"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

Wooo my new Q8300 is in and it runs way cooler than me E6600. The E6600 with the Zalman 9700LED idled at 45C under stock speeds. This one idles at 35. Much more reasonable.

Time to see if I can OC this thing. My Northbridge is likely going to be my barrier.

God damn this cooler is amazing. Stressing all 4 cores with 2 instances of Orthos. Load temps are 38, 43, 37, 38. :lol

I don't understand how my load goes up by like 3C over idle.

How loud is that cooler? I just got a Scythe Shuriken because it's a mere 35dB under load, but it cools my CPU less effectively than the stock cooler.

I feel that for coolers you're either in the market for a quiet one or an effective one. I'd just like to know what I missed out on as yours looks pretty good.

I'm on stock cooling and I want to put the 4th core on my 720BE instead of OCing. Right now I'm at 3.2GHz with 1.275V. I have already tested my 4th core for stability, but I don't know what voltage to use.

It's a 120mm fan spinning at 1400rpm and keeping my temps at 38C. It's extremely quiet (could run it at much lower speeds...but it's basically the same speed as my case fans right now).

Anyways I'm hitting a wall...and my northbridge isn't the problem. My problem is my memory. I have 2 good sticks and 2 shitty stick...problem is my good sticks are just 2x1GB. :(

I can't adjust my RAM ratio for some reason. Also, loosening the timings makes it so my computer doesn't boot. I'll attribute these problems to Q8300 + 1333fsb only being supported by my beta firmware.

Could you elaborate on this? I'm currently finding it hard to decide between the 955, the 965 and the i5 750.
Here in Germany the prices are:

945 C3: 128 Euro
955 C3: 132 Euro
965 C3: 150 Euro
i5 750: 160 Euro

I've read that in most benchmarks the 965 performs comparable to or better than the i5 750. So why is the i5 750 the better deal?

I should mention that I'm building the PC primarily for gaming (Superior PC Versions and Dolphin/PCSX2 emulators).

Because that's complete BS perhaps?

If you're going with AMD then the 925 and 955 are the CPUs to consider, but if you've got the money for an Intel setup then go with an Intel setup.

I can imagine. Big fan + slow speed often results in low noise.

I just checked out the dimensions of it. It wouldn't fit in my case (too tall), so I think I made the right choice. Thanks!

What is the best 1TB HDD I can get for £80 or below? It'll be for 'everything' (ie, Games, OS, etc).

Samsung F3.

If its stable under your current voltage then use that. You can probably get away with raising it to 1.3v if you can't get it stable under that but don't go any further.

Quick (and potentially stupid) question...can I run Rivatuner while CCC is running or should I uninstall CCC altogether? I'm a little hesitant to uninstall CCC because I've got dual monitor setup and there were some settings I had to mess with under CCC to get it running properly..

Ofcourse you can, what made you believe you'd need to uninstall CCC?

Did u try upping the voltage to the RAM? And did u go out and buy that new CPU like immediately after seeing your board supported it? :D

I just wanted to mention in this thread: GPU coolers are awesome. Way under-rated compared to CPU coolers.

I picked up an Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo and it is fantastic, aids in overclocking beautifully. This particular model comes with pre-applied MX-2 and, get this, 6 years of warranty. I'll hopefully still be rocking this thing in 2016 with DirectX 14 cards. :D

And of course there are other options such as the Scythe Musashi, and I believe Zalman has a solution as well. The only negative 4890 users need to consider is that the supplied VRM heatsinks suck, so it's best to stick with the stock ones.

Yes and yes.

It's weird...upping to 2.0V makes it even more unstable. Thing is, I shouldn't have to up the voltage at all...I'm running within specification and Orthos still gives me rounding errors.

I'm waiting for a someone to buy my notebook's Core 2 Duo, so I can finally get myself a quad core. I'm so ready to ascend.

thats awesome, about the CPU that is, not the memory. It could be the beta bios for sure though. Or maybe back off on the timings? (nevermind, i see you tried that)

I have a black border all around my screen for some reason. Card is an ATI HD5770, is there a setting I need to tick or something to fill my screen?

Change to your native desktop res, if that doesn't work, mess with the overscan, and scaling options.

I don't have any of the overscan options. I had a Radeon 9550 before this with DVI out and it had the overscan option in the Catalyst Control Center. Why doesn't this one?

Nevermind, got it. Fucking stupid thing.

things are not going well. i got everything together but once I hit the power button the computer turns on, the fan turns on, then everything turns off after a couple seconds, and then back on and off. it does this until i unplug it.

Does the screen start to POST or do you receive no display?

okay i missed a connection called atx 12v 2x4.

i'll connect that and report back if it fixed the problem or not.

Usually failing to boot with a new builder is due to failing to supply power to both power inputs on the motherboard. I assume i5's still require two power connections to their MBs.

Although I've still got shitty RAM, it's mostly my fault.

I had 4 sticks, 2x1GB sticks, and 2x2GB sticks.

2x1GB pair: DDR2-6400 4-4-4 @ 2.1V
2GB pair: DDR2-6400 6-6-6 @ 1.8V

Basically, my 1GB pair wasn't getting enough voltage (even though I was running at the loosened timings of 6-6-6-18). I fixed the stability issue by taking out my 1GB pair. Since it's such shitty RAM though, I still can't break much past 3.0GHz.

Oh well...I still got a huge performance boost for a measily $160 CDN. I wasn't willing on plopping down anything for the current i5 systems (not a big enough performance difference to justify $450), so this was perfect for me. Should serve me for 1-2 more years now, until upgrading the entire system becomes justifiable.

ahh, well, that was the problem. power is no longer fluctuating!

now i just need to hook a display into it and see if i get anything on screen.

Hopefully the heart attack is over. This is something i've done myself :P

My system appears to be almost perfectly balanced according to the Windows Experience Index. :D

I need to figure out how to get my chassis fans and CPU fans running slower.

CPU fan is running at 1400RPM, and 2 of my chassis fans are running at 1200RPM. My last chassis fan is connected directly to the power supply with a variable resistor and running at 900RPM.

Since I'm getting load temps of less than 45C, I think I can manage to bring all my fans down to 900RPM and still stay within normal temps. I want to see how quiet I can make this.

Is there a good front-bay fan controller that can power 4 fans?

Okay so I downloaded speed-fan.

Holy shit. :lol

My fans are running at 400rpm. I can't even hear them. My system is staying at 50C. :lol

Wow.

This is something else new to me: HDMI audio. I'm playing Mirror's Edge and not hearing the voices, only the surround channels, I think. Is it supposed to be outputting in Dolby Digital or something? I'm outputting to a receiver.

My god damned mini fridge is louder than my PC now. :lol

I gotta completely recommend this Scythe Mugen 2 CPU HSF. It's absolutely insane. You could probably passively cool a stock clocked quad core. I turned on Asus Q-Fan control, and set it to "Optimal". Never needs to spin faster than 500rpm, which is completely inaudible.

Does your receiver support multi channel LPCM over HDMI? Have you configured within the Windows control panel for surround sound? Got the latest realtek HDMI audio driver?

Yes, no, and just the one that came on the disc with the mobo. I'll check for new drivers.

GPU fan is the hardest to get right. I'm going to try to maintain the lowest speed possible so that I stay below 85C under full load (Furmark stressing). The automatic control brings it over 50% speed which is unbearable.

Too bad there are no good and cheap cooling solutions for the GTX 275. =\

edit: at 35% fan speed I'm getting 87C. I can live with that.

Do you have updated drivers installed? Shouldn't be that low.

Yes. I got like 7.7-7.9 with the older drivers when I first booted up win7. Pretty sure the newer drivers break the test.

It's been about ten days since I posted about my sister's build, back on page 23. Truthfully I haven't really had a lot of time to shop on it, but we did stop at the local Microcenter and see what they had for prices and availability, since it's nice to be able to return parts locally when possible.

She did have a few hesitations about the build suggested by Brain_Stew. We looked at an OEM Lite-On DVD drive they had there, and externally they seemed a little flimsy. Are they reliable, or were they suggested with a more disposable mindset? (Buy cheap, swap it out when it eventually dies.)

She wants to push a little harder on the specs, since she's getting the new PC as a gift, and can't really count on having the money to upgrade later. One thing we saw was that this processor was recommended by Brain_Stew, Microcenter had this one for $189, any issues with switching to this processor instead over the one recommended? It looked like it would still be compatible with the same motherboard.

This video card (HIS H577FM1GD Radeon HD 5770 1GB) was recommended, but it wasn't available as a 5770 in-store by HIS. There was one by XFX, this one I believe. The reviews aren't the best, though. Is XFX usually okay, or a brand to avoid?

She didn't hate the case mentioned, but I don't think she was thrilled by it. Shopping for a case on our own, what should we make sure is there for the Phenom build? Any considerations of size, slots, etc?

Thanks for any help you might provide. I know I'm asking some basic things, but I figure better to be sure first instead of buying expensive components, then trying to return them when they won't work together. Also, we're still looking for (HD) capture card or netbook recommendations, if anyone has them. We did get the monitor while on sale, good timing too since hers died the morning of the day it arrived.

Im sorry if this is a bit off topic but I just had an amazing experience with my new computer and I wanted to share it.

So recently I built a pretty solid core i7 machine. I've been really happy playing crysis maxed out and all that but something just happened that really floored me. I encoded Apocalypse Now, a 3 hour movie, in under 2 minuets. Now, I've been encoding DVDs for some time. I've always preferred to have a HTPC over a typical disk based system. The first DVD I encoded was The Fifth Element. I remember because I was very excited to have figured it out and gotten it to work correctly. Keep in mind it wasn't as easy and straight forward as it is today. Anyway, this was done on a Comaq P2 266 and it took, I shit you not, almost two weeks per disk. So again, I just encoded a three hour movie in under two minutes.
Oh
My
GOD!

When it finished I was in shock. The report said it was encoding at an average of 4000 frames per second. I did the math and that checks out.

30 fps X 60 second per minute = 1,800 frames per minute x 60 minutes = 108,000 frames per hour x 3 hours = 324,000 / 4000fps encoding = about 81 seconds or under 2 min.
Amazing.
