Would you be able to provide a bit more detail regarding your statistics? Practically everything I've heard (admittedly, not a whole lot) about propecia has been relatively good.

Besides the official trails carried out by Merck there are no other independent studies in relation to the incidence of side effects that I am aware of and thus I only have my own personal anecdotal evidence from the many cases I have read about on various internet message boards as well as my own personal experience to go on. I've heard of a few other studies, the prostate cancer one above and another one in which the drug was said to cause penile tissue to atrophy in rats...lovely.

You mentioned that decreased libido is somewhat uncommon, and usually returns to normal when off the drug - which I knew - but the extreme side effects occuring in great frequency are news to me.

I don't think they are in great frequency, but I do believe that they are far more common than Merck would have you believe; I find their 2% figure quite ridiculous to be honest, it just doesn't seem to be realistic. Now sure there are a lot of people who take it for years and seem to be fine, yet there are also many who experience problematic side effects while taking the drug and then there are those in which such side effects persist.

I'm 24 and my hair is great. No male in my family gene pool has gone bald. Both my grandfathers had their hair until death. Their brothers and fathers as well. None of my blood uncles are bald or have receeding hair. My father is 55 and has all of his hair, even though it's not as thick as it once was, he's not balding.

I'm guessing that I'll never go bald. Go me!

I'm not gonna say I can appreciate the amount of shit you've had to go through because of this drug, because honestly, no one can unless they've been in that sitatuation, but I do offer my condolences.

Still, I'm not jumping on the propecia = bad bandwagon yet.

The prostate cancer one appears to be a bit blown out of proportion according to the statistics I looked at. As for the rats, do you know what kind of dosage they were given? Whenever I hear someone cite tests on lab rats as a reason for a drug being bad, I think back to the 50s when scientists injected gram upon gram upon gram of MSG directly into rats until they died. After these experiments, they arrived at the conclusion that monosodium glutamate = omg bad, and people have been freaking out ever since (those with allergies certainly have a reason too). If there's one thing I know in life, it's that you can kill a rat by injecting enough of anything into its blood.

Yeah, it would be nice if there were some studies done by responsible third parties on the effects of propecia, so we could gauge whether Merck's telling the truth or not. I can say, that propecia has been approved both in America and Canada, and Canada historically is far more stringent with what comes into its drug line than America, so perhaps that's reassuring to those considering propecia.

Like any drug, the potential for side effects exist, and like any drug, your doctor needs to be heavily consulted before you begin taking medication. I'm not sure whether propecia's available over the counter in the States (isn't in Canada), but I'm distressed to hear how many people don't seek much medical advice, ignore medical advice, or accept medical advice that sounds a bit flimsy simply because they're eagre to solve their perceived problem (yeah, perhaps I'm dipping into a bit of irony here, but oh well).

Erectile Dysfunction is much worse than Hair Loss for me. Even if the chances of it happening are small.

I'd rather be bald and getting laid than have a full head of hair and ED.

No dude, you're 24 and you have a sweet avatar! Mike Novick rules the country.

And, another guy who is sensible enough to keep it shorn close to the skin!

You might go bald like I have. I started noticing I was getting thin at the temples at around eighteen. I was shocked. I knew that my great grandfather was completely bald at around 20, so I assumed I was in trouble. But at 25, I have some thinning at the temples in a widow's peak shape (like my grandfather from the other side) and thats about it. I'll probably be bald by 35, but that is much better than I assumed it would be. And screw that chemical shit. Women are much more attracted to confidence, rather than a few scraggly strands that I paid thousands just to hang on to. Spend it on a electric razor and new car.

If and when you shave your head, don't do it bald. Baldies just don't look good. Shave it real short. I think it's a misconception to think that the sight of a receded hair line is unattractive. Only when your hair is long and you don't want to accept it receding.

i'm in my middle 20s and my hairline is starting to recede, but slowly. When I had longer hair, I noticed that I would lose some chunks in the shower, but it didn't seem anything out of the ordinary. Now I'm scared though :( especially since my ethnic group is the one ethnic group that looks stupid bald.

I simply must know which ethnic group you think looks stupid bald :lol

I've been "going bald" since I was about 20. I'm 29 now and have much more hair than I thought I would at this time. However, I have friends that didn't start going bald until their mid-20's who have much less hair than I. I guess balding rates differ for everyone.

I started going grey when I was 16.

I'm 21 now. It's beginning to get noticable so I'm looking to dye it soon. And occassionally I'll get acne. Wtf is with that, acne and grey hair at the same time. What next, a miraculous 2nd puberty with erectile disfunction?
