"I need a new PC!" 2010 Edition

i5-750, i7-860, or Pii X4 965

The 965 is terrible value. If you're going with AMD, don't buy that chip its overpriced and not in the same performance bracket as the Intel chips.

You're probably best off with an i5-750, Exodus unless he's got a huge budget, the extra cash is better off spent on a better GPU.

Is there anywhere you can buy a cheap Q6600? I doubt it...but I wouldn't mind a little push up to quad from my terrible E6600 that runs hot and won't OC past 3.0GHz.

Its what I did, £90 off Ebay, sure there's plenty available in Canada (?) as well. I was well pleased with the upgrade, it makes a huge difference in an increasing amount of games. Running it at 3.36ghz (420x8). Be sure to get a G0 chip. Its basically the same as a stock i5-750.

One has 16 bids and is currently at $180. :(

That's so expensive.

You might want to check some other PC forums. I know quite a few go on sale over at overclock.net for a lot less than that, and you'll be able to get a guaranteed clocker that way. If you can get one (that's a good clocker) for like $140CAD or less its probably not a bad investment. What's your cooling like? Because even the G0s can run quite hot once OCed, I've got plenty of headroom in terms of volts but my budget cooler just isn't up to the job so I had to "settle" for 3.36ghz.

Windows 7 has been freezing up for me randomly. Sometimes it will do it 5 mins after start up. Some times it will take 2 or more hours, but eventually it will freeze up and a hard reset is necessary. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with what is running at the moment. I've left it idle for 1 hour and come back to find it frozen and sometimes it just freezes while I'm browsing the net. Has this happened for anyone else?

What kind of freeze? Does your screen just stay frozen (as in your mouse can't move)? Does it blue screen? Does it reset on it's own?

No reset or blue screen. Mouse freezes and I can't do anything. I'm at the end of my rope here trying to figure out what could be happening. Going into event viewer the errors say something about kernel power. No idea what that could be.

Do you have a motherboard with an Attansic or Atheros network adapter? Specifically the Atheros L1 or Attansic L1?

Its a Realtek, I believe. At least thats what the drivers that came with the disk are.

What's your motherboard?

Well either way...I had a similar issue with my Atheros L1. I needed to download drivers off the Attansic site rather than use the Windows 7 network drivers. That fixed it.

I guess I'll try that. The drivers that came with it aren't worth a shit anyway.

Well you don't want the Attansic drivers. Just find the newest Windows 7 drivers for your Realtek card.

Also, I forget where I saw it but someone said their Windows 7 was using the 8111B driver for their 8111D network adapter, and they had to change it manually, so look into that as well.

ok will do.

Still getting the 'no video input message'. To sum up, the heatsink is working and the gpu is emitting a minimal amount of air through the back vent. I have tried the gpu in a different pci slot, using a different monitor and only one stick of ram.

Anymore help would be greatly appreciated.

so is it safe to say the 5870s are still the best graphic cards on the market right now?
I'm waiting for ATI's 5890 card. 5870 performance is not big enough over the 4890 to justify $400.. I mean I'd like to have DX11 but its not a necessity at the moment. By the time 5890 is release we should be seeing AMD's six core processors. Yep, I'm planning a major 2-part upgrade later this year.

I have a Q6600 on my "other" pc with a Gigabyte EP45-UD3R (rock'n mobo). the chip is a G0 and it has at 3.4ghz...although it can go 3.6ghz stable but since i run it 24/7 as a file server..i lowered the OC a tad but it never gets hot and stays nice and cool

you can see some of the more detailed spec's of the OC on mine here http://www.dreamfxp.com/cpuz.htm

Its a great chip..its STILL today a damn good high performance processor if you can get one that OC's well. At 3.4ghz..the chip rivals that of other newer chips that cost 2x/3x as much

man i'm loving my new PC, I had no idea it was so easy to build one on the cheap. but damn windows 7 is still a backwards ass pile of shit. Its still basically the same as XP but the window decoration looks better and it tries a bit harder to stop you from installing viruses/trojans etc. the font rendering still looks awful, it doesnt even seem to antialias a lot of text on websites.

just want to plug Linux Mint as a free alternative OS that is tolerable when you aren't gaming:
http://www.linuxmint.com/
it feels better out of the box than ubuntu to me, comes with a lot of good software for various tasks nicely arranged in your start menu, and is based on debian.

It says a lot that installing drivers for my hardware was smoother on linux mint than it was on windows. It automatically popped up a notification asking if i wanted it to download and install the ATI drivers the first time I booted it, and everything else just worked straight away, including a USB soundcard and two Mac formatted external hard drives.

I plan on building a new PC in about 3-5 weeks, but am having a bit of difficulty deciding between a PII X4 955 BE and an i5 750.

I plan on overclocking and I know the i5 is better overall, but wouldn't I have a better upgrade path with the 955 BE and an AM3 motherboard? Plus, the i5 and mobo is $80 AUD more expensive.

I've been gaming on a laptop for the past couple years, so no matter what it's going to be a huge upgrade. Should I just go with the 955 BE?

Also, I was planning on getting a 5850 when I can afford it in mid-February, but would I be better off waiting until March, or is a price drop unlikely?

Man I am really sick of these DD region lock outs.

For some reason Mass Effect 2 is not on the Japanese steam even though they tout that it has been released WORLDWIDE.

I can't seem to find any way around it and the only person I know who could gift it to me is broke(my brother).

It's really annoying that i just cant get games for my new rig, even though I could easily find an import 360 version downtown.

/sigh

Just Paypal a GAFer the money and get them to gift it to you. I would, but its pricier in the UK.

Friend of mine just bought an i7 975 EE for a pc build that ended pre-maturely (he got tired of waiting for the videocard - the 5890, and decided to part the machine out) :lol

Anyone interested? It's NIB, but brand new.

Why not try eBay? The i7s sell really well there. Don't think many people who frequent this thread would buy it considering the huge "Bang for your buck" theme.

True. Just thought I'd give ya fellows a shot at it (you never know).

I'm currently facing this same dilemma, but i think i'm going with the I5. Based on the fact, the machine is going be a all-rounder, if you are planning on making your build primarily a gaming machine, you should be fine with a 955 BE. (as both CPUs are pretty close in performance) But if you do other stuff like encoding, video editing, photoshop etc. Might be worth the extra $80 towards the I5 route. Although, the 955 will be still good for that kind of stuff anyway.

Oh, and the AM3 does have a better upgrade path than the 1136 socket right now. Though, i have a feeling intel will announce 6-core cpus for the 1136 socket.

Yeah most likely, not so sure if it will be soon though, they might drop in price around march. As i think that's the time, the new nvidia gpus are hitting.

Could you elaborate on this? I'm currently finding it hard to decide between the 955, the 965 and the i5 750.
Here in Germany the prices are:

945 C3: 128 Euro
955 C3: 132 Euro
965 C3: 150 Euro
i5 750: 160 Euro

I've read that in most benchmarks the 965 performs comparable to or better than the i5 750. So why is the i5 750 the better deal?

I should mention that I'm building the PC primarily for gaming (Superior PC Versions and Dolphin/PCSX2 emulators).

you are NOT supposed to bend them.
the metal ring is actually a ferrite ring. you don't really need it.

if you mean the 8 pin socket on the motherboard then you don't have to use PCI Express power connectors on that!
if your PSU only has a 4 pin connector for the motherboard (if it's new it should really have both a 4 and a 8 pin power connector or an 8 pin connector that can be split in two) then connect that to the 8 pin connector on the MB using only half of it (the half that fits of course, it can only be inserted in one way)

oh god :lol

so let's start with the basic. every connector from the case should have two wires, one white (-) one colored (+). the speaker is the only one that doesn't follow this rule: black = - and red = +.
this should put you on the right way. every connector from the case should be marked. you have one for HDD Led, one for power led, one for reset and one for the power switch. they should match with the front header section of the motherboard's manual that should also tell you which pin on the mb is + and which is - for every connector (again HDD Led, power led, reset and power switch).

you're likely not going to toast anything if you mess with them (leds will probably just not light up) but take your time to get them right.
it's not strictly necessary to connect them to power on the pc to test, just shortcut for a second the two pins on the motherboard marked as power switch with a screw driver and the mb will happily turn on. you need a steady hand of course so it may not be worth the risk if you're at your first build :lol

sata0 hdd
sata1 dvd

:)

It isn´t even my first build, but the only one I did was when Radeon 8500s were brand new. Pcs didn´t have all those front USBs, LEDs, Audio ports etc. Coolers were tiny, cpus single core and pci-express didn´t even exist, I think. Those were the days were even I could build a pc.

Plus I was terribly tired, hungry and probably too long working on this already. I just did the whole mini cable thing in a couple of minutes. Still a bit mean to have coloured wires and coloured slots that don´t really match.

Now I´ll do the drives. Yay, almost done. And I´ll probably have someone around installing the W7 upgrade version on a clean hdd, I don´t need that. Luckily my cousin´s bf is a software guy.

Edit (for the lulz): they send me an IDE drive :lol I wanted the Samsung D163 (sata) and now I have the D162. I don´t know if they fucked up or I clicked on the wrong product, but for now I have not dvd drive :lol Thank god tomorrow is sunday. Wait, that sucks!

Oh well, if I have to go to a pc shop, what´d you recommend to tidy up the cables in the case? The PSU cables were tied together with a velcro strip, is this okay inside the case?

No, it really doesn't as I've had done fine with Windows 7. My custom rig, Windows 7 downloaded/installed all the needed drivers. I did another Window 7 one for a client, also a custom rig and it detected everything, even when the onboard LAN went bad, I pop in a third party LAN card it auto detected and installed the driver right away.

Maybe this could be my problem, does this http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173451 motherboard support dvi sockets?

Don't know what I was thinking here, getting confused between lga and vga. Anyway, phoned asus support and they suggested is was a motherboard problem as it was beeping when there was no ram but not when there was no video card, so they suggested it wasn't getting as far as the gpu. Hopefully the replacement will work :D

Hey guys, just got my parts, but uhh...thermal paste? I didn't get any, do I need some? The instructions for the CPU don't mention it.

The Samsung 1TBs are the best of the 1TB drives. They are the most reliable, highest performing, and have the least noise and power consumption.

CPU stock heatsink should have thermal pad on it. High quality thermal paste will lessen temps by 2-5c.

I do believe the i5 750 is a far better overclocker than the 965.

If I'm not mistaken, the Dark Black was limited to a few hundred examples so feel free to brag. Your case and build look great. I generally don't like their mid/lower-end cases as far as aesthetics go, but this model looks nice and clean while still having good cooling and layout options.
i have no idea about that. i think the Cosmos dark black was a limited edition, not sure about the 690.
but even if my hw starts to be a bit old (it's a C2Q 3 GHz btw) i'm still really happy as it turned out to look. definitely one of my best build as far as components choice and look.

Between the two of you, or any other owners, I'd love to hear your thoughts on build quality, sound and cooling characteristics. I've recently become increasingly preoccupied with temps so I'm always interested in the size, number and placement of fans that people are running.
my case is well built and i'm sure the new version is also. you can fit pretty much any component in it (only exception would be the new 5970 iirc, the 690II should have that sorted out) and they stay cool and quite (provided you get rid of the case's stock fans).

only problem is dust! it's really a nightmare since this case is full of vents and grids and with 2 or 3 fans sucking air in it can become real bad. but nothing a couple of well placed filters can't deal with.

:)

Sorry I bumped the old 09 thread. I guess I never unsubscribed and wasnt paying attention when I clicked it.

Whats a good but cheap way to capture video? Id like to maybe record some of my game playing moments (mainly when FFXIV releases) but have no clue where to start. Is FRAPs pretty good at doing this? Do I need a special card?

Incase you need it:

GA-P55-UD4P
Intel i5 750
ATI Radeon 5850
4GBs Gskill 1333

Ok i think it's time to upgrade my system, last time i did so was with my core 2 e660. (clocked at 3.1ghz)

It seems the core i5 would be a solid replacement for core 2 but i haven't a clue if these are decent clockers or not. or even if they're worth overclocking.

What are solid mobo's these days. DDR3...memory always bored me, should i just go for the quality, but lower end stuff as always?

Graphics cards....fuck, what a mess this market is in, my 8800gt died so i need a new card badly. (my 7800gtx currently just ain't cutting it)

I might just say fuck it and go for a 5850 but i don't like the idea of spending more than 200 quid for a graphics card.

Just wanted to pop in and say I got a Ratpadz GS and XT.

I personally prefer the GS for reasons unknown to me, but the XT looks 5x as tough.

$10 and $20 respectively with free shipping, very nice upgrade.
Feels like I'm moving along wet ice. :D

Hey guys I need to get a new monitor or an HDTV that acts like a monitor...

I don't know if I should get a 21" monitor and a 32" HDTV (going to get a PS3 soon) or should I just get a 32" HDTV that will be suitable for my computer and PS3 or just get a 21" monitor that will be suitable for my PC and PS3.

I have a superclocked 260gtx with a e5200 which I plan to overclock soon.

Thanks for any advice.

q8300.jpg

The heatsink is so god damned big. $40 was a nice price though, and supports all current sockets as well as my old socket 775.

Q8300 is going to be running on beta firmware.

Wish me luck.

So is it safe to say that you will no longer be relying on auto-aim? I keed, I keed.

Using a Func 1030 Archetype myself. Best mousepad I've ever used. Switching from the premium stuff down to your generic $1 mousepad from the dollar store is like night and day.

Quick (and potentially stupid) question...can I run Rivatuner while CCC is running or should I uninstall CCC altogether? I'm a little hesitant to uninstall CCC because I've got dual monitor setup and there were some settings I had to mess with under CCC to get it running properly..
