Not at all. Was somehow under the impression the 940 was just like the 945, 955, etc. Scratch that.Schmattakopf said:Better CPU but is it worth going back to AM2+?

There wouldn't be a point. Memtest 86+ was one of the another apps that would detect and read all 6gb of ram, but would only state that 4gb was available... And it was always the A1 channel that would be the one with the problem. The same stick of ram would not boot in A1, but would in B1 and C1. A quick test passed all three sticks anyways.Cipherr said:Christ you have the same mobo I picked, the same ram, and the same cpu cooler.
But anyway yeah it was probably the board. All I did was plug them in, set it to XMP profile in bios (which exactly like you said auto configured the ram speed and timings) and of course set it to achi for the ssd and install of windows. You shouldnt have had to manually touch any settings in the bios other than getting the XMP profile loaded. I didnt at least.
And everything is fine, so its either a bad stick of ram or your mobo. Christ that would blow chunks if its your ram and not the board since you already sent it off. Id run LONG 8 hour memtests (while your at work 3 days in a row) on the sticks one by one. One stick at a time since your waiting on the RMA anyhow. Just to make sure.
Crunched said:My Samsung plasma gets lots of image retention with a PC connected. If you're using it mainly for gaming, it should be alright. Leaving it at the desktop for any length of time may cause icons and the task bar to stay on screen for a while.
I guess it's no worse than static HUDs, though. And honestly, my TV is starting to retain images from just about anything that stays on there for longer than three seconds.
I'd still recommend plasma for gaming.
That can't be right. What are you monitoring temps with? Which case are you using and is anything obstructing the HDD?darthbob said:Any tips on how to cool down a hot hard drive?
Mine gets to like 52C on load.
I'm not familiar with HDD temps but the obvious solutions would be to move it away from your video card (if possible), or add an extra fan? I guess try to give it more room?darthbob said:Any tips on how to cool down a hot hard drive?

That will do it. Your temps sound right in line with what you'd get with high ambient or a build with poor airflow.darthbob said:No, it's correct, Speccy and Speedfan both reported it after a gaming session.
My case doesn't have an intake fan or anything, and I moved away anything obstructing it.
I've tried moving it around, and nothing changed.

This is at idle.
I've got three fans. One on top exhausting, one on the side, intaking, and one in the back exhausting, although, I never feel much air coming from that one.

You have a negative pressure setup which only works when the exhausts are effective. You didn't state which case it is. Assuming you have a standard ATX tower design, I'd recommend moving that side fan to a front intake position. Preferably a low one. If your GPU temps seems to rise a great deal, you're just going to need to buy at least one additional fan, or source one/some from another build.
Can't overstate the importance of airflow and proper cooling to the performance, durability and lifespan of your components.
darthbob said:I think I'll buy a new case for my birthday. Gonna get a HDD fan for like $5 too, to keep things moderately cooler in the interim.
How's the CM690 II?
Cipherr said:Sexcellent. In pretty much every way. Youll get your airflow, youll get nice space and a good design. You'll get dust filters everywhere. Youll get like 3 included fans, and room for a billion more. Just an excellent case.

so of course, the first thing i did after installing windows 7 was run a prime95 torture test, and the results were interesting...bear in mind, the top fan the case usually brings is removed to fit all the parts, but there's a custom water cooling kit within. to recap, specs are i5-760, GigaByte GA-H55N-USB3, 4GB DDR3, ATI 6870 (offline at the moment so i gotta go get the drivers, runs like crap right now), 1.5 TB HDD etc.
temps per speedfan...idle:
Temp 1 - 54 C
Temp 2 - 25
Temp 3 - 27
Core 0 - 23
Core 1 - 23
Core 2 - 23
Core 3 - 23
after 1 hour on blend test:
Temp 1 - 82 C
Temp 2 - 25
Temp 3 - 88
Core 0 - 84
Core 1 - 83
Core 2 - 80
Core 3 - 81
i don't know what each temp is referring to specifically, and i don't expect anything to really run the system at 100% much, but...should i be worried? no idea what a good range is here, or if my idle is too high. bear in mind, its a small form function PC with a lotta parts crammed in there and vents all over. i will most likely want to overclock this chip to @ 4ghz at some point for dolphin use, so i'm hoping that's within a safe range here. thoughts?
*edit just noticed intel says TCASE (?) is 72.7C, so uh...good?
That seems really hot under load. I would definitely figure out what's wrong with the cooling setup before you do anything.IrishNinja said:my SG-07 showed up today, GAF!so happy. haven't had a chance to crack it open yet, i do intend to take pics of the wiring they did for -feist- and any other interested parties.

There's a firmware patch that fixes the "70% fan utilization at idle" problem you're referring to. Check your 6870's manufacturer website. It should be there. The patch fixed my 6850 (XFX) right up...IrishNinja said:alright, still looking into my cooling issue - but now that ive got the right drivers for my 6870, the fan's crazy-loud, even at idle. i read a few links saying i should take it down to < 50% speed, but the Catalyst Control Center it bundles with gives no such options...how do i manually adjust the fan speed?
also, if anyone has ideal settings for gaming from within CCC (as far as AA and other affects), lemme know. i know i gotta play with a bit, just wondering if there's anything i should focus on/negate.
