I can't get over the changes from running my games in 1440x900 on lowest to the sane on highest.

Detail, physics, particles, hdr, like different games.

Can't wait to play more DoW2 next to check out CoH.

I'm in love with my new pc, just wish steam would hurry up!

So who here knows what laptop mice are the shit?

it would have to be fairly small but not micro-size, i wanna do some gaming with this thing.

Also, is it better to go with my laptop's internal bluetooth? (it's got whatever the newest bluetooth is, 2.1?) or should I go with something that has a tiny bluetooth usb dongle?

both the 32 and 64 bit versions are slow. just opening a 1600x1200 image and using the lasso is slow. It's not even real time! There's a lag between the time i press the button and the lasso takes effect. CS4 can't be this unoptimized :(

I did change the scratch disk to other drives, increasing the memory usage and updating to 11.01 but that didn't help.

Hey guys, how far behind is gaming performance on laptops to comparable priced desktops. I know there will always be a sizable gap, but is it better now? I'd like a good gaming laptop for under $1000, is this possible or wishful thinking?

Just looking at Bestbuy.com, most $900-1000 "gaming" laptops have either a nVidia 330M or Radeon HD 4670 in them. From the few benchmarks I can find, that seems to be comparable to something like a 8800GT.

For under $1000 you can easily buy a laptop that will keep up with all current gen games. You just have to make sure you buy something a descent dedicated GPU. For under $1000 you'll probably be looking at machines with a Nvidia GT 240M / GT 335M or maybe an ATI Radeon HD 4650 which will probably pull in 30+ FPS on high settings for most games in my experience... much more for lower settings obviously and even more if you stick with a modest sized laptop without a huge screen resolution.

The $900 asus have GTX 260s in them, the 330 is a pretty weak laptop card... the 260s performance is double that

is equivalent to a "9800M GTX with slightly higher clock rates of 550/1375/950 against 500/1250/800. It is produced in 55nm. Therefore, it is not similar to the Desktop GTX 260 but somewhat similar to the 9800 GT."


"The performance of the GT 330M should be similar to the GeForce GT 240M and therefore located in the middle class in the range of the Mobility Radeon HD 4650."

I'm looking at either Logitech's new Marathon Mouse (uses the newer unifying small USB nub) or their older VX Nano (also has a small USB nub, but not the unifying one) for my netbook...whatever I can find the best deal on either.

But I'm kinda leaning more towards the Marathon based on its claims of being able to run on a single set of AA batteries for about 3 years.

Yeah, sometimes the tax hit is worth it for the instant gratification. Newegg is damn amazing, though. My stuff shipped out yesterday and should be here tomorrow afternoon. That's record time. Especially for the assortment of stuff that I ordered. All one box apparently too.
 
Wow, this whole numbering thing with laptop GPUs is confusing. So a 260M is better than a 330M, but not a 335M?

So basically, focus on GPU 1st when looking at laptops? Obviously the other components matter, but I can see how that would be the obvious benchmark.
 
Okay, so now that all the components have been ordered, I've been reading up as much as I can on the process in general so I don't mess anything up.

But I can't seem to figure out a couple of questions:

1. Grounding - Seems like each guide I read says something different. Some tell me to touch the unpainted part of the case. Others tell me to install the PSU, plug it in, make sure the switch is off - and then I can use the case to ground myself. Some places talk about mats. Others talk about touching any bare metal whatsoever.

So I would like to know: Is it enough to just touch the case? If I get one of those anti-static straps, what do I connect the end of it to? The case? Are there any sort of special gloves I should wear? I just want a simple way to know FOR SURE that I'm not building up a charge.

2. Installing the CPU - I've never done this, so I want to know what to expect. Specifically, should I expect to have to push it into place? Or will I just be dropping it in? Can anyone describe that process in a little more detail? (If it matters, the CPU is an i5 750.)

That's about it for now. Any advice would be appreciated.

About static: don't sweat it. People make too big a deal out of it. I casually open up my PC and tinker with it all the time, and i've had zero problems. Most advanced thing I ever did was take apart a graphics card while in a dressing gown. The only thing I would take some care with is RAM, but a lot of the upper-market RAM modules have oodles of plastic protecting them.

With regards to anti-static measures, touching an un-painted part of the case is sufficient. Some guides say leave the PSU plugged into the mains, but do not do this as it might kill you. I tend to build in an area right next to a radiator, as the pipes usually head straight into the ground - I just give them a tap every 5 minutes or so. T-shirt and jogging pants are probably the best thing to wear, if we were to start getting anal about it. Open some windows too.

And the CPU should just drop into place. There is often a little something to tell you the correct orientation. If you have to push it in, you're doing it wrong.
 
Jut got a new monitor/tv combo, and I want to go about calibrating it but no calibration settings for my set are online. I'm using a LG M237WD.
 
So I just built a new computer, and noticed something kind of strange, but I haven't been able to isolate it yet. i7 920, 5850, Corsair 650TX, Gigabyte X58A.

I have noticed in a few games, mostly during loading screens or menus like Crysis for example, a high pitched whine/squeal coming from either the PSU or the GPU. It doesn't sound like a fan, but rather something electrical.

The question is, why is it happening during things like menus and loading screens, but it goes away once in the game?

Do all your games and playing HD videos work sweet? it could be a messy install of CS4 so maybe try reinstalling it with only photoshop. I know CS4 was weird for me the first time, crazy brush lag, brush strokes updating really slow until I reinstalled it. Also update your video card drivers before you reinstall, and see if turning GPU acceleration on and off makes things better.
 
Looking at around $150 shipped, probably $140 if you wanted them sold now.

Could be coil whine from the 5850 or the Corsair. Don't know if that is groudns for an RMA though.

Last night I changed out the processor in my PC. Removed the motherboard, video card. All on carpet with socks and sweatpants on in a house with low humidity when it was 20 degrees F outside. In my 10 years of working on PC's I've never killed anything with static.

Don't worry so much about it.

As for the CPU you open put up on the little metal arm and drop the processor in. There should be a small triangle on one of the corners. Make sure it goes where it says it goes in the socket. Pull the arm down and hook it under it's little metal holder. I'll let others tell you how to deal with those stupid intel push pins on the heat sink. I use a Zigmatech heat sink and bracket myself.

I had actually just come to ask about question 2. I'll be getting an i5 750 tomorrow as well. So, thanks for asking! :D

Additionally, is there any special way to apply thermal paste on a Hyper 212+? I ask since it's a direct heat-pipe contact or whatever. I hear 4ghz is pretty feasible with an i5. What should I set my sights on? Any good guides for overclocking an i5?

I bought a few fans and a new dvd drive. I also have 5 western digital 250 gb sata drives laying around that I'm going to use with this pc. The plan is to have a decent computer for around 600 bucks because mine is dying and really old. If I'm hoping it will be able to play Team Fortress 2 and stream movies to my xbox and be my dvr unit for windows media center. I have a tv card from my old pc that should still work fine. Staying with vista ultimate which ran poorly on my old pc. My parts should be here on 25th and hoping it will install nice and plug into my tv and my 17 inch dell monitor that work gave me. :) If I went over kill on something and not on something else let me know. I'm thinking the video card might be on the weak side but i only had 600 dollars to spend and i spent 630 dollars shipped.

Can you cancel your order? I've got tbh, those are some pretty horrendous choice of parts. $600 can buy you a quad core CPU that isn't on a dead end platform and a GPU that is around 4x faster than the one you chose, so yeah, I don't think that's the best of $600 I've ever seen.

Edit: Actually you're going to have to cancel your order, you bought memory that isn't compatible with your motherboard. I suggest just starting all over again, now that you've got to make adjustments anyway. I also don't think stuffing 5 old, small and slow drives into a new PC is a particularly good idea. I'd just stump up the cash and replace the lot with a single 2TB drive, they're pretty damn cheap these days.

Ok well I can stop the order but fuck now I'm not sure what I can do with 600 bucks. My old pc is really dated and the still rocking agp card which the port for the agp video card is dying. So how about this what is the best bang for the buck motherboard / processor combo?
 
If you only have one fan for your heatsink, is it better to have it pushing air in or pulling it out?

I ordered a heatsink that came with a fan + two other 120mm fans for my p183 case (middle and bottom) For those familiar with the case, the headsink would be sitting right in front of the rear exhaust fan and top exhaust fan.

So I'm back. I'm trying to save up some money by selling off some parts and stuff that I don't need anymore. I have my mind set on CPU, MB and RAM, as well as a new primary monitor - but cooling is the issue.

To be honest, my computer is pretty loud. Not sure why people are calling an Antec P182 case is very dead silent or what not - the noise, which I turned all the switches to LOW setting, but the 4x120mm Antec Tricool fans, 1xZalman 9700 CPU cooler, 1 EVGA 8800 GTS 512mb, plus the fan in my Corsair PSU all combined makes pretty loud noise.

I was thinking about going with TRUE 120 a couple weeks ago - but I am leaning more towards watercooling - even though I haven't done any watercooling before. My Antec P182 case does come with watercooling holes, so I am thinking of doing whole system (CPU, GPU, RAM, NB/SB cooling.

Does anyone have any recommendation for an Core i7 / X58 MB watercooling system, or perhaps help me out pointing any detailed beginners guide/direction?

I'd appreciate all your input. I'm hoping to keep the watercooling cost to about to 200 dollars, if it's even possible... or maybe this watercooling idea is just simply bad idea?

Its cheaper it comes with a better warranty, a better cooler and a free game, can't see the drawbacks, personally.

Its cheaper it comes with a better warranty, a better cooler and a free game, can't see the drawbacks, personally.

If you're not OCing then pay the little extra for the X4 630, its worth it.

How does that 5770 compare to the one I just ordered? It went up in price since I purchased it (I got it at $164.99+$10 MIR).
