn't seem stable at all. The new laptops are freaking awesome though.

Yeah, definitely. I'm so glad Apple really got the minimalist look down.

I love Apple now. My iPod Mini arrived here this afternoon, about 4-5 days before I expected it.

I hate the Purolator guy, for coming to my dorm room while I was in class.

I love the person at the local Purolator office, for offering to send it to the university Student Union Building instead of leaving it far away where I couldn't reach it, or having to send it back to "home" and have my parents pick it up and risk not getting it before a cross-country trip.

Won't be here until tomorrow, but still.

I don't want to start a new thread cuz there's already been a million iPod topics, so I'll ask here...

Okay, so I'm torn between buying an iPod. I was going to get the 20 gig model and the 30 gig color model. I don't have a digital camera, plus I don't have album art, so it would be useless to me, but I guess an extra $50 for 10 gigs is worth it, right?

My concern is that the photo model doesn't come with a Firewire cable; my Macs don't have USB 2.0, only Firewire, so I'd have to get the Firewire separately... it does support Firewire, right? Just making sure.

And what's the deal with the dock? I'd like one, but doesn't it come with a wire? Do I actually have to buy that separately? Or does it just incorporate the one that comes with the iPod? I'm sorta confused.

Sorry for the noobish question advance.

I believe the new iPods still support Firewire, but Apple has begun to move to USB 2.0 to support Mac's and PC's more fully. Newer Mac's are shipping with USB 2.0 now as well. Picking up a Firewire cable should help, and of course you can use standard USB, it's just a lot slower to transfer a lot of files.

As for the Dock, one of the ways Apple has been able to cut prices on the newer models is to start taking some things out of the package. The Dock is one of the things to go. I think the remote is no longer in the box either. You'll have to buy those seperate if you want them.

As long as we're on general iPOd questions--

This morning my iPod seems to be missing all its music-- until I hook it up to a computer, which can see it all fine in iTunes. If I disconnect, it doesn't show any music again.

This happen to anybody else? What do I do, short of completely reloading it?

Try and find a 40GB photo somewhere at a discount. Mine was only slightly more than a 30GB, since apple discontinued it (John Lewis in the UK by the way). That comes with USB2 and firewire, and dock and audio cables - so I can attach it to my hifi in the bedroom.

The firewire is also used for the AC adapter though, so is the new one a different type of AC adapter?

A quick question...

Anyone know how long it takes to charge the battery on the iPod Mini the first time? I'm going to have a window of about two hours in which to charge the battery before I'd like to attempt to use it. In that period of time, I have to also upload all of my music. Am I right in thinking that there is no way in hell that I will accomplish that in two hours and just scratch the attempt altogether?

if your pc is cooperative, should be ok. Mine came with some charge, and two hours is enough for a 70-80% charge. and it'll update your collection and charge at the same time if you have a powered USB2 port (most recent pcs do)

Thanks, but I just learned that my period of time is now limited to 1 hour, so I won't bother. It'll be waiting when I get back, I guess.

Initial charge you're supposed to let it go the full 4 hrs too.

Apple has kept the wraps on their upcoming 5G iPods very very tight, with almost no information surfacing except scattered rumors. Today PortalPlayer announced the release of their next-generation PP5022 System-on-Chip, could this be the mark of the new 5G iPods? We think so.

Current 4G iPods, iPod Minis and iPod Photos use the PortalPlayer PP5020, a predecessor to the new PP5022. The PP5022 is specifically designed for enhanced features on hard-disk drive-based personal media players (iPod?) and offers triple the battery life of the PP5020. With the PP5022 chip, a 5G iPod would give you an estimated 36 hours playback, the iPod Photo around 45 hours, and the iPod Mini around 54 hours. This is a huge jump in battery life, which could make the future iPods even more irresistible than they are today.

The chip will also support a USB 2.0 host controller and transceiver; this will offer compatibility with peripheral devices such as digital still cameras and printers. You will be able to connect your 5G iPod to your digital camera, download the photos, then connect it to a printer and print your files.

In addition to USB 2.0 high-speed Device support, there is On-the-Go support; FireWire Link Layer integration; dedicated ATA-66 enhanced IDE bus supporting up to four devices; 4-bit SDMMC controller; consumer CD I2S port; 8/16-bit expansion IO; B/SIR infrared; TWC 3-wire controller; 4 channel, 8-bit ADC; 4 channel, 8-bit PWM/FM; up to 48 GPIOs; dedicated 16-bit memory controller for two banks of 2.5V or 1.8V SDRAM. I’m beginning to think this thing would be a waste in a 5G iPod, maybe put it in a smaller Mac Mini.

Performance on the PP5022 will top that of any chip in any media player, the architecture integrates dual 32-bit ARM7 CPUs with zero wait state and four-port 128 kilobyte iRAM and six DMA channels that connect through multiple high-speed internal buses. Simply put, it will offer peak performance on high demand operations while maintaining ultra low power consumption. The high-performance interface will increase download speeds, improve performance when transferring a large number of music files and when managing photos.

Apple of course has not confirmed or denied any of this information, they can however utilize as many of these features as they choose, if this indeed is the future chip for next generation iPods.

This would be amazing if it turns out true, even if it only has half the features listed. A potential battery-life of 54 hrs for an iPod!
