You forgot Windows.
Yeah, I was starting to edit about the Windows and Wireless card, but I decided in the end not to. I already have a copy of Windows 7, but I could always just get a license from my school's book store for ~$30 IIRC. I know nothing about wireless cards as I've never used one.

:( Why'd you even take the bait and try? Oh and you also forgot the $400 videocard

I build my own PCs but honestly I really, really like the Dell XPS, HP Slimline, and VAIO desktop cases. And I mean REALLY like them! Especially the VAIO with the hole im the middle/front. If I didn't absolutely need a "portable" PC that fit in a plane's overhead bin I would have bought that same XPS.

No Windows or wireless N, and that GPU is much worse/cheaper. Try again.

I hate black cases with silver frames and backing, I'll take my all black Obsidian any day of the week.

Last Video Card question 4 me

So I have made my Decision im going to get the 5670.

Should I get the 1 gig card or the 512 card. Also would i be able to play most game including FFXIV at 720p or 1440x900 ?

Thanks again

Yo're going to want something better than a 5670 for FF14. You're setting yourself up for disappointment. Get a 4850 at least, they can be had for as little as $80.

However, I think it's the office setting and wearing the tie so often that's made my tastes change over the years. I have to admit I used to have the riced out PC with the side window and crazy bright LEDs but have since outgrown that. Traveling and seeing low and high-end business desktops and laptops have made me appreciate that more "executive" (or wannabe executive) look of brushed metal, with maybe some tasteful chrome/silver highlights.

So, I'm thinking about building my own computer and my brother's maybe around christmas time this year, I was just wondering... for someone who doesn't know TOO much about computers, how hard is it to build a computer? What can I read to be more knowledgeable on the subject? I'm pretty good at fiddling around with things and probably would be able to make it work, but wouldn't mind knowing a bit of information before I really start to think about putting a computer together. I've always bought premades before.

Not a bad looking case at all, a little too flashy for my taste. It looks like you did a good job with cable management especially considering the size of the case.

Looking into getting this later this week. $997.28 after shipping and rebates. Any suggestions or comment would be very helpful, but my budget is stretched as far as it can go so any suggestions for a more expensive part need to be accompanied with ways to cut costs elsewhere.

Why do you say that, I got a 4800 (scoring higher than someone else with a GTX 480) on the 1080p benchmark with an ATi card, and from the sounds of it, merely putting it on my SSD would have pushed my score in to the mid 6000s.

I don't think so. I'm scoring ~5180 on my RAID0 and on my SSD. 980x at 4.7 Ghz, GTX 480 at 902/1804/2152.

hmmmmmm. maybe cut from hexa to quad and upgrade that 5770 to a GTX 460

I was basing it on this post. Curious, because who knows anything with this benchmark, I copied it to my SSD, and it also scored exactly the same as my external 5400rpm drive. Best score was ~4800 on a i7 920 @ 3.3GHz * 5870 @ 900/1300mhz.

Someone posted a 6000+ a couple pages back, very impressive (though still short of the 8000 score needed for a flawless performance).

The FF benchmark doesn't make any sense to me, I think my score was just under 2500. That's on a gtx295, i7 920, SSD, etc. The only thing is my 920 is still running stock speeds but the score was still really low, I'm going to run it again once the CPU has been OC'd, but I really don't expect a huge number increase.

Maybe not the place to post this but, after I installed my new MB and processor, it seems that my 360 wont recognize my PC anymore. It can connect to it on media center, but not normal PC media streaming (for pictures, music, video, etc.).

Doesnt seem to be the firewall or virus scanner blocking it, since my PC can still see my 360 under media sharing...

6000 in 1080p? Since the benchmark doesn't support multi-GPU at the moment, and I have the fastest CPU/single GPU out, I don't see how that's possible. (I'm not trying to brag, it is simply fact). If they did, I'd like to know their hardware/settings. :D

I'm pretty sure perforamance will drastically increase in actual gameplay using an SSD, where the game will actually stream things in from the drive, but I don't see it helping in that benchmark much.

I honestly dont know why my scores saw such a bump.

I was just thinking now...Prior to me installing the SSD, I had a WD 640GB 7200 RPM drive that I was running the benchmark on. This HDD was set in the BIOS as IDE mode since I never knew that AHCI was supposed to be better when I built it.

Would AHCI give that much of a performance increase to cause such a nice gain in the score?

One other thing to note is that there was some kind of glitch in the BIOS after installing the SSD that caused my CPU to set at X15 multiplier max in the BIOS. The workaround is to simply go back into the BIOS and load the optimized defaults...which I did and that fixed it. I wonder if there was something else in there that needed fixing and after I loaded the defaults, I saw the performance gain as well.

I wonder why SE even released such a shoddy benchmark

Yeah that's the one part I'm not sure about. So if i upgrade to a GTX 460, probably should go all the way to the 1 GB version huh. I suppose an extra $70 on a $1000+ system isn't all the much.

kagete said:
I second this, anything to get that newer, universally regarded 460 in there.

Try this monitor instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-059-_-Product

Maybe downgrade your HDD to the 500GB version from Samsung

What's the Tuniq thermal compound for? You don't look like you're buying an aftermarket cooler

Switched monitors, thanks. Also the thermal compound was not supposed to be there.

.

You could claw back an easy ~$50 by getting a motherboard with a 870 chipset instead. Its basically the exact same chipset just minus the integrated graphics and considering you won't be using the integrated graphics anyway, well there's no reason to pay a premium for them.

If your going to go this route definately pick up a 212+ Heatsink and some fans, for the extra 40 bucks it will cost you for aftermarket cooler/fans you can OC'd that X6 up to 4.0 ghz/core and it will run at full load at around 48 degrees.

Its worth it IMO.

Looking good! I'd try to stretch for a GTX460, and get 1600RAM with heat spreaders ($3 more).
Monitor was already mentioned. (I believe it's newer, has speakers and HDMI)
*And might as well toss in a 212+ and paste :)

*You can cut $30 by going to the GB 870 mobo that's in the sheet also. ( GA-870A-UD3 )

Hey guys, I need help with my video card. Right now, I am using an ATI HD4850. As of late, the card has suffered from some overheating issues. Even when the card is idling, the temperature reaches as high as 90 C. I have tried to increase the fan speed, but the Catalyst Control Center disables it as soon as I apply the change. What exactly is the issue here?

I have a similar problem. The issue is ATI's drivers.

so i need to upgrade this 8600GT i cant deal with it much longer while my 5770 is out for rma. Whats a good card in the 75-100$ Canadian range?

Okay getting a new PC, and I was wondering is this good enough for mainly Steam (TF2/mods) and Im thinking about getting back in WoW.

Processors
Intel® Pentium® dual-core E5500(2.80GHz,2MB L2,800MHz)

Memory
4GB4 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM3 at 1066MHz- 4 DIMMs

Hard Drive
750GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache

Video Card
Integrated Intel® GMA X4500 Graphics

So is this decent enough to run all the mods, patches, and misc stuff? Dont give me hell, im not techno savvy:lol

So I have to say that I'm impressed (sorta) with my V10 CPU cooler. I load up Core Temp and Prime95 to do a pre OC reading only to find my CPU temps went over 80 within a minute or so. I immediately shut it down and took a look in my case and neither CPU fan is spinning...so the CM V10 has been cooling the CPU without any fans for who knows how long, I haven't been monitoring my temps so I never noticed. They are reading around 51 idle, which is certainly warmer than they should be, but considering there's no active cooling that's not bad...off to the local computer store tomorrow to pick up a couple new fans I suppose.

I've only been playing iRacing recently so I don't think there was ever too much load on the system. I also did end up restarting because of all this and getting a fan error message, it's kind of odd there was no warning in Windows though. I'm sure there isn't any damage...

Outdated and dead socket for CPU, incompatible RAM (low speed too), older HDD, Graphics that won't run anything.

If possible if you can up your budget to $550 you will be a system you can upgrade and run everything very well.
If you need to cut down lower give me a price point and fill this out.

Also out of curiosity the AMD hexicores are only physical cores, no hyperthreading? So in theory the AMD 6 core compared to an i5 would have more physical cores but less total cores counting hyperthreading?
The x6 has 6 physical cores. The i5 does not have hyperthreading, only the i7's have them. HT is more used to utilize excess power on the available cores, it's not something beneficial at all in most cases.
Intel's 980x has 6 cores AND HT giving it 12 Threads

The Nv4_disp error I got last night playing Alien Swarm finally gave me the impetus to install EVGA Precision, and it's such a great tool. I can't believe I haven't been running something like this since I got my PC three years ago.

Can someone give me a an idea of how these temperatures sound for a non-overclocked 320MB 8800 GTS?

Idle - 61 C; Automatic fan running at 60%

Peak playing DowII - 82 C; Automatic fan running at 70%

Thanks. I guess Alien Swarm just doesn't get along with my system for some reason. I'll give the inside of the case a good cleaning soon anyway. I haven't done it in a while and it can't hurt.

With a new PC... I need a new mouse.

My current mouse does not work well for gaming.

It's a "ergonomic" mouse and has some "smooth scrolling" shit. Works well for browsing. But smooth scrolling basically means any mouse wheel shit in any game will be spazzy as hell. So much that it'll go off when just shooting in l4d.

Needs to be 5 button and less than $50. Cheaper is better, but I still want a decent mouse.

I was looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826105100 as the normal 3 button version was used at my highschool and they always felt sturdy and held up well but... I will NOT pay $6 shipping on an OEM mouse when every other part of my PC, even the case, had free shipping.:lol
