Yeah the i5-750 is looking like the king right now.

brain_stew said:Its what I did, £90 off Ebay, sure there's plenty available in Canada (?) as well. I was well pleased with the upgrade, it makes a huge difference in an increasing amount of games. Running it at 3.36ghz (420x8). Be sure to get a G0 chip. Its basically the same as a stock i5-750.

That's so expensive.
Hellsing321 said:Windows 7 has been freezing up for me randomly. Sometimes it will do it 5 mins after start up. Some times it will take 2 or more hours, but eventually it will freeze up and a hard reset is necessary. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with what is running at the moment. I've left it idle for 1 hour and come back to find it frozen and sometimes it just freezes while I'm browsing the net. Has this happened for anyone else?
No reset or blue screen. Mouse freezes and I can't do anything. I'm at the end of my rope here trying to figure out what could be happening. Going into event viewer the errors say something about kernel power. No idea what that could be.TheExodu5 said:What kind of freeze? Does your screen just stay frozen (as in your mouse can't move)? Does it blue screen? Does it reset on it's own?

Its a Realtek, I believe. At least thats what the drivers that came with the disk are.TheExodu5 said:Do you have a motherboard with an Attansic or Atheros network adapter? Specifically the Atheros L1 or Attansic L1?

I guess I'll try that. The drivers that came with it aren't worth a shit anyway.TheExodu5 said:What's your motherboard?
Well either way...I had a similar issue with my Atheros L1. I needed to download drivers off the Attansic site rather than use the Windows 7 network drivers. That fixed it.
Hellsing321 said:I guess I'll try that. The drivers that came with it aren't worth a shit anyway.
ok will do.TheExodu5 said:Well you don't want the Attansic drivers. Just find the newest Windows 7 drivers for your Realtek card.
Also, I forget where I saw it but someone said their Windows 7 was using the 8111B driver for their 8111D network adapter, and they had to change it manually, so look into that as well.

I'm waiting for ATI's 5890 card. 5870 performance is not big enough over the 4890 to justify $400.. I mean I'd like to have DX11 but its not a necessity at the moment. By the time 5890 is release we should be seeing AMD's six core processors. Yep, I'm planning a major 2-part upgrade later this year.isamu said:so is it safe to say the 5870s are still the best graphic cards on the market right now?

For some reason Mass Effect 2 is not on the Japanese steam even though they tout that it has been released WORLDWIDE.
I can't seem to find any way around it and the only person I know who could gift it to me is broke(my brother).
It's really annoying that i just cant get games for my new rig, even though I could easily find an import 360 version downtown.
/sigh
Why not try eBay? The i7s sell really well there. Don't think many people who frequent this thread would buy it considering the huge "Bang for your buck" theme.kinggroin said:Friend of mine just bought an i7 975 EE for a pc build that ended pre-maturely (he got tired of waiting for the videocard - the 5890, and decided to part the machine out) :lol
Anyone interested? It's NIB, but brand new.

I'm currently facing this same dilemma, but i think i'm going with the I5. Based on the fact, the machine is going be a all-rounder, if you are planning on making your build primarily a gaming machine, you should be fine with a 955 BE. (as both CPUs are pretty close in performance) But if you do other stuff like encoding, video editing, photoshop etc. Might be worth the extra $80 towards the I5 route. Although, the 955 will be still good for that kind of stuff anyway.Rahk said:I plan on building a new PC in about 3-5 weeks, but am having a bit of difficulty deciding between a PII X4 955 BE and an i5 750.
I plan on overclocking and I know the i5 is better overall, but wouldn't I have a better upgrade path with the 955 BE and an AM3 motherboard? Plus, the i5 and mobo is $80 AUD more expensive.
I've been gaming on a laptop for the past couple years, so no matter what it's going to be a huge upgrade. Should I just go with the 955 BE?
Also, I was planning on getting a 5850 when I can afford it in mid-February, but would I be better off waiting until March, or is a price drop unlikely?
brain_stew said:The 965 is terrible value. If you're going with AMD, don't buy that chip its overpriced and not in the same performance bracket as the Intel chips.
You're probably best off with an i5-750, Exodus unless he's got a huge budget, the extra cash is better off spent on a better GPU.

the metal ring is actually a ferrite ring. you don't really need it.
if you mean the 8 pin socket on the motherboard then you don't have to use PCI Express power connectors on that!
if your PSU only has a 4 pin connector for the motherboard (if it's new it should really have both a 4 and a 8 pin power connector or an 8 pin connector that can be split in two) then connect that to the 8 pin connector on the MB using only half of it (the half that fits of course, it can only be inserted in one way)
oh god :lol
so let's start with the basic. every connector from the case should have two wires, one white (-) one colored (+). the speaker is the only one that doesn't follow this rule: black = - and red = +.
this should put you on the right way. every connector from the case should be marked. you have one for HDD Led, one for power led, one for reset and one for the power switch. they should match with the front header section of the motherboard's manual that should also tell you which pin on the mb is + and which is - for every connector (again HDD Led, power led, reset and power switch).
you're likely not going to toast anything if you mess with them (leds will probably just not light up) but take your time to get them right.
it's not strictly necessary to connect them to power on the pc to test, just shortcut for a second the two pins on the motherboard marked as power switch with a screw driver and the mb will happily turn on. you need a steady hand of course so it may not be worth the risk if you're at your first build :lol

Its still basically the same as XP but the window decoration looks better and it tries a bit harder to stop you from installing viruses/trojans etc. the font rendering still looks awful, it doesnt even seem to antialias a lot of text on websites.
just want to plug Linux Mint as a free alternative OS that is tolerable when you aren't gaming:
http://www.linuxmint.com/
it feels better out of the box than ubuntu to me, comes with a lot of good software for various tasks nicely arranged in your start menu, and is based on debian.
It says a lot that installing drivers for my hardware was smoother on linux mint than it was on windows. It automatically popped up a notification asking if i wanted it to download and install the ATI drivers the first time I booted it, and everything else just worked straight away, including a USB soundcard and two Mac formatted external hard drives.

CPU stock heatsink should have thermal pad on it. High quality thermal paste will lessen temps by 2-5c.scitek said:Hey guys, just got my parts, but uhh...thermal paste? I didn't get any, do I need some? The instructions for the CPU don't mention it.

i have no idea about that. i think the Cosmos dark black was a limited edition, not sure about the 690.·feist· said:If I'm not mistaken, the Dark Black was limited to a few hundred examples so feel free to brag. Your case and build look great. I generally don't like their mid/lower-end cases as far as aesthetics go, but this model looks nice and clean while still having good cooling and layout options.
my case is well built and i'm sure the new version is also. you can fit pretty much any component in it (only exception would be the new 5970 iirc, the 690II should have that sorted out) and they stay cool and quite (provided you get rid of the case's stock fans).Between the two of you, or any other owners, I'd love to hear your thoughts on build quality, sound and cooling characteristics. I've recently become increasingly preoccupied with temps so I'm always interested in the size, number and placement of fans that people are running.

Using a Func 1030 Archetype myself. Best mousepad I've ever used. Switching from the premium stuff down to your generic $1 mousepad from the dollar store is like night and day.
