"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

pseudocaesar said:
What is the best mobo that is compatible with my CPU (Phenom II X4 940 Black), is it compatible with AM3? Im getting Win 7 and figure I will get some new Ram and get DDR3 (I have like DDR2 800 atm).

The 940 doesn't support DDR3 RAM.

Think that the wait is over, after like one month and half (or three weeks even, not sure), my 5850 is already on transit and will come today or tomorrow. Finally I will start buidling my new PC.

Wanted to keep it under 600 euros using some old pieces, but I finally decided against reusing a HD as primary and get a new one for no specific reason other than wanting all the key pieces to be new. It´s going to be 1Tb and half (which I find hilarious as I my actual computer has 320 GB and I have only used half of them). And I had to buy Windows 7, because I found that my Vista just have one license and I plan to keep it using it in the old computer, so it adds to the price. I will just be able to reuse the DVDs and that's it.

Pretty excited for it.

I"m looking for a solution to a problem I'd like to solve....

If I want to hook up my computer to my home theater receiver via optical to get 5.1 (or 7.1 in the future possibly), could I buy a dedicated sound card to get this done?

Right now I have been using the optical output on my 8800GT and it is not outputing in 5.1 that way.

If so, does any have any suggestions or know a starting to point for researching which one to buy? Thanks!

ATI's 4000 and 5000 series cards output video + 7.1 audio right over a single HDMI cable, if you feel like upgrading your GPU at the same time, you can probably skip buying any kind of sound card (which is a waste of money imo), if you have a way of passing the audio from your TV to your receiver, which you probably do.

This was one of the nice features that put me towards ATI's card a while back when I was deciding what to get.

You want something with a Dolby Digital live encoder, so yeah, a dedicated soundcard is probably going to be the way to go. An ASUS Xonar would probably be what you want.

Anyone have any other suggestions for a decent PC gamepad? Ive been using the Logitech Rumblepad 2 and its decent but I started using it with PCSX2 last night and the analog sticks dont seem to feel right in games like Shadow of the Colossus. Theyre too loose or something.

Is there anything out there thats pretty much a replica of a PS2 controller? Are those PS2 to PC controller adapters reliable enough? If so, I may just buy one of them.

awesome...I'll look into that as a starting point. Thanks

So the sound wouldn't be encoded properly to pass through over the ATI card? I'm a little confused.

He asked for audio over optical, ATI's cards only support audio over HDMI. To get multi channel audio over optical it needs to be encoded into either DD or DTS and to do that in real time, you need a sound card that supports that.

Im getting some odd issues with Dirt 2 on my 5850. The issue is pretty much identical to what was going on with the Witcher back when the 5850 first came out.

The Witcher issues carried on until I found someone linking to a Dirt 2 hotfix released by ATI in November that apparently corrected the Witcher problems as well. I downloaded the hotfix for Dirt 2 and it fixed the Witcher but theres still Dirt 2 issues.

Heres the Witcher video to give you an idea of whats going on in Dirt 2 as well.

Anyone else having similar issues?

The hotfix is outdated now, the 9.12 drivers from ATI are newer (and the 10.1 drivers due out in a week or two will replace those). I didn't have those issues with DiRT 2 or The Witcher on my 5870 before or after the hotfix though.

I actually shouldve mentioned that I am using the latest drivers too yet the issue still persists. I found a pic that someone else uploaded about the problem: http://i49.tinypic.com/35ndo5i.png

Would it be a good idea to completely clear my graphics drivers and try a fresh install of 9.12? Whats the best/safest way to do this?

I'm not sure, it can't hurt (hopefully). The way I installed the updates is I just first uninstalled everything with the uninstall tool, the drivers, CCC, everything. Windows restarts, then I run the new drivers and they put everything back in again, and one more restart then it's done.

Those are the kind of things I had going on with my last graphics card, which I think had faulty RAM (those weird infinity lines), but they occurred in all my games, so I knew it was the card and not some bug.

That's pretty annoying though, I hope you get it straightened out!

Thanks. Ill give it a shot tonight.

I had faulty RAM but got it exchanged and the RAM now is perfect. Dirt 2 is my only issue too. ..so far anyways. I know for a fact that the Witcher runs perfectly since I put in 35 hours after patching it without any problems.

Just finished mounting my computer in the HAF 932, this case is amazing, I'm now oc'ing the cpu a bit :D

By the way, I have now a 8800GTS (320MB), and I'm thinking about upgrading to a XFX GTS250 (1024MB) and giving the 8800 to my gf.

The GTS250 is about 115€, it's a good choice ? What are my other options in this price range?

My first try with a 4890 gave me graphical errors randomly (green snow), not all the time. From this I conclude it is possible to have faulty hardware that doesn't affect every game.

No, not a big enough upgrade imo. Aim for a 4870/GTX 260/5770 class GPU instead.

Why not just use a PS3 controller? Mine works like a charm.

Yeah, I know is not a big upgrade, but I'm already happy with my 8800gts, so it's just wanting to give my gf this card and buying a slightly better one :D

This should work:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812270280

As for male and female, you want a male displayport, and probably a female DVI, but you could also get a male DVI and plug the cable directly into the monitor. Just depends on your setup.

I've been doing a little searching, but details seem to be scarce. Anyone here know when we should be expecting a slew of (hopefully slim and battery efficient) core i3 notebooks? Apparently Best Buy is selling an Asus machine with one unofficially.

Quick question. My dad wants to buy a new PC but it has an integrated intel graphics chip or something like that. How hard is it to disable that and replace it with a good graphics card? How much money/time/effort are we looking at?

Not very hard
Under 10 minutes
$40-50 if he does not play games (See 8400/8500,9400/9500, low end ATi 4 series)
$100 for a good midrange card (that hopefully can be powered by the Power supply that comes with it)

The two problems you'll likely face is that the power supply will not be big enough to run a good graphics card and if it's a small form factor the case might not have enough room for some of the bigger cards. A new powersupply might run $50 or so.

Buy a PC that actually meets your needs, rather than one that needs upgrading from the get go.

I don't know if anyone here is interested, but I was able to get my Audigy 2 ZS working with my Yamaha receiver with a stereo 1/8" male (headphone) -> RCA male (RW) cable. The red plug carried the digital signal. The Dolby Digital Live pack allows you to encode everything in 5.1, including games. I bought a DVI->HDMI for video and now I am able to enjoy PC gaming on a big comfy couch.

You can buy PS2 -> USB converters that work great and cost about ten bucks. As well, if you're on a 32-bit OS, you can use a PS3 controller.

That's not mobile! It's 9 freakin lbs and has a battery life of an hour. If you only play WoW, get something cheaper and smaller.
An hour battery life with normal use or gaming? My dads core 2 duo dell with on board graphics lasts an hour while gaming. I'd be plugged in for that.

Weight doesn't bother me.

I just want to play it on max. It's laggy on my desktop: 3500+, 1gb ram, 7600GT

how about upgrading to a new DIY desktop and small laptop/netbook for school work?

WoW is really old. You could max it with a much lower spec'd laptop than the one you chose.

And the spec sheet said 1hr 30. And those are usually for normal use :-/ (though, it seems like it would be able to get 2hr to me.)

Is their a performance difference between Core 2 Duo and Pentium Dual-Core processors?

About 10% clock for clock between a 45nm Core 2 and 45nm Pentium dual core.

If this is a new build though, stay the hell away from socket 775.

------------------------

In other news I just bought a used Q6600 a few hours after my student loan came in.

Beans on toast for the rest of the month it is then! :D

Anyone in the UK looking for an awesome clocking (3.6ghz with ease) E5200?

Okay, I think I'm going to forego the Acer Revo route and build a good HTPC that will also allow me to keep up on PC games and MMOs (MMOs especially). I would like to go Micro ATX route with a good looking case that wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb.

1) How feasible would something like this be assuming I would be playing on a 1080p TV/monitor)? If this a smart move or would I be giving up too much?

2) How much am I looking at if I can manage to reuse my DDR2 6400 RAM and hard drives? Including a BR drive as well.

Installed my PSU, no idea if the old one really was broke, but after fannying around with some stuff and resetting the BIOS again my machine now works! Shame I should be studying for exams though.

Do a lucky dance for me PC-GAF, or whatever is applicable in regards to Best Buy, as I have to go DVI cable hunting there tomorrow.

Damned ASUS included "DVI cables" with each monitor for my new PC alright---just not ones with 24 pins. From looking at Newegg, it appears to be some damned male/female styled issue---so as you can imagine there went my plan to try out at least one monitor and put in the hours to get Win 7 64 installed as the next step! :lol (We got it to a boot screen after assembly yesterday, so I was stoked!)

Couple that with my nice seeming mouse being stolen upon a great decision by UPS to leave it at a doorstep in an apartment complex, which'll take 10-15 business days claims wise for Newegg to mail another one out if all goes well, and my modern PC bits and times are thusly delayed a bit longer. :(

He just means that they are a bad value right now if you're shopping for a new PC/CPU, considering what's on the market. Best to go for a Phenom or I5 in most cases.

They're still reliable and will offer good performance if you're an existing owner.

I haven't ran into any issues on my 5970. Had a 5870 before and no issues there either. Whatever issues he's running into must be from a borked driver install or at worst defective hardware.

The game plays, runs, and is excellent on the 5700/800 cards. It's rally heaven, even if it's scattered with all sorts of flair. If you're remotely interested in rally/racing games, definitely don't skip it by, it's a great game for free.

It's one of the few games, along with Risen and a couple others that have significantly better performance on ATIs cards compared to nVidia's, which part of me thinks is some of the reason those games aren't more popular.

Yeah I"m loving the dirt 2 I got for free. It really needs to be played with at least a 360 gamepad though. The thought of having keyboard controls was nice but they are basically unusable.

I can finally play crysis! but goddamn I'm terrible at it.

Hey guys, I am looking to buy a good new monitor to power up my current HP laptop (the screen is fucked on it), and to use when I build my PC this summer. Looking at a 25.5" and bigger. Only problem is I need one with at least 1080p, HDMI input, and that tilts forward (up and down, not left to right).

Any good brands people have seen/used? Looking to spend as little as possible obviously, but want a high quality with low MS.

Figured this would be the spot to ask. Thanks. PMs please!

So my friend and I just pulled the trigger on this:

Phenom 2 X4 955 Deneb black @ $166
XFX 5770 1GB @ $180
GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P AM3 @ $80
Corsair XMS3 4GB DDR3 SDRAM @ $93
W.D. Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM @ $75
LITE-ON dvd rw @ $30
Antec Sonata III 500 Black (500w PSU) @ $110

Total: $734

already had a copy of windows 7, sooo yeah. This is the first time building a PC for either of us, what does PC-gaf think? we did our research, but is anything posted not compatible? the main thing I'm worried about is the PSU, but Tech Report recommended that case. everything else looks ok to me.

1) Does anyone have any recommendations when it comes to wireless cards for desktop PC's? I'm in the process of building a new machine, and I need it to be wireless.

Not sure if I should go for the cheap route, or if it's truly worth it to spend $50 on a wireless card.

Our connection is 802.11G using WEP (64-bit I do believe), so nothing fancy there.

2) I'm currently looking at a Core i5-750 and a Core i7-860. Right now, the Core i5 is looking a little better due to price, but was wondering other people's opinions on the two. Is the i7-860 worth it in the long run or is it not that much more bang for the buck?

Alright so I have decided I am definitely going to build a computer this year. I have been out of the PC game for a long time and having built one in years.

So I know the i7 is the best of the best at the moment, and is probably going to be one of the most future proof processors.

How are the newest AMD Phenom II quad cores? I see that even the high end ones are actually cheaper than the lowest i7 CPUs.

Anyone on here put together a Phenom II setup recently and how is it treating you?

I am hoping to build something that will keep up with the latest games for a few years at least. Also hoping to keep it under $1000 dollars for everything. No need for a monitor.
