Currently I am using a Linksys BEFW1154 ver. 3 802.11b wireless router. It is pretty old. I have a Wireless G nic in a comp on a floor directly above where the wireless router is, so it's not far at ALL.

When using the comp that's relying on CAT5 from the router, it's obviously much faster. However, it also seems like the wireless capability of this rotuer is way, way too slow. Not because it's just 11Mbps as my line probably isn't above 1.5Mbps, but the transfer is pretty sluggish.

Any suggestions on a router I should buy? What about those really compact D-Link ones?

I got a Netgear super G router off ebay last week. With the Netgear wireless card, you can get 105MBs instead of the usual 54MBs. The problem I had is before I got the Netgear card, I had some shitty 3rd party card that lost the signal.

I have a Linksys WRT54G - it's wireless and it also has 4 wired ports (I have my Xbox, PS2, etc hooked up via wires and my iBook is wireless). I haven't had any problems with it yet, it works great. I think it's around 60 bucks now, so it's not too bad price-wise either...

Netgear consistently gets better reception. I have the SuperG and a Linksys54G here at the house. The Linksys is a replacement (finally) for the first piece of shit that died within 90 days of purchase. The Netgear has problems with Cisco VPN connections. I'm not totally happy with either one of them, but given a choice I would go with the Netgear because it has the range, the speed, and the more straightforward configuration UI.

I personally would suggest getting whatever is cheap in the store where you are. Set it up at home and if you aren't comfortable with it within 30 days take it back.

You can get Dlink stuff pretty cheap just about anywhere, so don't think you have to buy from newegg to get a good deal.

All the D-Link products I've owned have long term quality issues. Like around the 1 year mark.

But Linksys, Netgear, D-Link you should be fine for the most part.

Yeah well my linksys likes to "jam up". Like, it will randomly reset itself. I thought it was my card, but I've used both linksys and RaLink WNICs - same result. So I looked at my router while streaming video on the comp connected to the wireless network, and soon enough the linksys router's reset lights came on and the router made a high pitched ring.

I've only had it for a couple years, too. Piece of crap...
