I have never played a Final Fantasy game ever, is it worth it to start now? Or too late??

Too late, the magic is gone. They can't even properly remake the ones that mattered without neutering them and removing the overworld.

While old and dated now, ff1 is still my favourite, mainly because of the music and the time travel. It's also relatively short and you can blast through it in 10-15 hours.

I tried it but it was too dated for me lol maybe I can revisit it after I finish the rest

No just move on, don't force yourself through something you're not enjoying.

Edit: I swear I was commenting on someone saying they have never finished a Pokémon game 🤷‍♂️

FF6 has the best visuals of the SNES, and a great soundtrack as usual, but in my opinion it kinda falls flat with its story and characters. Also, a little bit too depressing

Are you high ? This is the worst take ever in the history of FF takes. 6 has the best story of any FF and most games in general by a large margin. I think I'm going to put you on ignore just for such a travesty of a post. 😡

Only play the ones with GILGAMESH in it. The rest suck.

I'd start with FF5. Or you can just play FFIX. Once you play one you've played them all.

I should probably get off my ass and play FFX-2 since I like the job system and FFX-2 does it the best.

FF6, 7 ,9 and 10 was the golden age of Final Fantasy.
  • FF6 was a legend on SNES. The story of those older pre-ps1 games is nowhere near as complicated or well acted as FF7, but FF6 was taking steps to the right direction.
  • FF7 was the magnum opus. Medieval settings where abandoned, the characters on pre-rendered images and FMV where a gigantic steps on graphics, the characters where cool and the story was AAA novel worthy and relatable.
  • FF8 was ground breaking in terms of presentation and impressed back then, but in retrospect it is brought down by bizarre design decisions and a needlessly convoluted story full of plot holes.
  • FF9 was ages better, but suffered the wind waker syndrome of having cartoony graphics, plus it came at the end of the ps1's life. It's IMO one of the most complete, and the 2nd best FF game.
  • FF10 was the jump to the talkies, and had some amazing graphics and systems, but it was clear that they had to downsize their ambitions when they jumped to the ps2. The scope was smaller and many aspects where clearly incomplete. Still turned out great.
After that we had inaccessible online games, and needlessly convoluted games that seem to had lost a lot in production hell.
The FF7 remake was a step on the right direction, but it acts as you have already played the original, and its full of fanservice and teasing.

They're all good and they're all lacking in their own merit. The problem with anthology series is there is the distinct probability, nay, likelihood, of you (general you) disliking several entries. That revolving door of always having new gameplay mechanics and setting is kind of what I enjoy The most about it all, but it's a downside to some people. I won't bother you with another list. VI and VII are the best, XIII and XII are underrated. XV is hella fun on drugs. If not on drugs, it will drive you to find them.

I'm afraid it's too late

My favorites are IV, VI, and XIV [probably the best in series]. I think X and XIII [often panned] are both alright games too. Historically I really liked VIII as a child, but I don't think I Would like it as much now.

XV is pretty bad, but is somehow very emotional simultaneously.

Just start from I so that you have a better understanding and appreciation of the culmination of the series. Note that if you do start from I, there will be areas where the series improves while in some cases takes a step back.

4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, and 14 are the good ones. For spin offs Tactics is the GOAT for strategy games.

Start with 4. If you don't like it try 6. If you don't like it try 7. If you don't like that don't bother with the series.

Forgot I responded to this thread already... and it looks like you started with 4, but yes this is the good advice so you're well on your way. Suggest going through them all if you're so into 4.
